Re: Which online classifieds / website did you successfully sell your car on?

We sold our Corolla AT (2008) and Accord AT (2011) via OLX and the experience was decent around 2017. Nowadays, there are numerous scams on OLX like fake ads, fake messages from people once you post the ad. I remember posting an ad for selling my iPod and got atleast 4-5 scam calls in a day, a friend is looking forward to sell a Creta 1.6 AT 2016 on OLX and have been getting absurd offers.

Please be very careful in providing your details on OLX and be sure of the callers as they would scam you even before you know it.

I sold my VW Polo 2013 via CarDekho and the experience was very average. The car was transferred to another owners name after 8 months and after various follow ups with them. They are not at all professional and hardly have any portal to address your issues.

Re: Which online classifieds / website did you successfully sell your car on?

I sold my old Car via Quickr / OLX (almost 7 years do not remember exact platform)

Here is my take on selling cars

If you are in a hurry and not concerned about the price then Cars24 / Spinny are the ones to go to, its hassle free and quick. But they offer you 10-15% less than fair market value. Even though they claim to be clean but eventually your car will go to a local shady dealer, they B2C is not that efficient. So you still have to follow up on the RC transfer (which might take long depending on how quickly dealer is able to sell)

I know someone who gets inventory from Cars24 Delhi (big ticket 9-10 year old diesel cars Fortuner, X1, A4 etc. with NOC) and retails them in Bangalore, typically purchase to RC transfer time is 3-4 months.

Now for a fair value, you will have to find a buyer (not a middle men), best is if you can find some one in your network, else you will have to go to classifieds (OLX / QUIKR, Carwale, Cartrade etc.)

These classified have their own set of challenges
- 60% of calls you will receive will be from Dealers or lowballers (it will be a waste of time, they will try to convince you that how markets have changed, why your model in particular will not fetch good in market etc.)

- Even for the genuine bueyrs its again a hassle, figuring out availability for test drives, a lot of time buyers do not turn up

- Finally drop offs at closure, any buyer will be evaluating other cars, will be in touch with dealers and will be open to new car (either in a segment below to match his budget or with finance option)

Other tips
- Premium listing on classifieds do not guarantee sales but offers additional visibility, unless you have not priced fairly, premium listings are waste

- Try to close transaction (at-least advance) in the first test drive only, second opinion kicks in specially when someone is buying a used cars

- Keep you service history ready in the first meeting (buyers will pay premium for peace of mind and this also helps in closing transaction quickly)

Re: Which online classifieds / website did you successfully sell your car on?

I sold my 9 year old Diesel Innova in Delhi in 2022. Here is my experience -

1. Which website did you successfully sell your car / bike on? - OLX Autos

2. How was the experience? - Seamless, instant transfer of money, documents cleared within 2 months of the sale.

3. Do tell us stories about the serious guys & timewasters. - Cars24 was lowballing the deal by 50k. Spinny, Mahindra First Choice, Orange Book Value and Droom did not offer on the car, due to it's age and location in Delhi

4. How fast / slow did the sale happen? Did it take a lot of time to sell your car? - Cars24 and OLX Autos both sent evaluators within 24 hours of booking an appraisal. OLX Autos were very transparent about the process, the bidding that takes place and after offering a quote, gave me 3 days to decide.
Sale was finalized within 2 days of offer and money was transferred to my account in full, immediately post signing of documents.

5. Did you pay for the listing, or free? - I paid a commission of 2-3K for selling the car, which was inclusive of their fees, documentation etc. Was offered a flat price, money to be credited to my account. It was more than the market offer, hence went with it.

6. Did you get the expected price or did you have to go way below? - I bought the Innova in 2012 for 14 lakh and ended up selling for 3.9 lakh 9.5 years later. I would say price expectation was met.

7. Any tips or advice? - Hide your car number and any other personal details/background while clicking photos of the car.
Most important - Take your time in deciding who to sell to, in a market where demand is stripping supply, you hold the chips, act like it.

1. Had sold my i10 last year when I was on the look out for a new car

Had reached out to Cars24 (booked appointment on mobile app). Price offered by them was close to what I was expecting. However I finally sold my car to the KIA dealership for a similar price when I booked the Seltos.

