Hyundai Exter Compact SUV bookings open

Mod Note: Our Hyundai Exter Review has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

Hyundai is said to be working on a new compact SUV for the Indian market. The new model is expected to rival the likes of the Tata Punch, Citroen C3, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.

According to a media report, the new entry-level crossover will be positioned below the Venue in Hyundai’s model line-up. It is expected to go on sale in 2023 during the festive season.

The report also reveals that the model under development has been codenamed ‘Ai3 CUV’. It is also said that Hyundai had evaluated this segment in 2016-17, but the project only received the final go-ahead before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2021, the Hyundai Casper was introduced in global markets. It is based on the K1 platform and measures just over 3.5 meters in length. Reports suggest that the new model will be slightly bigger than that.

They might make good profits by leveraging unsafe platform (intentionally) for India.

The EuroNCAP rating was better, for similar product, as, the length and wheelbase are not the same.

This looks like the Punch and Ignis' offspring. Punch upfront and Ignis at the back (no puns intended).

Would have to give it to Tata as they have gotten others to take inspiration w.r.t design( Citroen C3, split headlight design with the Harrier, this Hyundai Punch competitor) and creating new segments with the Punch. They surely have earned the second spot in the sales chart.

So what started sub-consciously with the Ignis in 2016 is now going to be a full fledged segment! Interesting times ahead.
Plus yes, I never expected the Casper to be introduced here since it is way too small! The India-spec model might just be a boxier version of the i10 Nios to save costs.

Honestly, with their past record and the present Creta scenario, I don't expect any Hyundai to be safe! They are the new tincan makers.

The Punch and Ignis for starters aren't great designs tbh! While the Ignis looks smart upfront, it feels awkward from certain angles and the Punch IMO, is basically a boxy C3 that doesn't look half as good!

Sorry to say but your comment is full of false information and here are the facts-

1. The Punch wasn't the design inspiration for Citroen C3. The C3 has been on sale globally since 2016 and was instead the design inspiration for the Venue. Heck IMO, the Punch is just a C3 with straighter lines and an awful engine.

2. The split headlamp setup was in use globally since years before Tata introduced it here. Even in India, the first car with a split headlamp setup was the Mahindra NuvoSport in 2016.

3. While the Punch did popularize the SUV-masquerade hatchback segment, this segment is pretty old in India with the likes of the Cross Polo, Avventura etc being half-hearted attempts at it and the Ignis being the first proper attempt at the segment (Although they did not market it as one until 2020!)

4. No, Tata is not the 2nd largest carmaker in India. They were only on the position for two non-consecutive months and they were sent back to the third position both times by Hyundai.

- Can agree that C3 pre-dates the Punch but C3 itself has a pretty awful engine too. Design wise, the C3 launched in India is nowhere as refined in terms of design as the global one, which looks way better and more in line with Citroen's design language.

- Well you gotto be kidding me if you bring in Nuvosport in anything to do with design. The Nuvosport cannot inspire a bicycle IMHO. What Harrier started can be called split 2.0 which was quickly followed by Hector, Creta Venue along with a plethora of other cars in all segment. And didn't see this in any other car before, please state an example if I'm wrong.

Ignis - yes, Cross Polo and Fiat Avventura never targetted the same segment as the Punch. Ignis is one of my personal favorites too but it is polarizing which the Punch isn't.

- They still held the position for 2 weeks. Who else came close? I meant to say they have earned their rise with the amazing product line up over the last couple of years. Showed significant improvement in all aspects

Tata Punch-rivalling Hyundai Ai3 compact SUV spied

The first images of what is believed to be Hyundai’s upcoming compact SUV have surfaced online. The crossover was spotted at a parking lot in South Korea.

The new model, codenamed: Ai3 CUV, is expected to be positioned below the Venue and could go on sale in 2023 during the festive season.

Hyundai Ai3 appears to be inspired by the Casper compact SUV that was introduced in the South Korean market earlier. The car has a boxy exterior with squared-off wheel arches and an upright front fascia with a split headlamp design. The test vehicle has a sunroof, roof rails and a shark fin antenna.

Rumours suggest that the new Hyundai crossover could be based on a localized version of the K1 platform and could be slightly larger than the Casper. It will compete with the Tata Punch, Citroen C3 and the like.

re: Hyundai Exter Compact SUV bookings open

Hyundai has felt the heat from the Punch making 10-12k units every month, since it was an important product from Tata that brought the numbers close to Hyundai. They need to bring a competitor here in India.

Competition would be great for us customers. Hyundai would ensure Tata brings in more power trains and some more improvements. Unless there's a competition, Tata would do anything substantial to the Punch.

re: Hyundai Exter Compact SUV bookings open

The compact SUV term is very confusing nowadays. If <4M "SUV" is "compact SUV" then Nexon fits that category. Punch is smaller than Nexon, so it needs a different term.

Similarly, Venue is <4M SUV. So that new car would need a different term to be defined.

I believe "crossover" can be the right term here. Essentially a "hatchback on steroids".

Looks more like a Wagon R competitor. The wheels look puny.

Anyway TATA Punch will get a real competition. Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger have not been able to take on the PUNCH.

I hear the launch is in late Jul'23 or Aug'23 just before festivities kick in and it is going to offer same powertrain combinations as Nios. MT/ AMT & CNG.
