3) Have there been cases of renewal rejection if Form1-A is not signed by an RTO doctor? We plan to get it signed by a government employed MBBS doctor whom my father visits for consultation/medicine topup.
1) Haven't seen a link/list, but there will be dozens of such guys outside any RTO.

This is what the stamp on the form for my Dad looked like:

2) Seems like that's it. Or at least there's nothing else that will require additional effort / not be available (pre-filled) on the site itself.

However, see my post above. The key thing here is that your father's Aadhaar details match the License details EXACTLY. If not, you won't be able to do it 100% online.

3) No idea.

After roughly 30 days, i have received my physical copy by speed post. Thanks for all information.

I had very limited time and found online process confusing and without flow to get this done on ground. So took agent services. Agent charged me 3.5 times of actual official cost (Opted voluntarily ). Plus i had to visit RTO twice physically.

I am sure agent didnt keep all that extra money he charged me for himself !

So if i read statements , RTO offices are agent free. I know ground reality. For Rs 100, Dr. in RTO premise will stamp medical fitness form without even looking at your face. So much for being medically fit for road safety.

When i visited RTO office, i could see so many agents with stacks of forms in their hand. They even had privilege to access officers desk (physical forms or government registers) and officers designated space/table where you as applicant are not allowed. Seems online process is smartly designed to ensure "survival" of agents and subsequent "kick backs" just like before.

I so wish if RTO offices can implement way Indian passport offices are working. No application means no entry inside passport office. Only applicants with prior appointments are allowed to enter passport office premises. Passport agents were phased out over night.

It seems RTO doesn't want to block agents on purpose. I am sure in charge of road department in center is a clean guy but he is busy working hard to abolish toll across India for last few years .

Regarding how my road test was done (a crucial step to establish applicant can really drive/ride and is not a hazard for others on road) and overall behavior of officers on duty - No Comments.

How long after you got the 'despatched by speed post' message did you receive your license? I received this message on September 6th, but still not able to track it on the India Post website, it just says 'consignment details not found'.

Any suggestions?

I got mine in 3 days after the despatched message. In the meantime just log into digilocker & enter your application number, you'll have your license.

1. Whole process took roughly 30 days from date of online application/engaging agent.

2. It took speed post 2 weeks after i received tracking number in SMS to deliver "within" same city.

3. I was never able to track it on speed post website. It just says 'consignment details not found'.

I would suggest, use digilicker to check if it is reflecting revised license validity. If yes, sit back and relax. Speed post will work with "real" speed and your physical copy will reach "someday".

Hope this helps.

Correct me, in digilocker , you need to enter your driving license number or application number?

I used license number and till renewal happened, it was showing old license details. Post renewal , i could see new details even before delivery of physical copy.

Sorry, you have to enter the new 15 digit license no MHxx. Just delete the earlier one first & it fetches the new license.

Thanks for the suggestions. Was able to login to Digilocker immediately and retrieve the new license.

I also just received the new DL via speedpost exactly 15 days after the 'dispatched' message. Still not able to track it online though! The postman said the serial number for tracking RTO speed post deliveries has changed and begins with a 'T' now. So it could be that the India Post website has not been updated yet for this change.

Apparently the licenses are now only being printed in 3 locations in Maharashtra so it does take a bit of time for delivery.

Just FYI for everyone:

MH RTO's have now switched to the National standard for DL cards. This does not have a chip embedded, but rather a QR code on the back that links to the Sarathi website with all details of the DL shown on a webpage. Not sure how secure this implementation is but it is what it is.

The change to the new format must have happened earlier this year, as when I had got my DL issued mid last year it was still on the old MH format.

Sample pictures of old and new formats below for reference:

We got a T.... tracking number, and the tracking worked fine on https://www.indiapost.gov.in

The address having to match seems to be a bit strange, since "ADDRESS CHANGE IN DL" is also listed as another category of service under the "FACELESS" service via Aadhar based verification.

Why don't they provide a simple checkbox to tick and confirm that the address on the renewed DL will be updated basis the Aadhar based address? This would help many people given address changes in a city like Mumbai.

They are anyway seeking a checkbox tick for confirmation that the person will destroy the old DL in lieu of non-surrender and not misuse it (which is more critical).

Re: DIY: Renewal of Maharashtra (MH) Driving Licence online

I also applied for driving license renewal this month since it was expiring in October

Made the application through my old driving school agent. Applied on the 8th and received confirmation of application on the spot. I also applied for a change of address to get the address format the same as all my other documentation and also to correct a spelling mistake. Wanted to change my signature as well but decided not to since it would require a visit to the Borivali RTO and redoing biometrics and anyways DLs are not really considered "serious" address proof where it matters nowadays anyway.

Got a message few days later that address change request has been processed. Another message on the 18th that the license has been successfully renewed. Dispatched on the 20th and received it today. All in all 20 days is not bad and it was a painless procedure sice I went through an agent.

Total cost was Rs 1000 for license renewal + Rs 500 for Address change.

License looks like the new type card pictured above. Feels a little thinner and flimsier compared to the old one which was poor quality anyways. Any way to protect it ? Its always in my wallet which is in the back pocket.

I also learned that licenses are renewed for only 10 years instead of 20 you get when new.

My dear friend,

It is not the licenses which are no longer 'new'. It is us.

When you are 18+, your license is valid for 20 years.

Once you turn 40, you have to renew your license every 10 years.

When you're 55+, validity period becomes 5 years.

Private Driving license is valid for 20 years from the date of issue or till the holder attains 40 years of age, which comes earlier.
After the age of 40 the Driving licence will be issued for 10 years & then 5 years subsequently.

Validity for Non Transport Vehicles
(a) If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is less than 30 years, then the Non Transport Validity would be till the attainment of 40 years
(b) If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is >= 30 and <50, then the Non Transport Validity would be for a period of 10 years
(c) If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is >=50 and <55, then the Non Transport validity would be effective until the date on which such person attains the age of 60 years
(d) If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is >=55, then the Non Transport validity would be effective for a period of 5 years

Haha it's true !! Although I did expect shorter intervals for people who are 50-60+, I just assumed that the first renewal if you got your licence around the time you turned 18, would also be for 20 years because this phase would be when you have become mature, gained enough driving experience and also would be healthy ideally.

  • DL was to expire on 7th Jan 2023.
  • Applied online for renewal in 31st Dec 22. You can either do Aadhaar based verification or Sarathi verification. I opted for Aadhaar based verification. Later I realised that my DL had only first and last name, while Aadhaar had first, second and last names. So was not sure if it'll be rejected during verification stage at RTO.
  • I'm over 40 and would require medical certificate on form 1A. After applying online, I could see the option to download form 1A and was surprised to see that it came pre-filled with all my details including my photo from the DL.
  • Was in a dilemma whether to go with a government approved medical practitioner for the certificate. There is also a list available online on the certified doctors for each RTO. While shopping in my vicinity saw a clinic with a board stating medical certificate for LIC provided here. So took a chance and got the certificate signed and stamped there.
  • Uploaded the documents ( Form 1A and expiring DL) and paid the fees (₹ 472) online on 10th Jan 23.
  • Next step was scrutiny of documents at RTO and it didn't show any progress till 24th Jan. I was mentally prepared to visit the RTO over the coming weekend.
  • 25th Jan morning I recieved sms that scrutiny is complete. So next step is approval of DL.
  • Same day afternoon another sms that the DL is approved.

Now the 2 steps remaining is printing of DL in form 7 and dispatch through post.
But I need not really wait as the licence status is now updated in DigiLocker!!
What about the old license, did you surrender it to RTO?

No, you can keep your old license, why would RTO require an expired license?
