Re: D.I.Y: How to purchase a fancy / choice number at the Tamil Nadu RTO

Hi All,

I have booked Fronx Delta+ 5MT and wanted to have the last 4 digits which will add up to 9 as this has been my lucky number.

I asked my Relationship Manager at the Nexa dealer and he said that for Karnataka RTO we need to get a DD of Rs.20,000/- from any nationalized bank and there will be extra Rs.5,000/- for the paper work if done by the dealer.

And in the Parivahan website there is no Karnataka state in the list for public user sign-up.

The dealer says that the number will get automatically selected based on the availability and the fancy numbers will be blocked for auction. I don't need fancy numbers like 6666 or 9999 or 8055.

This amount is too much and there no mention of the price for selecting freely available numbers of our choice.

Can someone who has experience on this in the Karnataka RTO please comment ?

Re: D.I.Y: How to purchase a fancy / choice number at the Tamil Nadu RTO

UPDATE :

Well, not really an update, the process is pretty much the same. I got another choice number this month, but at another RTO in the city. My earlier post was about my experience with TN-19 RTO. This time I was at TN-06 RTO.

After tracking the movement of numbers online, I walked into the RTO with the Disclaimer form and ID proofs. I quoted my desired number to the officer, he checked the availability and went ahead with blocking it.

I was asked to pay the fees online and we were done.

TRIVIA :
During a friendly banter with the officer, I was told that if 2 people approach together asking for the same number, the person who is required to pay a higher fee (in this case car vs bike) will be allotted the number. If the fee value is the same, then they will draw lots to pick decide who gets the choice number. And this 'picking lots' game happens quite often at this RTO due to the demand.

Government approval number is of course a different ball game. The current series is TN 06 AE while a person approached with a GO to allot number from TN 06 AT series for his Hycross.

Rs 40000 for current and current plus 3 series and from there it increases to
Rs 60000, and goes all the way up to Rs 200000 according to the series jump.

In Tamil Nadu, user sign up details are generated by RTO officials when applying for a choice number at their office. The purpose of this log in is to pay the fee online.

Check this URL, it shows the numbers available for Karnataka. https://fancy.parivahan.gov.in/fancy...lNumbers.xhtml

The fee is Rs 40000. The balance Rs 16000 could be the concern BHPian Bottle is referring to:

Won't the series be different for car and bikes? I do not understand how within a series there can be a contention between car and bike?

Unlike Delhi, where the series says DL 4 C AF XXYY (C being car) or DL 7 S AR XXYY (S being scooter), there is no such differentiation in Tamil Nadu. And I think it is the same in Karnataka too.

BTW, when I get a choice number for 4 wheeler I feel shortchanged and when I get it for a 2 wheeler I feel like I got a great deal just because of this reason. The same number costs either Rs 2k or Rs 16k based on the number of wheels.

I finally got the number of my choice with the last 4 digits adds up to 9.
I checked the same website to verify if my choice number is available in the respective RTO.

The Karnataka RTO is different from the other state RTOs.

My dealer got me the car invoice copy and the unfilled letter / form for the choice number in Kannada. I got a DD for Rs.20,000/- from a nationalized bank in the name of SECRETARY STA BENGALURU. Went to Shantinagar RTO office and submitted the filled letter along with the DD. The person checked both and asked my to drop these in a box located at one corner. In the evening got the SMS that my choice number have been allotted. Next day went to the same RTO office and collected the Acknowledgement Receipt and gave this receipt to my dealer for further process.

Correct. In KA, there is M series for cars- MA,MB,MC ...... and J series for bikes/2 wheelers - JA,JB,JC.....

KA02JA1234 -> Bike
KA02ME1234 -> Car

So if both the car and bike choses 1234 number then there is no contention between them since the series is different. Hence I did not understand your statement - " I was told that if 2 people approach together asking for the same number, the person who is required to pay a higher fee (in this case car vs bike) will be allotted the number"

There are these special numbers called Advanced Registration numbers, colloquially referred to as government numbers which are blocked by the government (in TamilNadu) and are not part of the open series, unless someone doesn’t book them until that series comes in, which is very unlikely and next to impossible.

The letters I (similar to I), G (govt. vehicles), O (similar to 0), N (govt. buses) are also not available to the public.

These numbers are allotted to government / official vehicles and to private people who pay the requisite fee within 60 days with prior approval i.e Government Order (G.O) from the State Secretariat. Even government officials have to pay the stipulated government fees for their private vehicles depending on the series chosen. The only exception is that MLAs can get an advance registration number free of cost once in their lifetime.

I’ve known private people who’ve paid 1L for a number costing 60K including commissions and agent fees in 2011. But usually govt. officers can get them with just the govt. stipulated amount.

I had got these numbers (single digit & other repetitive) for 3 of our vehicles purchased in 2016, 2017 & 2018 - I paid 40K-60K for them i.e only govt. stipulated fees as all of them were available within 8th series from the current one. However now, single digit numbers are available only from the 11th series onward in ALL RTOs within Chennai (2L) with some repetitive numbers being available form 5-8 series. People are ready to spend big for fancy numbers compared to 5 years ago and a price hike may be implemented soon.

I have uploaded the list of of numbers here. This is applicable only for the state of TamilNadu. The initial 4 series for the govt. numbers (including current series) is 40K, 5-8 series is 60K, 9&10 are 1L, 11,12 and so on are 2L.

What is this unfilled letter that you have mentioned ? And who needs to sign on this - the registered owner or representative (if sign required)

The signature must be done by the owner / applicant.
Below is the letter that I had filled without my signature before submitting.

I got this letter from my car dealer. I don't know if this letter / form is available in the RTO office. We need to attach the Invoice copy (which should have the engine and chassis numbers) and when receiving the acknowledgement letter from the officer the next day at the Shanthinagar office he asked me for my ID, so I showed him my Aadhaar card.

The form has changed a little, and is available at the Transport dept office on 1st floor in the Shantinagar BMTC building.

However, lot of confusion on the process, esp if one wants a number in the near range of running series (latest number + upto 1000).

For rest, a DD for 20k in favour of "Secretary STA" + the form and invoice copy looks to enough. It looks like if one pays for the car even as it is in transit, one can get the invoice copy and book the number. Once the car arrives, the registration can be done with that number.

NOTE:
Parking in the MLCP is a PAIN. One of the worst I have seen. Had to be careful going up the 6 floors, and when returning, Two 3-point turns for each floor.

The actual DD is for Rs.20k and through dealer it will be Rs.25k.
If you want to save Rs.5k, then you have to go to the RTO office in Shantinagar and drop the DD and the Letter requesting for the "Number of your choice".

For more details, please see my previous posts in this thread.
