Maruti Suzuki has issued a recall of 19,731 Eeco vans over incorrectly marked wheel rim size.

According to the company, the recall is being undertaken to inspect and rectify incorrect marking of wheel rim size, if any, on the wheel in some of these vehicles. Maruti has confirmed that it should have no implication on performance or safety.

The issue came to light during a routine inspection. It is said that the wheel rim size was incorrectly marked in Eeco vans manufactured between July 19, 2021 and October 5, 2021.

Owners can check if their vehicle is among those affected by entering the vehicle chassis number on Maruti Suzuki's official website.

which begs us to ask the question: How did it pass Quality control at both vendor end and OEM end? In all probability, Maruti, sources rims from Wheels India, (like most OEM's). It is one of the biggest Tier-1's in our country and has a solid PPAP, (production part approval process), in place. What happened? And what's with the mandarins at Maruti's incoming part quality inspection department?
It's just luck that this has happened here in India where we have next to no laws to hold OEM's accountable. Had this happened anywhere in US for example and a customer fitted a wrong tyre based on the erroneous rim specs and the vehicle got involved in an accident or some wheel/suspension related component failure, Maruti's goose would have been cooked.

Yeah, it's quite surprising that so many wheels got assembled without a flag being raised.

Seems like the specs on brochure and owner's manual would have been correct. Markings on the wheels were messed up. It's important to find out what spec was wrong. Diameter or width ? If dia was marked incorrectly, it's impossible to fit wrong size tire. So, no safety issues here.

Only concern might arise if the width is marked grossly wrong. However, tires can be fitted on +/- 1/2" width without issues. Infact, such flexibility is given in two global standards JATMA and ETRTO. If a customer or mechanic tries to fit tire needing wheel width beyond this range (just by going with marking on wheels), it's caught easily unless fitment is done blindfolded.

Because it's a low priority low severity issue That's why it must have missed by most of them.
