Toyota has officially launched the Hilux pick-up truck in India. It is available in three variants with prices starting at Rs. 33.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Hilux shares its underpinnings with the Fortuner. It features a bold front end with a large hexagonal grille that has a chrome surround. The front bumper has an integrated skid plate and L-shaped fog lamp pods.
Inside, the Hilux comes equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, ventilated seats with leather upholstery, 8-way power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control and automatic headlamps.
The Hilux packs a decent safety kit as well. It comes with 7 airbags, a rear-view camera, Vehicle stability control, traction control, front parking sensors and Variable Flow Control steering
In India, the Hilux is offered with a 2.8-litre diesel engine producing 201 BHP (204 BHP - 6MT) and 500 Nm (420 Nm - 6MT). The engine is paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. It comes with a four-wheel-drive system with an electronic differential lock, a limited-slip differential and Active Traction Control.
Toyota Hilux ex-showroom prices:
- 4x4 MT Standard - Rs. 33,99,000
- 4x4 MT High - Rs. 35,80,000
- 4x4 AT High - Rs. 36,80,000

Just 2.5 lakh difference between this and Fortuner 4x4 AT?? Priced too high i think, unless Fortuner prices are going to increase a lot in the next few months lol:
Oh wait- they have already indicated a 4% hike from April, so difference may swell to 4 lakhs, and then the Hilux just may make sense.:coldsweat
Just three lakhs difference between the Fortuner manual 4x4 and Hilux STD. Should have priced it more sensibly. The segment will remain what it is. A niche lifestyle segment.
Hope Toyota brings the 2.4l version too at a lower price point, but then why bother when you can have fat profits.:p
Bit Overpriced IMHO. But the segment is Niche and there is no competition for Toyota (Except Isuzu). The 'T' badge always commands a premium. There are people who look for Premium + Reliability factor and 'T' badge scores in that area.

Super wrong prices, most of the bookings were made with expected pricing of around 30 Lac Ex, maximum. Won't be surprised if there are cancellations.
Will work for someone who has multiple other vehicles, unlike overseas, where people use these trucks as primary vehicles, here these will remain in the niche segment, unfortunately.
Isuzu may get a breather :)
I too feel its grossly over priced for a market like India. Any information on how this segment is performing ( Isuzu numbers? )
The pickup truck community in itself is quite small in India. This was also exaggerated by the absence of multiple options for customers to choose from. The only options were the Bolero Camper (quite crude), the Getaway (never quite sold too well), the Xenon (was used quite extensively as a commercial vehicle) and finally the Isuzu D Max V Cross. The Isuzu turned out to be the only perfectly balanced truck but even for the price missed out on a lot.
The Hilux, with its bullet proof Toyota reliability, could have taken over the crown easily, but for almost 40 lakhs on road, i really doubt it. I feel that Toyota has gone just too far with the pricing. Yes, there are people buying the Fortuner Legender 4x4 for almost 50 lakhs on road, but that does not take away from the fact that it is still an insanely overpriced machine. Similar is the case with the Hilux. It will probably see some good sales, but the price is just unjustifiable.
Thanks,
D.
Amazing. I am not suprised that Team bhp got this pricing spot on a few months before the actual launch.
I have said it before in various forums and i say it again, "this is overpriced", however dont think Toyota had much choice in this matter considering their offerings in india and the prices they claim.
TBH everyone should know that no way this vehicle was coming below 30 Lakh, when they announced that the price would be similar to the Compass we expected it to be around 25 - 30 but well they went beyond our expectation. No way I am defending Toyota for the pricing but it is what is. At least we are finally getting Hilux in our shores. Maybe in future we might get other base variants.
I expect it to sell in decent numbers (at least in the first lot), Hilux has a long history, and there are lot of people who are willing to get it.
When the BS6 Isuzu Dmax V Cross prices were announced, it looked like end of the road for Isuzu in India. But looking at the Hilux prices, V Cross may suddenly start looking VFM.
Also, IMHO, the Isuzu wins in the looks department by a good margin. It evokes a desire to own a pick up truck. To me the Hilux looks just ok.
Wasn't the Hilux supposed to compete with Jeep compass as per their leaked internal sales kit? As per this price list, The Hilux 4X4 high AT will cost around 46 lacs on road in Bangalore! The Jeep compass, which many think is overpriced itself, maxes out at 38 on road (bangalore) for the top variant TrailHawk. Hilux looks super over priced to me!
Moreover, quite a few mid variants of the more practical Fortuner are well within reach with that kind of budget. I think you would only buy Hilux if you are specifically looking for a Hilux.
Usual Toyota pricing. Their limited stock for this will fly off the shelves though. I suppose even if it were priced 10 lakhs more, they wouldn't have a problem selling 100 odd units with every lot. Insanity IMHO.
Coincidentally, as the armed forces have decided to replace their 35K strong Gypsies with a modern vehicle, all these Toyota and Isuzu trucks and the Thar soft-top have a serious chance to win the deal. Only these kind of vehicles can assure
fast movement of armed people in and out of the vehicle in an emergency situation through the tail door, and
can carry guns and ammunitions.
(Even then, none of these vehicles can offer the agility of the narrow and light weight Gypsy. A long wheelbase soft top Jimny... Anyone for that?)

New Gurkha don't have a soft-top version.

But in the snowy northern regions, a Petrol is the ideal option.

Not sure.
Don't think that the Hilux would win the bidding, even if Toyota gives it a shot. The Thar and Gurkha are contenders, more so the latter. The soft top Safari remains a mystery.
Ofcourse, Maruti could pull a wild card and bring a soft top LWB version of the Jimny, but the Army is said to be keen to go all diesel to ease logisitcs.
The pricing isn't surprising given that it's basically a Fortuner in truck format.
The Hilux is aimed at a completely different target audience than the Fortuner. I can't imagine that many people who want to buy the Fortuner would choose the Hilux even if it were priced 10 lakhs cheaper.
The Hilux is a niche product at the end of the day, and Toyota knows this. Niche products are invariably priced for profit, and not for volume.
