Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

Fortuner: Yes. Infact sold our 2020 model and booked the new one.

Duster 85: It has proven itself to be a reliable workhorse. It costs 1500-2500 to service. As its 2014 model. Interior is the old one. But as its proven to be reliable, will buy again

Innova: Sold a 2014 model and bought 2015 with genuine odometer reading. So, again, sold and bought again.

Santro 2007: Probably not.

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

Hyundai Eon (2012) - It was my first car, the moment I walked into the Hyundai showroom it was love at first sight in a budget. I still have and maintain it, its just full of memories and still dont have the heart to let it go.

Hyundai Xcent (2016) - Been with me for 7 years now and driven 60000+ kms, She now takes care of my long highway runs.

Ford Freestyle (2018) - A white one, i call her frosty. She introduced me to pure TDCI (Diesel) magic. The acceleration the power and the fuel efficiency was all very addictive. And the maintenance is so cheap its cheaper than my Hyundai Eon and Xcent. But our Market still has the perception that fords are expensive to maintain.

A little off topic, the once car that i have drooled over for many years and still regret that i couldnt own one is "Volkswagen Polo TDI"

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

2015 Chevrolet Sail 1.3 LS ABS:
No. After weeks of research I convinced my dad (I had just started to work) to buy the Chevy Sail Sedan. Infact, he wanted to get the DZire/Amaze just for resale value and reliability. Personally, I'm not a fan of sub-4m sedans due to it being unproportional. Our next choice was Skoda Rapid but that didn't fit in our budget.

Come 2017, heard the news of GM India shutting down. (Dad's mumbling voices in the background). Now we have clocked a little over 50k kms and it's more of a bittersweet feeling. Infact, since this is our first car but also there were better options available at the time.

Build quality not great. Both interior and exterior.
Space is good.
Engine - The National 1.3d engine.
Torque - 200nm.
Rattles - Yes.
Highway stability - Average.
Efficiency - Good.
Resale value - Needless to say that.

Only thing I love about it now is the Torque. Planning to keep the bowtie car for atleast a year or two.

Now, the wife wants to upgrade to a SUV. Again, not a fan of sub-4m SUVs.

Looking for options in the 4.2-4.3m segment. Love the Kicks and Taigun. But again, Kicks not sure of brand image of Nissan and probable future resale value (which is a big question). Taigun - Pricey, but justified.

Not a fan of Creta. Seltos is okay.
SCross - End of days.

Patiently waiting for the Hyryder and it's MS sibling YFG. Hope that ticks the boxes of my need.

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

Yes, absolutely all cars were bought after much research and consideration!

1. Hyundai i20(2010) - While the car was a bit underpowered, but the looks were just gorgeous! Loved the way the car looked inside and out! Had a completely trouble free ownership till 2021.

2. Hyundai Creta(2016) - In my view the best looking Creta model, the current version doesn't appeal to me. Been using it for 6 years now and still find it an absolute delight to drive.

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

Answer: Yes.

Reason: Currently I own a Nexon diesel Base variant with added accessories. Except missing features (which are many) I don't have any complains about the car. Also considering the ever increasing prices of cars investing 22+ big ones on car (e.g. Safari XTA+) seems no more practical option. So I would happily go for new Nexon XZA+ diesel as it has everything I have on top my wish list.

Tata Safari - An absolute YESSS!!!! Currently using our fourth safari. Yes, you read it right. Three 2.2 dicors(including the current one) and one storme. Still not able to find a proper and relevant replacement for this beast.

Apart from safari, we have owned 4 Fiat Palios ( two 1.9 diesels and two multijets ) and three Maruti 800(s)

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

A key factor to buying the same car today would be the budget. So assuming I am again on a strict budget of what I spent at the time of original purchase

Alto 800 LXI - Probably not. This was my 1st car and I learned to drive on this, so had no clue about automobiles and hence didnt bother much about engine. If i had similar budget today and assuming this was still available, I’d stretch to get a K10 instead of 800

XUV 300 W6 Diesel AMT - YES!!! My current daily runner. When I bought this one back in 2019, AMT wasn’t available on Petrol or anything below W6. I really had to stretch my budget to get this one and I am totally happy with the decision. The driver seat is my “happy zone” and every time I am behind the wheel it puts a big smile on my face. I am glad they didn't have the Petrol option back then or I’d probably never go for the Diesel beast.

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

My opinions strictly. No offense to any owners.

Maruti Suzuki SCross : YES and we just booked another one. It was difficult to find a peace of mind , safe, spacious, value for money product in the 9-12 lakhs price range. Also, all the latest and greatest car have insane waiting periods.