2. Experience with Cars24 was not great. While the surveyor arrived on time and completed the checks, the follow ups and frequent changes in the relationships agent was very frustrating. Each time they discussed a few things such as past challans or if I am in conversation with anyone else and kept on promising a higher amount over the phone with the caveat that they need to consult higher ups. Finally just avoided them and sold to the KIA dealership.

3. Never posted on OLX or any other platform. Had experienced the headache of low ballers and timewasters when I was helping my in-laws sell their Vento TDI. Decided its better to avoid such platforms.

This is a great thread. Any chance a similar thread exists for buying a used car? If so, I cant seem to find it.

Re: Which online classifieds / website did you successfully sell your car on?

Thanks to this thread, I got valuable inputs on selling my car. Obligated to share my recent experience of selling my Scorpio SLE 2010 model.

Quote:
1. Which website did you successfully sell your car / bike on?
OLX Autos. I had registered for sale at Cars24, CarWale, CarDekho, Mahindra 1st choice & Team-BHP classifieds.

Quote:
2. How was the experience?
The overall experience relatively was a breeze (thanks to the info here). My car Ads started to appear on Fri morning and I had the sale completed by Sun evening.

OLX Autos (Not to be confused with the general OLX selling portal):

Pretty professional in their approach. Timely callback, appointment schedules, 2x times thorough inspection w/TD & 150+ checklist items, assigning a direct point of contact to clarify queries, allowing room for negotiation, full payment from OLX within an hour of signing the papers. I got a reasonable (& best) price after couple of rounds of negotiation. They take 2K as their charges. In my case, apparently a buyer is already waiting and has paid the advance. They are guaranteeing to complete the transfer within 30 days.

The guy who came for the inspection was an auto enthusiast. In his own words, mine was one of the better maintained Scorpios & apparently stated so in his report. Perhaps, this is the reason, OLX didn't want to let go of the vehicle.

My neighbour's i10 selling experience with OLX also helped.

Cars24:

This was my 1st choice as many members had rated so. They responded immediately, but inspection wasn't thorough. No TD, but external & internal look around. They even sent me the inspection report.
The price quoted was low and they seemed very convinced I wouldn't get more anywhere else. No follow up from them either.

CarWale / CarDekho:

These are market places unlike the above. The ad shows up in the portal and individual buyers can reach out. But, these portals help the seller to get indicative prices (through their algorithms) for their vehicle.

Mahindra 1st choice:

The website doesn't work reliably. Neither could get an indicative price, nor could book an appointment. Got an appointment through their tollfree number. They promptly sent someone for inspection. Before they could offer a quote, I had closed the deal. With Mahindra, there is no tracking info - No SMS, no WhatsApp.

Team-BHP Classifieds:

A fellow Team-BHPian (not an individual buyer, though) was very serious in the purchase. I eventually decided to go with OLX. Price, availability of an immediate buyer and they already had someone at my door to handle the paper work.

Quote:
3. Do tell us stories about the serious guys & timewasters.
Since I followed the recommendations in this thread to avoid timewasters and closed the deal fast, I didn't have to encounter this issue.

Quote:
4. How fast / slow did the sale happen? Did it take a lot of time to sell your car?
3 days. Perhaps, my temperament didn't allow for a longer wait.

Quote:
5. Did you pay for the listing, or free?
None of the listed sites, charged for the listing. As mentioned, OLX deducted 2K from the final transaction amount for their service.

Quote:
6. Did you get the expected price or did you have to go way below? For my Civic, I had to slash the price drastically as the model had poor demand in the used market (unlike the Corolla Altis).
I would think so. Even at the time of signing the papers, I got a call asking, if I would be willing to sell to a portal if they provided a better quote. I politely declined.

There are different ways to look at this. One could drag this process for weeks / months over few thousands. It would be an individual's call to assess if their time is worth that money. Every inspection takes about 30-40 mins, multiple negotiations, etc. Once the vehicle is put up for sale, you also want to be cautious with that vehicle and not reduce its value due to damages. I also heard, if you stay longer in this process and your vehicle goes into multiple auctions, the value can potentially reduce.

