May 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Many segments do not have Maruti as the leader. Only in lower A, B1 and B2 segments have a Maruti vehicle as the leader. Interesting times

Re: May 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

SUZUKI: I wish to see market share below 40.Hope other manufacturers launch new VFM products like Carens and XUV700.*

Hyundai: The Venue is still selling strongly despite a facelift on the way. I20 deserves more numbers. I think it's suffering because of the CSUV assault.*

TATA: Bring back Hexa now. People will appreciate this time.Market share is important for both buyers and manufacturers, so now is an excellent time.

MAHINDRA: Going great guns, the new SCORPIO could be their biggest ever success.

KIA is now my favourite manufacturer because of how well they understood our market in such a short period of time. I clearly remember their CEO stating that they would position themselves as a premium brand compared to Hyundai. Yet here they are, undercutting Hyundai in all segments. Link to the interview......At 2:55, he mentions the strategy.

*
HONDA : Happy selling 2 products.Have sold their brains.
No competent products in hot SUV segments.

TOYOTA : Just keep giving us INNOVA and Fortuner. We really dont expect anything else now.

VW/SKODA : Taigun at 1200 should be an extreme worry, unless their target is to sell just 8000 total combined units of all 2.0 products.

Re: May 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Consistent high sales of Tata Motors is simply impressive. All models in their portfolio witnesses increased demand and sales. Punch is doing the best launch performance ever for TML. Never thought Nexon would reach current levels against the strong competition, 5 star crash rating was the turning point in Nexon's life cycle.

Remember Harrier doing 300 figures ? Yup the SUV that was written off and once crushed by the strong Chinese and Korean competition now tops the charts in its segment.

Total wholesales despatches of Harrier+ Safari stands at 99,107 (83,337 Hector/+) units since January 2019, might have crossed 100K production milestone by this time.

H1 2022 sales stands as below,

XUV 700 : 23,860 units.
CRYSTA : 23,756 units.
Harrier+Safari : 23,413 units.
MG Hector/+: 9241 units.

Re: May 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Watching Nexon at no.2 gives the same happiness that I got watching Senegal qualify to semi-finals of 2002 FIFA WC

Kudos to TATA motors for making this happen and that too without a proper automatic. With that this car probably can reach no.1 spot, who knows. None of the TATA cars are sales dud now, even the tigor is doing ~4000 consistently post the EV launch. Take a bow TATA

Re: May 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Poor AC issues are hurting Skoda/VW and will also reflect in the lower numbers for Slavia/Kushaq/Taigun for some more time to come. Bad month for them, and worse will follow if they do not sort these issues at the earliest.

Octavia numbers are below 100 (dispatches are lower than Superb) after a while, purely production issues or the demand itself is low is not clear.

Do the Honda City numbers include the hybrid? Much better numbers.

Re: May 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Tata is the manufacturer of the month for May 22! Really good show by Tata & really happy for them. Hard work pays, sooner or later. You just need to be patient. Punch is super duper hit for them. I never expected Punch to deliver so many numbers consistently. Best month for Harrier and Safari combo, 5K is great number considering it costs 20-27 Lakhs.

Maruti still struggling with chip shortages. Ertiga, XL6 combo doing simply great for them. MSIL clearly prioritizing it over other cars to fight with Carens, good strategy. New Brezza is next big thing for them.

Mahindra doing good. SorpioN is the car to watch for. Current Scorpio still doing wonders for them, great numbers. With Ford Endeavor gone, they should try to push Alturas more. With Fortuner prices going out of roof, they have good chance to sell more. Hope they will deliver more Thar/XUV700 & try to catch Tata

Hyundai doing as usual, nothing great to note. Kia struggling to deliver more cars due to chip shortages I guess, Seltos numbers are showing that.

Kushaq/Taigun already struggling? Or they are prioritizing Slavia/Virtus?

Toyota happy with what they do, selling overpriced Innova & Fortuner. Maruti cars getting them some good, much needed numbers.

Nissan/Renault struggling too much now. Hardly any numbers. Guess they are happy with exports.

Honda City doing good, nothing else. They need to do something, very fast, else they will be in big trouble.

No numbers for Jeep Meridian?

Re: May 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Lack of VFM positioning by Skoda / VAG for Kushaq and Taigun has started to show up. The interiors appear gloomy (for Kushaq) and lack the premium touch expected from a INR 15-20L car.

Skoda / VAG needs to step up its game and not the take the German car loving customers for granted. As a Skoda Rapid owner who is in market for a new car, unfortunately, I see limited options other than to gravitate towards Mahindra despite the long wait times. Hyundai / Kia don't meet safety standards and Skoda / VAG lost me on the interiors.

A more premium interiors, perhaps in beige, would have done wonders to the positioning of the otherwise excellent cars by Skoda / VAG.

Re: May 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Amazing performance from the Nexon! If it had a proper automatic, I would have considered it along with Slavia and might have picked it up instead!

Škoda/ VW should resolve the AC issues ASAP, this is very important to keep the numbers else, there’s a risk of losing the momentum.
