Next-gen Honda CR-V to receive significant updates; unveil expected in mid-2022

Quote:
he fifth-generation Honda CR-V was unveiled towards the end of 2016 and got a facelift about three years later. Fast forward to March 2021, our spies have put their extra-long telephoto lens to good use by catching on camera from afar a prototype of the new crossover while undergoing handling tests at a facility somewhere in Europe.

With this being only our first look at the sixth-gen CR-V, it's no wonder the prototype is covered in camouflage from front to rear. That said, we can't help but notice the crossover seems to have grown in size while the front and rear overhangs continue to be quite large. The overall design appears to be more angular and the hood seems longer and flatter than before.

The front end reveals a slightly bigger grille with a new pattern and is flanked by sharper LED headlights that seem to give the impression of a split design. That said, the front lights likely have a one-piece layout as we’re tempted to believe the divided setup is only because of the disguise applied across that wide strip.

Eagle-eyed readers will notice the side mirrors now sit lower on the doors rather than at the base of the A-pillars, presumably to reduce wind noise and/or better aerodynamics. A prominent character line above the door handles extends almost the entire side profile of the CR-V, from the headlights to the taillights.

re: 2023 Honda CR-V spied

As a CRV owner and someone who really enjoys driving and travelling in the CRV this is welcome news of a new model. The proportions are increasing and that is not good, cars are as is it is long and now its getting longer ? Guess they want to make that 3rd row compulsory and more spacious. It also seems to be getting the new family look started by the HRV / Vezel.

Hope Honda India brings it to India in its hybrid guise and doesnt offer old engines. A surprise and icing on the cake would be a full EV CRV launch in India. Fingers crossed.

Hahaha but I can dream right. It’s wishful thinking that they are listening to a loyal CRV customer. The perpetually sleeping guys at Honda India.

If history is any indication, then Honda will introduce the all new CRV with much fanfare in India with full page paper ad buy outs, in 2025. It will offer a pathetic 1.5 lit turbo petrol engine, no EV, no hybrid, no diesel. And it will discontinue it in 2026, leaving all its loyal customers in a lurch once again, a la the Civic fiasco. Don't have any high hopes from Honda India.

Next-gen Honda CR-V to receive significant updates; unveil expected in mid-2022

The next-generation Honda CR-V is set to get significant cosmetic updates. The spy images indicate a completely new design, bringing it in line with some of its smaller siblings.

Reports suggest that the next-gen CR-V will mainly receive cosmetic updates. Although, it could come underpinned by an evolved version of the Compact Global Platform, used on the current model.

Talking about the design, the spy shots of the next-gen Honda CR-V showcase the SUV featuring a wider hexagonal grille upfront, new LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs, a straight roofline and a revised set of LED tail lights. The interior is also expected to receive significant updates, including a revamped cabin with an all-new infotainment system at the centre.

Well if it isn't a sight for sore eyes. I quite like the design. Hope they bring a decent powerplant and decent AWD capabilities.

Re: Next-gen Honda CR-V to receive significant updates; unveil expected in mid-2022

Why do I get a feeling like the Japanese design is missing here and I see more Korean in the front and European in the back? Well except for the lights.

Also as vredesbyrd mentioned, powertrain specs were always been the chink in it's armor. Like in previous generations, sells at Scorpio spec engine with double the price.

Re: Next-gen Honda CR-V to receive significant updates; unveil expected in mid-2022

Looks like CR-V lost its quirky rear end design, for a new design quite similar to that of a Volvo XC90 and that’s not a bad thing at all.

With petrol cars gaining popularity (at least in cities), Add a nice petrol/hybrid powertrain(where Honda is good at) and price it well; Honda has a good opportunity to provide tough competition to Toyota, till Fortuner gets ready with a hybrid powertrain.

Re: Next-gen Honda CR-V to receive significant updates; unveil expected in mid-2022

It would never be a bed of roses ever again for Honda in this segment.

I am hoping going by Honda (and most other carmaker) trend, the newer generation will always be pricier than the outgoing ones. So the current gen models that sell upwards of 30 Lakh OTR with CVT gearbox will become pricier inching near the 35 lakh mark.

At that segment, we have many capable models including Tucson, Tiguan, Gloster, C5 Aircross. Even Crysta and Carnival too are there if not Fortuner.

Unless CRV has some compelling things to bring on table, including powertrain, its offerings are comparable to the dominating models of 15-20 lakh segment, with some of them offering way better.

Re: Next-gen Honda CR-V to receive significant updates; unveil expected in mid-2022

Always been a fan of the CR-V but I’m quite disillusioned with Honda to even wait with bated breath on this, even though I will be in the market in 2022 / early 23 for a similar type car.

Although most of what I have written is unlikely - but for whatever its worth, here goes.

My wish list from Honda should / when they go to market with this in India:

# Solid build quality:

Honda build quality has badly deteriorated over the past decade. My 2009 Civic was much better built than even 2014 CR-Vs that I have seen. I’d like to see a product that is more Compass like in the quality of engineering at that price. At the minimum Tucson level of build (who’d have thought a decade ago that Hyundai could represent the aspirational bar to Honda on such matters).

# Powerful, fun to drive engines:

In both petrol and diesel; in automatic and manual. Honda has started offering completely out of sync engine options to the segment and price it launches in. A sad reality for a brand that one would pick just for the engine a decade and a half ago. No 120 BHP engines in Rs. 30 lakh cars please.

# Range of engines:

2022 behaviour please. Be bold. Be disruptive. Differentiate.

I would be delighted if I could see a range of offerings from them including at a minimum petrol A/T, diesel A/T and a full hybrid petrol power train. They have all these capabilities already. Would be nice to see these being harnessed. Same goes for the new City segment crossover. If they can launch a City hybrid the crossover can come in hybrid too.

# Man maximum, machine minimum:

Remember old strengths. I used to love the original Jazz for their magic seats. Then they went and removed it in subsequent iterations from top of line A/Ts. Honda has the ability to do certain things brilliantly. Hope it will bring the full force of these abilities to Indian shores without undue cost / feature cutting at a sensible, profitable cost.

Honda is like an old star of the Indian market that needs to find favour again with the market in segments outside the City. For that, it needs to work hard and behave like a new entrant. Not sit on a high horse disconnected with reality.