Quote:
7. Any tips or advice?
Based on my own experience:
1) Good photographs of your vehicle helps to create a very good initial impression. If there are constraints on the number of photos to upload, use collages.
2) A well-maintained car, most often should get a good inspection report. Even if you get that pulse from one inspector, it gives you the confidence to negotiate harder.
3) I believe, it isn't a general practice to share the inspection reports with the seller. An inspector advised me against requesting it. He seemed to indicate, the report will not be the gospel truth. For e.g., if the vehicle is in top condition, in order to keep the price under control, they may highlight some unseen issues (scratches, dents, niggles, etc). Despite me clarifying, there was no part replacement in my car, I gathered later, the report talked about bumper replacement.

Re: Which online classifieds / website did you successfully sell your car on?

I had checked the online quote for my Punto evo 2014 on cars24 website around 2 weeks back and it mentioned a decent amount. But today it’s reduced by 1 lakh! Does these companies have variable pricing like flight tickets?

I mentioned in my post too. If a vehicle goes into multiple auctions (with multiple portals, channel partners), its value apparently reduces. It is the opposite of flight tickets (price decrease vs increase for tkts). The longer it stays in the auction, the lesser the demand.

It is a trap for sure. Unless one is ready to close the deal fast, fiddling with these websites for price checks might be more harmful than good.

Re: Which online classifieds / website did you successfully sell your car on?

I have just sold my 7 year old Honda City VX-AT. We just got back from the RTO agents office, where the buyer came along with his documents & we have left it to the agent to go ahead with the transfer formalities. Point to note – The RTO Agent is very well known to me and has handled documentation twice for me in the past. (Transfer from MH to KL & hypothecation cancellation)

1. Which website did you successfully sell your car / bike on? - OLX

2. How was the experience?

I first listed on Spinny, Cars24, OLX Cars. The valuations they offer online are no where close to what they finally offer. Spinny didn’t come back with an offer. OLX Cars & Cars24 came back with offers. Cars24 was higher than OLX Cars. But Cars24 sent a newbie for the inspection who barely knew how to drive. I finally ended up driving for the TD.

I had also listed on Team BHP Classifieds but received no response.

The maximum responses I received was by listing directly on OLX. I got a better price than was offered by Cars24

3. Do tell us stories about the serious guys & timewasters.

I got too many calls from Spinny, OLX Cars & Cars24 via the OLX ad which was irritating and a total waste of time. Many of the respondents were also offering ridiculously low prices and trying to convince me why I should sell at such a low price. But I did ultimately get a few serious interests one of which went thru.

4. How fast / slow did the sale happen? Did it take a lot of time to sell your car?

Within 2 weeks after the first attempt. Less than 3 to 4 days after listing on OLX.

5. Did you pay for the listing, or free?

Free

6. Did you get the expected price or did you have to go way below?

Within my expected range. I did keep a buffer for negotiation.

7. Any tips or advice?

Use Cars24 / OLX Cars / Spinny to get an estimated value & then list directly on OLX.

Re: Which online classifieds / website did you successfully sell your car on?

1. Which website did you successfully sell your car/bike on?

I used OLX and Team BHP classifieds

Offers received:

TeamBHP - 1
OLX - 20+

2. How was the experience?

I was able to quote the precise price on Team BHP, but posting that on OLX resulted in lowballs. I posted a much higher price which led to a good adjustment in the offers that I started receiving after that. Once I got two-three serious offers, the ball was rolling.

3. Do tell us stories about the serious guys & timewasters.

There was a lad who talked a lot about how he's from the government and they don't pay full price etc etc the usual cock and bull. At the end, it always came down to haggling for the last 2-3k, which was a very sour experience when looking at what was on offer.

Lots of members lowballed, were told sorry, and then mentioned they'd rather buy new (and then proceeded to continue lowballing).

Of the 20+ offers in 3 days, I only got about 3 serious offers, of which one closed on their first visit on the spot.

4. How fast / slow did the sale happen? Did it take a lot of time to sell your car?

4 days from initial message to calls to visit to payment to transfer without agent at RTO (KA)

5. Did you pay for the listing, or free?

Free listings at both places.

