Re: Nissan has no plans to exit the Indian market

I don't get why people are getting so worked up after Datsun's exit.

It was clearly reported in 2019 that the Nissan-Renault Alliance is looking to shut down Datsun for good as a part of its restructuring effort. Yet people still want to speculate things.

And let's be honest, Datsun shutting is something that should have happened long ago. Especially after seeing their vehicles closely

Nowadays you can't even trust what CEOs say, forget what a random Service Manager of a random dealership says 🙂

Re: Nissan has no plans to exit the Indian market

Not just a pinch of salt, but an enormous, massive pinch of salt. I am getting multiple deja vus seeing this post. Ford exit India post the Ford-Mahindra JV breakup. We are seeing Datsun leave, and also news of the Renault-Nissan divorce. I suspect Nissan's quit now more than ever before.

But surviving on a single product is something that I do not understand. Also, there is no news about new product launches from Nissan. In fact, I expected Nissan MD to follow his "No plan to exit India" line with plans for future products.

Re: Nissan has no plans to exit the Indian market

Ok Nissan, let's just cut the chase and leave on a good note. Ford did the same thing, not so sure about the GM though.
No one even realised when Fiat left India for good.

India is not an easy market to please and with just one model on sale, how are you planning to feed your dealerships, employees, vendors etc.?

Earlier it was the dealership fiasco that stopped you from going all guns and now you yourself don't have anything to bring in plate! Lol!!

Let's agree that you were never serious about India and all the planning, vision etc was for name sake.

Good bye! All the best with your business in other countries!!

Re: Nissan has no plans to exit the Indian market

MG has shown that there exists a market for the 22-26 lakh EV. What is stopping Nissan from bringing in the very matured Nissan Leaf EV to India?

Nissan should play to it's strengths. Tesla is not going to become big in India for at least 20 more years. The world is turning to electric. After Tesla, Nissan has the most experience with EVs.

Ford quit because they didn't have anything on the roadmap which would be a mass market success in India (4-4.5m SUEVs) in the next 10 years. Nissan has been hiding that Ace up their sleeves since an eternity. Its time they use it. If they can't, they should just pack up now instead of extending their agony. Ford was doing better volumes per month right up to 1 month prior to their exit. The writing is on the wall, pivot or perish.

It just occurred to me that he did with Magnite what Skoda wanted to do with Kushaq! It's not an exact comparison, but inarguably, he chose the right segment for Nissan's brand image and strengths in India. Let's just wish that Nissan under him will do what other Japanese - Honda and Toyota - couldn't. A turnaround takes years but he might be planning a quiet change and is off to a good start.

Re: Nissan has no plans to exit the Indian market

Statements are the easiest thing to put out, aren’t they? All Nissan needs to show intent, is to launch some capable products. Not cut price disasters badged Datsun, or frivolous press releases which neither commit nor deny anything.

I wonder if they can get the Leaf in (as CBU if necessary)? With all the buzz around electric cars it could at least create some positive buzz around the brand.

How about midsize, crossover cars (like Juke)? That’s where you get some sustainable profits even with mediocre sales. Don’t bother trying to take the fight to Maruti and it’s hatchback dominance.

At the other end, you have the field wide open 30 lakhs onwards for a capable full size SUV. Yes, I am looking at Pathfinder.

Wishful thinking on my part? I guess

What is stopping nissan from bringing Kicks epower to India. It would have given them the first mover advantage over Honda. The car also seems much better than CITY EHEV. I am sure that there would have been many takers in India for that.Without new models how long they can survive here?

Re: Nissan has no plans to exit the Indian market

I just wish they do not leave. They have just delivered a brilliant product which shook up the market and everyone was just forced to take note of it. To top it, Magnite scored 4 stars in GNCAP with stable body shell. It has all the modern day safety features accessible to a common man. I personally admire this effort from Nissan. Now is the time to be aggressive, capitalise on the success and attention Nissan is getting and bring more products. Let's hope the best for Indian consumers.

Re: Nissan has no plans to exit the Indian market

Nissan may not be planning to exit the Indian market now. However, there are some news articles citing that Renault is keen on exiting the Nissan alliance at a global level. If that happens, then it would result in Nissan rethinking its strategy for India. Currently, Nissan and Renault benefit from each other since they share everything apart from the body shell. And it some how feels like it’s Renault who have a better footing in India due to their wider product portfolio and also much better sales network in India.

If they part ways globally, then Nissan would have to look at increasing investments in India since they no longer can share costs with Renault.

That would be the real test. For now, Nissan has no reason to exit.

What is the difficulty? As far as I know Renault and Nissan are produced in a single factory by both the partners. I don't think they have seperate plants. The workforce must be same, even the mechanicals must be same under the skin. It must be like a restaurant kitchen making Aloo parathas for one shift, and masala dosas for the next!

The issue may come at the dealership level. It must be possible to work out something even at that level, perhaps authorize them to sell and service both brands. After all there should be no difficulty in servicing the Toyota Glanza in a MASS or the Suzuki Baleno in a Toyota service centre.

Re: Nissan has no plans to exit the Indian market

Nissan’s Indian operations could be blindsided for no fault of theirs.
Renault is deep trouble financially and their troubles have grown exponentially due to war in Ukraine. Renault will pull out of Russia and that’s going to be a huge loss of revenue. Add to that the huge investments needed to develop in EVs. With this context, it’s not unimaginable for Renault to pull out of India, which is not a profitable market for them anyways, to conserve some funds. Should that happen, there’s no way Nissan can operate Chennai plant, with a capacity of 450k units per annum, alone.
