It's good to know that number can be purchased before the vehicle is purchased. It would have been great if this was available in TN too.

OP and me are very much talking about the same TN. In my case it is KK Nagar RTO for TN-09. You can get the running series number from the dealer, since they visit and get vehicles registered on a daily basis. The RTO formality for choice number is pretty straightforward, and takes only one sitting, you'll be in and out in 25 minutes. The fact that it was hassle free, was the reason we did it again for the scooter in May 2020
May be the no cash policy is a recent development? Two RTOs that I talked to were clear that they don't accept any payment at their offices and all fees have to be paid through the portal.

Totally agree on dealer being a good point of contact to know the number assigned for the day.

The 2 instances we did were in November 2018 and May 2020, both were made at a counter in the KK Nagar RTO.

Re: D.I.Y: How to purchase a fancy / choice number at the Tamil Nadu RTO

I had the smoothest experience while, purchasing the regn number of my choice from Vahan portal in Delhi.

When I got confirmation from my dealer in Delhi, that the XUV 7OO booked by me is in transit and shall reach in around a week, I just explored the vahan site out of curiosity, since I had no intention of purchasing a VIP number, which I thought was an expensive hobby. Anyways I registered an account and explored the various series available in Delhi. In Delhi the reserve price of any number is 25000, with the two digit number and other special numbers having higher reserve price.

Finally, I found 7007 number in one series as available, so just out of curiosity booked it. I had decided not to pay anything over the reserve price in bidding if it happens, since this wasn't in my greatest priorities. I just paid the reserve price of 25K online and the bidding process opened on Monday and no-one else bid for it and the number 7007 was allocated to me which was valid for purchase of vehicle upto 60 days.

When my XUV 700, arrived at the dealer stockyard, I did the PDI and completed the other formalities and payment etc. I gave the dealer the VIP no allotment letter, which he used in the car registration process. Just received one call from RTO and an OTP which I have to confirm. The HSRP was received in two days and RC took around 6 weeks.

Absolutely smooth process, without having to talk to a single individual. Only issue is the high reserve price in Delhi. I think it's much lower in Haryana and Chandigarh besides other states. However it's much better than the earlier system on Dealer-RTO-Touts nexus.

Okay, my experience of RTO not accepting any payment at their office and asking us to pay it online is as recent as April 2022.

Envy you for the seamless online experience. I agree with you on the pricing though. It is quite steep.

The process to purchase this is very simple and straightforward.

Visit this website - https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/fancy...ic/login.xhtml
Thanks a lot for all the detailed information.
Have one question though. I fall under the Meenambakkam RTO (TN-22) and when I search for the 'Open Series Status', it shows multiple series - all of which are Active (see screenshot below).

Is there anyway to find out what is the exact running series?

Thanks!

Hi callvvijay,

The current running series for TN22 is TN22DW. My new car got registered on Wednesday and I had opted for a running number this series has already crossed 9900. So I expect TN22DX to be the new series from tomorrow or Monday.

You are able to see all as active because there would have been people that opted for a choice number like 0001, 0099, 1111, etc., So all series are shown as active.

If you go to this URL - https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/fancy...lNumbers.xhtml, it will display all the available numbers, a quick glance will tell you what is the series running now.

For old series, only the numbers that adds up to 8 and tier 1 fancy numbers that have not been purchased would remain. This is one way to distinguish.

If you are planning to get a number today, your option is open between DX 0110 - 1110. Of course by end of today, at least 100 numbers would be exhausted.

Like Shanksta mentioned, multiple series would be open but will cost on the higher slab if you are jumping your series.

It happened sooner mate. DW is exhausted and DX is the open series to choose from at nominal rates today.

And BTW, hearty congratulations for your new set of wheels.

Re: D.I.Y: How to purchase a fancy / choice number at the Tamil Nadu RTO

Some not so pleasant news with the price for fancy / choice numbers in Tamil Nadu.

Two wheelers get a 3x price rise, 4 wheelers get a 2x price rise for choice numbers. I feel this is a steep rise.

The fancy numbers pricing seems to be justified given the demand.

Re: D.I.Y: How to purchase a fancy / choice number at the Tamil Nadu RTO

Fancy number demand has always existed in TN, not really from Polladhavan.

The choice number from running series was 16000 even if the ex-showroom price is > 10L. I got mine last month.

If you wanted an out of series number (excluding specific numbers like 6666,9999 etc) then the cost was 56000.

That's true. The movie reference is unwarranted in the story. I shared the news link for the new rate card. In Tamil Nadu, the craze for a particular number dates back to the time when the then Chief Minister MGR's Ambassador with registration number 4777 went on to get a cult status with everyone from his party fighting for the coveted number for their rides. Apart from this, the fancier looking numbers had its own fan following over the years.

I also got my preferred number from the same RTO (TN19) earlier this year.

But I'm not happy with the way this price rise is justified as public demand for fancy and choice numbers. Whatever happened to a 10 or 20% rise? The State government just went for 100% raise (200% raise in the case of two wheelers).

I think out of series numbers are just additional cost (not bribe). I was told 56000 for out of series vs 16000 for current 1000 series for 4-wheeler (rates are pre October 2022). I've done the latter 3 times.

Other option if you want to spend less is to wait for your choice to be available under running series, which maybe faster in RTOs like TN-09, TN-22 or TN-07 but not in suburban RTOs like TN-18, 19.

Yes , I am at TN06, current series is AE, so for anything outside that we need to get govt order at secretariat. RTO completed all formalities to check number availability without fuss but at secretariat just to accept application for GO was asked to pay , rate was fixed with no negotiation to accept the application

What are the current rates for GO number (1111, 3333, 5555) within first four series in Tamilnadu? Any reference would help.

I think it should be 40000 only, I could be wrong but I don't think there is any specific rate for numbers. If it is available in current 4 series 40k, if it's gone you need to move to next 4 series which is 60k and so on