6. Did you get the expected price or did you have to go way below?

I had a pretty mainstream scooter that was very popular and well known to sell and be essentially bulletproof with its reliability.

Plus the mileage was super low, so the deal prices were good even as per OBV (my preferred benchmarking tool for ballpark estimates) and personal estimations. The sanity checks were fine and I landed pretty close to what I expected.

7. Any tips or advice?

Even if it feels like cheating or daylight robbery, quote high because we Indians love being vindicated by a perceived good deal. I initially listed at the price I expected, but got lowballed into oblivion and no serious offers.

It's only when I literally pushed the price to an insane but reasonable price (close to on road almost) and then bargained down to the price expected in increments did I allow myself to arrive at a good deal. Even then, they WILL haggle with you at the time of sale so make sure you have a 5k-15k headroom in YOUR favor even for the last moment, and do NOT cave into their reasoning and emotional blackmail. Be prepared to walk away even when the deal is almost closed, create that FOMO.

I got lowballed by almost everyone. But I knew what I had. And I knew people wanted it. That's important.

Also, take your time and tell them you'll come back to them and their offer even if you're thinking hard about folding, after checking with friends and family, that is needed to tell them you have all the time in the world. Time is everything.

IF you have the time, do the RTO work yourself if possible, and bake that into the price on offer. Make sure you take the necessary NOC+Form 29+ Form 30 etc and get that sorted the day you make the sale. It's ultra important. I keep a broker as a resource for checking my second guesses, and tossed a few hundred to keep them in good books if I needed a backup.

But for bigger deal sizes, you might not have that luxury, and it's the sad reality. Grab a trusted broker from the team bhp threads littered about on the topic, or make a new one if none exist!

We had the rto staff really try and grab cash by saying all sorts of willy nilly reasons (felt it was because we weren't locals, clearly) and we kinda bluffed our way through to getting a receipt (the local we sold to was a blast in terms of street smartness! Submitted the same receipt again and it got approved in person with the best poker face I've ever seen, bravo Ajju)

Re: Which online classifieds / website did you successfully sell your car on?

I had gotten a lot of tips/tricks on team BHP while selling my car, including this thread. So time to revive this with my experience and two cents selling my car to a used car startup online.

1. Which website did you successfully sell your car / bike on?

Successfully sold on Cars24.

Listed on :
Carwale/Cartrade
OLX
TeamBHP Classifieds
Facebook marketplace
Spinny
OLX

2. How was the experience?

It started with getting my car evaluated by Mahindra first choice to get a rough estimate on what my car could be sold at.

Tip 1: Try not to share your RC copy/Insurance copy. The moment you do that, this likely gets circulated across different channels and my belief is that (opinion, not fact) it almost becomes cartel like when it comes to pricing your car.

Once I got the initial estimate, I checked out what similar cars were priced at in these portals, checked out Carwale's online estimate.

I knew that Spinny/Cars24 were pretty much a 2 day affair, so listed there in the end.

First things first, Carwale was the worst. I think the site has become just something for dealers to list their wares. Even though I uploaded 15 photos of the car, the photos never showed up. Even on the day of listing, the car (without any pics) was listed somewhere on the third or forth fold, almost impossible to discover. Pretty much a useless listing.

Carwale also automatically lists the car on Cartrade. Looks like dealers have some sort of notifications whenever a car gets listed. I immediately got pinged by 5/6 dealers enquiring about the car.

Olx was just weird. The good part of OLX is, they don't share your phone number. All conversations happen through the chat, so you can put in your common sense to figure out which one is likely a scamster and who is likely a buyer. I got 2 genuine leads and 7/8 dealer leads and 5 scamsters on OLX.

Facebook marketplace is a good place to post - In fact I sold my Hyundai Accent on Facebook's second to none group back in 2014. I got 2 serious leads from there.

3. Do tell us stories about the serious guys & timewasters.

Once you list on OLX, the lowballers are all out in full force. If you quote 7.5, you'll get an offer for 5.5. It's almost incredible how this works out, so I quoted higher than what I wanted for the car, i.e 8, and the lowballers almost algorithmically upped their offer to 6L. From 15 random offers, 2 of them were genuine individuals.

