Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

My BIL and I decided to go for Tigor xz+. Didn't like the looks of aura, and dzire wasn't a safe choice. No other cars were in our budget. Although it doesn't have the smoothest engine in segment, we like it in the way that we can atleast tell that engine is on(we like to hear the engine while driving).

Done multiple 800-900km trips and it didn't break a sweat. Very comfortable seats, and for the price of 9.3 OTR still no car can beat it in terms of features and safety. Touchwood no issues as of now with the service centers.

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

It’s a personal preference to go with what car and to reject which one. If I was in your place I would’ve gone with Harrier.
For me it’s that fraction of a second that matters. That moment in which another speeding driver would make a mistake and crash into my car, or a lapse from my side that would get me off road, crash or any other way.
For that moment I am ready to spend whatever is required because it only takes a second. Then it’s up to the vehicle I would be driving or travelling. To save me or to not save me.
Why take a risk then?!

Completely agree with you as we too were in a similar situation in 2018 when we were buying Nexon but decided to buy the Duster
as it was a segment up at just 2 lakhs more.
Also in 2008 when my dad was in market to buy his first car he set his heart on the Sx4 (MEN ARE BACK) but his friends gave him the worst advice and he ended up with the Zen estilo.

Needless to say he regretted that decision for every second of the 10 years he owned the estilo (the car was quite problematic after the 5th year and was driven less than 10000km after that).

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

I love my S-cross 1.6, it's perfect for me in almost all respects. Frugal, powerful, spacious, and practical for our roads. But the lack of rear AC vents is a deal breaker in a car this size. 9 years ago, only a few cars had rear vents. Nowadays it's unthinkable, I feel temperatures have risen at least 2-3 degrees in the plains. Our highways have little greenery, it's like driving on a desert. Adding insult to injury, window tints are also banned. My next purchase will prioiritize air-conditioning/climate control more than anything else.

Ertiga offers me lots of combinations for various family purposes and it does all things perfectly. My Mom simply loves it and prefers it over other cars in family like Hyundai Aura, Honda City, Nexon, etc. Ertiga suspension is really good and offers ride quality of the segment above car. My Honda CB350 makes me very happy whenever I ride it, specially when I take it on highways. Lastly Ignis makes my wife happy (When wife is happy, life is good, right?) & also make my life easy in city traffic. I also enjoy driving Ignis in city, fun to drive car for sure. So overall I am really happy with my decision that time to not buy costly car (23+ lakhs) and instead in 2 years I got 3 wonderful rides for myself. I guess my brain won over my mind and I am not complaining at all
Very happy for you. Rare condition where buying a cheaper car worked wonders for you!
Considering the lack of reliability and constant niggles of harrier 2023 I would also say you dodged a major bullet.

Happy driving 😀

True. Ecosport did not have rear AC vents 9 years ago. I felt it would’ve been good. But they fixed a powerful AC in there, it’s equivalent to the 1.5 ton capacity. Since it’s a compact SUV it suffices. But yes, the next car this is most important.

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

I own a Honda City cvt and Tata harrier. Although city is a wonderful car and a capable mile muncher too, but the harrier gives me a joy which cannot be explained. The way it punches through the air on highways is magical. I have been one of those lucky souls who has had a niggle free experience with harrier. Is it a bad decision to buy an expensive car for middle class guy. Hell yeah. But you have one life and you need to find your happiness.
In terms of maintenance, both honda and harrier are expensive to maintain.

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

Probably wouldn't have bought the Honda WRV with the lackluster 1.2L engine but the spouse had the final say and so here we are.

The Nissan Sunny is still the favourite for family trips, given the roomy interior and cavernous boot. For its price point, I still think it was the right choice.

That said, we are presently considering replacing the WRV with an EV and the Sunny with a SUV.

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

Answer: Absolutely yes!

Cars I currently own: 2019 Honda City iVTEC and 2020 Ford Ecosport TDCI S.
Love both cars for their respective attributes.

On the Honda, the free revving iVTEC engine coupled with a light clutch and slick shifting gearbox, as well as the ease of driving within the city, the loads of interior space and boot space have been a boon in many different situations. This is a car with dual and very versatile personality - easy to potter around town in due to the tractable nature of the engine, and also can blast through expressways when you are in the mood for some high revving fun. No turbos to worry about- simple, old school naturally aspirated fun with loads of practicality to accompany it.