Chevrolet Spark(Sold): Yes, only of Chevy had stayed back in India. It was a fantastic city car for B2B traffic. As they say, Chevy cars age well and they are not wrong.

Tata Indica Vista (Sold): Yes. The car served me absolutely fine for close to 80,000 kms. It was the most spacious hatchback during its prime time. The petrol engine was decent.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis: Might be. It is a very easy to drive car, especially with the AMT gearbox. The biggest downside is nowhere near safe IMHO. Also, the space is limited.

Maruti Suzuki Alto: No. Its done and dusted. There is no future for Alto kind of cars in India or anywhere now.

Tata Nao (Sold): Yes, if Tata launches with a decently powered electric engine. It will be arguably the best city car in electric avatar for our every crowded roads.

Your car purchase decision you are very happy afterwards

New car buying decision is not a small decision in middleclass family. It involves all family members and lots of calculations has to be done. Also middleclass families don't change their cars too often and use it around 7-8 to 12-13 years normally.

2.5 Years back I was in market for new car. My primary requirement was it has to be comfortable 5 seater car with good luggage carrying capacity. My wife never travel light, sadly. For 3-4 days vacation also we always have 4-5 midsize bags plus small 2-3 bags. If it is 5+2 seater, better. Also we didn't want low slung car as my mom has issues with it. Budget was not set as such as I wanted to buy a nice car which will fulfill my requirements.

I always like Honda city but it didn't fit my requirements. Its not very comfortable for 5 people and it's a low slung car. So sadly it went out of my consideration. Checked cars like Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Creta 2.0 design is very sad IMHO so immediately rejected it. Kia Seltos is a good car but top end models were going beyond 20 + lakhs and I personally find it very costly and thought its not worth paying that much money, so cancelled it. Cars like Nexon & Sonet are good but are little compact so rejected them.

Then thought of Innova. Called car for test drive and SA got it for me at home. Liked the car and it has good road presence. Car is comfortable and has good space inside. Last row was disappointing and for such a big size car, it offers limited space. Also with all rows up, boot space was very small. One more personal observation is it is not car like feeling when you drive Innova. Really downer was it's price. Top end was 30 Lakhs!! Second model was also 27+ lakhs on road. I found it to be very pricey, rejected.

Next visited Tata showroom. Really liked Harrier and Safari both. Personally I found Harrier better over Safari. Harrier has proper SUV shape and big boot space. Safari is 7 seater but last row was very difficult to access. Also with all rows up, no boot available which is really sad. Price was 23+ lakhs for Harrier which I liked which has leather seats and lots of features. Base models I didn't like much once you see leather one.

Now we started the thinking and calculation process came into picture. My initial thought was to buy car around 15 Lakhs, +/- 10%. I can easily go up to 18-20 Lakhs but Harrier which I liked was going beyond 23. Now my middle class mentality came into picture. My brain was telling me that no point in investing so much money into car which is a liability and value reducing asset. Mind wanted Harrier for sure. Brain says once car is out of showroom, you will lose 2-3 lakhs. Also yearly maintenance is high plus insurance and other costs will be higher. Sadly put Harrier on hold. Mind was still thinking about it though. In between my wife suggested to buy lesser value car now and after some time we can buy one more small car for her. (This was actually beneficial for her )

During all this process New Ertiga was always in mind. It's a wonderful car and I always like its versatile nature. New Ertiga's ride quality and comfort is really good and it can beat lots of other cars easily on this area. It's a spacious 5 seater car with lots of luggage space or it's a 5 + 2 seater with some boot space as well (200 + liters). You can go 6 people with lots of luggage too. After long thoughts, I booked Ertiga Zxi+ and fortunately got it delivered in 10 days (that time normal waiting period was around 3 months). I got Ertiga Zxi+ for around 11.3 Lakhs on road (did Insurance myself and didn't take extended warranty) and I am really happy with it. I am really happy with the car and started enjoying it as its a really nice car. Sadness of not getting Harrier soon vanished.

Now after 6 months of Ertiga purchase, I bought Honda CB350 bike for 2.5 Lakhs. Wife couldn't say much as I have listened to her while buying car. In last 2 years I have done 6-7 bike tours on it and really enjoyed it. It's a damn good bike and I enjoy every time I ride it. Its pleasure to drive on highways.