Tip 2: Do not provide your number to anyone, especially on OLX. Try to get as much information as you can on the OLX chat.

4. How fast / slow did the sale happen? Did it take a lot of time to sell your car?

The final sale happened within 2 days of checking in with Spinny and Cars24. The overall process however took a week.

5. Did you pay for the listing, or free?

Free.

6. Did you get the expected price or did you have to go way below? For my Civic, I had to slash the price drastically as the model had poor demand in the used market (unlike the Corolla Altis).

The individual leads for the car had a couple of bargain hunters who were just looking for folks moving out of the country or buying a new car and hence parking issues. The other 2 were decent and I could have gotten about 5% more than what Cars24 was offering me. But there were 2 problems : Speed, they were taking their time evaluating other cars, negotiating (their right to do so). 2. I still felt a bit iffy with large cash dealings with an individual I just did not know and the 4-5% extra was not significant enough for that risk. So ended up with Cars24 even though this presents a different risk in the form of RC transfer. I just don't know yet and really hoping it comes through.

I got a good deal (almost 70% of the invoice price for a 6 year old car)

7. Any tips or advice?

Overall, Cars24 and Spinny came up with an abnormally silly quote which was almost 20% lower than their initial estimate. It was so low I was completely disgusted with it in fact.

The key for me was that I had leads from other sources. and I was in no rush to sell the car as well. It was extremely well cared for, smooth as hell and a zero hassle service experience with Hyundai.

The moment I said I am going to keep my car, I got an offer that was a whopping 20% higher from Cars24. After that though, Cars24 process was clean, simple, and easy to deal with. Got the full cash on the same day before the car was picked up.

Tip 3: Try to sell it before the constraints close in (for eg. at least 15/20 days before your new car delivery etc) You need to have the room to walk away from terrible deals. Yet, it is still a tight rope balance, since you don't want to keep your listing on these sites for long.

I tried local dealers but it was Maruti's True value who matched my expectations with just 50% depreciation and even the transfer process was very smooth.

Sold my Ritz to the same showroom from where I had bought it a decade ago

Re: Which online classifieds / website did you successfully sell your car on?

I had sold four of my vehicles before acquiring current Creta 2023.

1. Maruti Suzuki Wagonr 2008, Petrol Vxi

Due To my official commitment,I had to shift to Hong Kong and sell it after 3 years of use. The short notice from employer made me to sell it fast. Drove my vehicle to Maruti Suzuki True Value. ODO was 100000 plus kms and I got 50% of the value. They checked the vehicle and all paperwork together with fund transfer completed on same day. I also followed up and ensured that the name on RC got changed in 2 months time

2. Maruti Suzuki Swift 2017, Petrol ZXI

I exchanged my Swift which I used to 2 years(again 100000 plus kms on ODO), for Creta in 2020. Hyundai made it easy and the vehicle was handed over to them a couple of days before delivery. Got again resale vale of 50%-55% of actual cost. Again had to follow up for 4 months to get name changed.

3. Hyundai Creta 2020,Petrol SX

Used for a couple of years with ODO at 140000kms while selling. Checked with Cars 24 and Spinny and got inspected. They offered sub par value and I instantly rejected. I also posted on Team Bhp classifieds and a fellow Bhpian contacted. We communicated over phone and deal was closed at a fair price.
On sale day, sat together at a place, handed over documents and keys. Happy sent off with happy faces. He updated owner details in RC book in a month and kept updating me on the process. Felt very happy to have a deal with a fellow Bhpian.

4. Mahindra Thar 2023, Petrol HT MT

Again due to my official commitments had to transfer and I was forced to sell my beloved Thar with ODO 72000 plus in a year. To check my stats, I contacted Cars 24, and got a poor response and price later. Instantly rejected but they keep calling me on daily basis till I told them that I soldy vehicle. Meanwhile gor a handsome deal from Mahindra Choice where I enquired and closed with them. Fair price and they also helped in transfer of ownership, which completed in 2 months time.