The Ecosport is one of the best cars I have ever owned and driven. Killer looks and clean design lines, superb refined engine, beast on the highway, feelsome steering, tight handling and frugal to boot. One of the best decisions I made to pick up the top end sports version a year before the Ecosport was pulled out of the market. The car has covered about 41,000 kms and it has been a wonderful experience owning this car. A remap is on the cards, hopefully sometime this year, to unlock the full potential of the TDCI engine.

Hope to retain both cars for many years to come. Given the insane new car prices, I am glad to have both these wonderful cars in my garage. Nothing currently in the market (within the 20-25 lakh price range) has enticed me and offers anything substantially better than my current cars. Each of them have their own special attributes and together they make a well rounded garage for my use cases.

Congratulations and here's wishing you lakhs and lakhs kilometres of safe driving and fun.

I personally think you should have gone for the Harrier.
The Ertiga isn't a a safe car especially for highway trips nor do I highly rate the Ignis although you said it will be driven in the city itself. I learned this the hard way when I purchased my first car, a 2017 Baleno.

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

Definitely

We have two cars at home which are driven between my brother and I interchangeably.

First is 2016 Hyundai Creta petrol auto (TC): Got it fully knowing the low fuel mileage of Hyundai's petrol and high comfort factor and it provided exactly the same. Gearbox is smooth and reliable, car is comfortable, music system is great and car is still going strong after all these years although total mileage is low at around 60,000 kilometers on the odo.

Second is 2022 Tata Safari auto (TC): Our first diesel car, and since we are NCR based that made the decision all more difficult. It took many months of discussion and multiple test drives of different cars, took a chance and booked TATA car with all its horror stories that forums are full of. Another issue was Diesel BS 6 engines that need more care than its BS 4 counterparts. It's been almost 1.5 year and 25000 kilometers and the car has proven to be a good comfort oriented vehicle. Thought process that led to this decision was that the diesel engine is better for such big and heavy vehicle from point of view of fuel mileage, better third row comfort in the car, availability of comfort features some of which were not available in cars that competition offered at the time.

Very similar thought process on why two cheaper cars actually work out better than one expensive car . This makes more sense !

Back in 2019, I had booked a Safari Storme. Just because it was going out of production and I wanted a Safari in life. By fluke, took a test drive of the Nexon diesel, loved it (and it had airbags additional over the Safari EX that I had booked). Cancelled the Safari, bought the Nexon.

Fast forward to 2024 -

I had an intermediate ownership of the Ignis ZETA AMT (an excellent city car that I planned on owning long term, but sold suddenly due to a lottery I won).
And now - I own a brilliantly maintained, stage3 tuned VW Jetta TDi Highline (this is the lottery for which I sold the Ignis), an as good as new Polo GT TSI 1.2, with just 10k kms on the Odo, and a brand new purchased Nexon Diesel XZ+ MT literally maintained DIY more or less. All 3 - extremely capable cars for their roles and really fun to drive (understatement in case of the Jetta).
All 3 added - I purchased for around 23L INR.
Back in 2019 - the Safari that I was about to buy was around 16.5L. Had I bought that one - I'd not have owned these brilliant machines today at all. Might even have cribbed a bit about the missing airbags, inability to have a navigation capable head unit and so on, and would still have been using an Alto K10 as a daily driver. Disaster.

Overall I always feel having 2 cars rather than just one costly car, makes a lot of practical sense. And going the pre-owned way does support this a lot too.

In fact - finally I can answer "YES" to the title of the thread, with the 3 cars that I now have .
Congratulations on your very practical acquisitions. Wish you unlimited safe and happy miles with all your new vehicles.

@ curiousnewbie: How can we judge someone else's car/phone/apparel buying logic and decision making so quickly? To each his/her own, yeah? It works alright for the OP, they bought the cake, they are enjoying the party that's what matters.

Re: If you were to buy a car today, would you have bought the car(s) you currently own?

1st car : Chevy Spark- No regret as it is as good as any entry level from Maruti Suzuki. If I have to buy once again in time travel 2011, will never buy it. I would have gone to Chevy Beat or Ford Figo.

2nd Car: Ertiga ZDI (2012) - It is a perfect car for our requirement, it can be replaced by another Ertiga only.