Fast forward to July 2023, I bought Ignis Zeta AMT for around 7.9 Lakhs on road for wife. Again its a very nice, VFM car for city use. It offers lot more for the price you pay in today's costly car market. I am enjoying its peppy engine and small footprint in city. Also this is my first Automatic car which is really helpful in city bumper to bumper traffic. Also biggest plus is wife is really happy with it and has become independent (don't have to go to boring places along with her now, LOL). She is taking car anywhere she wants alone without any issues. Due to AMT, car never halts anywhere, wife just loves that. She used to have lots of issues with manual.

Now when I lookback on my decision to buy Ertiga that time, I am really happy that I made the right decision. So in total I have spent around 22 lakhs but I have 3 good rides for me. Ertiga offers me lots of combinations for various family purposes and it does all things perfectly. My Mom simply loves it and prefers it over other cars in family like Hyundai Aura, Honda City, Nexon, etc. Ertiga suspension is really good and offers ride quality of the segment above car. My Honda CB350 makes me very happy whenever I ride it, specially when I take it on highways. Lastly Ignis makes my wife happy (When wife is happy, life is good, right?) & also make my life easy in city traffic. I also enjoy driving Ignis in city, fun to drive car for sure. So overall I am really happy with my decision that time to not buy costly car (23+ lakhs) and instead in 2 years I got 3 wonderful rides for myself. I guess my brain won over my mind and I am not complaining at all

Re: Your car purchase decision you are very happy afterwards

2 years back went out with budget of 55L for an SUV, test drove Legender with family. But it got rejected by votes of 3/4.

Luckily, got chance to get TD of newly launched Kodiaq 2.0 TSI of Dealer Principal of Brite Skoda. Whole family got so impressed by interior quality & me got bowled over by creamy power delivery that we booked on the spot itself. Till date it has done 30K KMs - still good as new & everytime it's driven, can't hide my smile. Recently got misfire issues due to bad fuel, thankfully it got sorted out soon.

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

I would go for the A-Star AT, no brickbats please.

A great car if used as a 2 seater, even on the highways. Good balance between ride and handling (though the back seats are a bit bumpy). The Torque Converter gearbox makes it a good driver's car as well. Though nobody wanted the car when new, it still has decent demand in the used car market.

I feel Toyota can relaunch the A-Star AT, wishful thinking

I10 Nios AMT - Would never buy again and have advised many to not even consider it.

  • Lousy horn sound when you Lock/Unlock the car.
  • AMT is a drag.
  • No hill assist
  • Unsafe 1*.

Though I am very happy with my Sonet HTX DCT, if I were to have a higher budget then would have gone with Creta FL IVT SX Tech, since CVT is better for city and also it has all the bells and whistles one needs and better comfort (suspension, noise insulation..).

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

2008 - Swift VDi. We were a DINK family and wanted to explore the country side on the weekends. Great driving pleasure and very efficient. I believe no one is making such cars now. The 1.3L multijet was no doubt a crowd puller at the time. Sold at 96K Kms.

2015 - Duster 85PS. Was a great upgrade from Swift and the carpet ride was awesome. Had good road presence and pulled like a tank. Was a trusted companion on many long drives and served us very well. Its sad to see Renault not able to build on this legacy. The K9K was a good mile muncher with little fuss. Sold at 89K Kms as we wanted a bigger vehicle.

2022 - Scorpio N. Ticked many boxes on the bucket list for me ; AT + 4WD + Diesel + BoF. This was a heart driven decision for me as this category is fast vanishing and I had to own (a fresh one) during my life time.

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

Currently we own an i20 Elite CVT Petrol and a Tata Safari Dark Edition AT. Coming from 2 Petrol Fords (Fiesta and a Figo), the Fiesta was catching on in age (11.5 years) and primarily driven by my Dad, I wanted an automatic for him for the ease of use it provides. Of the automatic options available in 2019, since I didn't want AMTs, the only couple of CVT options in the budget were an i20 and a Jazz. Although the Jazz offered a little more space, i20 was the choice we went with. Ease of use wise, it has been great for my Dad, but we found out the hard way that it was no match for the Fiesta on the highways. Forget about stability, it didn't offer even a least bit of comfort for the rear occupants, what with the suspension being as bad as it is. Even now, I would still consider owning it for my Dad since we have upgraded the Figo to a Safari.

When I started thinking about an upgrade to thr Figo circa 2019, the search started with an eye on the Ecosport, then moved to a Creta, then moved to a Harrier and finally bought a Safari in 2022. Although, it was a bit of a stretch on the budget at the time, it was in reality swapping the daily rides of my Dad and I which was pending since 2019, with similar expectations that we had with our Fords (The small i20 for the city use and Safari for the highway and big family trips).
