Toyota Innova Hycross to be revealed in November 2022.



- New MPV will most likely go on sale by January 2023 and will be sold alongside the Innova Crysta.

- Hycross will be the first Innova to ditch the ladder-frame architecture for a much lighter and advanced monocoque set-up. It will also feature front-wheel drive set-up

It seems like Avanza which is sold if South East Asia,

Avanza is not Innova or Innova segment, it comes with 1.5L engine in 4.4M format
It will be competing against Ertiga / Carens
I doubt it can carry reliable badge of original Innova which is capable to do 3L / 4L /5L /6L kms comfortably with minimal cost of ownership

4.4M MPV is an attractive segment, well built reliable product will serve users with large family and commercial (yellow board) demand will move form Innova to Hycross

But discontinuing Innova Crysta will leave a void in the premium proper 7 seater segment which Hycross / Avanza will never be able to fill.

It important to remember what is Innova's biggest brand attribute. Its (i) bulletproof reliability and (2) long productive service life. I hope Toyota does not end up damaging them, especially no. 2. Look at a ten year old, 200k Km Ertiga and then look at a 10 yr old 200k Innova and you will know why the latter so beloved by its customers.

Toyota may live to regret that decision. I still hope they brand it something else (e.g. Voxy) and not the Innova

This is not replacement of Innova but definitely coming soon and in hybrid.

Innova will continue in Petrol at least until next generation. Diesel may or may not come back but this variant has nothing to do with Innova.

AFAIK The current Gen Innova Crysta will continue offering the Diesel Engine (which is already RDE compliant) while the new Innova will only be offered only in Petrol/ Strong Hybrid.

This hardly looks like a utility vehicle. Also, being based on a FWD powertrain, it has lost that 'take me anywhere' nature of the Innova. So, this neither looks nor is it based on the Innova but just another FWD crossover in a sea of crossovers. Good strategy this from Toyota, they know the anything with an Innova badge will sell, so they just stamped it on a bloated up Avanza. Hopefully, this is as reliable or better than the Crysta and also plusher and much more feature-rich.

Looks like Toyota is covering its bases in the 7-seater segment

1. Existing Innova Crysta for the rugged/go anywhere/ taxi use case
2. New Innova Hycross for the more refined ride & comfort, urban yet fuel-conscious use case - also will appeal to consumers who dont like the taxi image of the Innova

Hope Toyota does throw in some visual cues/ bling to differentiate the look from the existing Innova. Does anyone have info - if the Hycross will sport a sun-roof ? Would hope so, given now the Hyryder has it

Also hope the Hycross is a 'true' Innova - quality, reliability, fuss-free ownership without any cost cutting (like the Etios). I imagine sensible pricing is asking for too much from the profit-oriented Toyota

The 2.0L hybrid powertrain (184ps and 190Nm) shared between the Corolla Touring Sport and Corolla Cross is what the Innova HyCross will be getting most likely.

For the Corolla Touring Sport, the performance looks adequate, with the added weight for the Innova this is going to feel lethargic for sure just like how the Hyryder/Grand Vitara strong hybrid feel.

Driving in the city will be perfect, but out on the highway it won’t be, which is the Crysta’s strong-point.

190 N-m of torque - really ! Must be the lowest even vs lower segments

The Carens Turbo petrol makes 242 N-m - the heavier Hycross will make do with just 190

If the current crysta sells along with hycross in its diesel guise, I am sure it can be a successful combo considering the current Innova petrol doesn’t have any USP as it is just another petrol mpv. But the hycross will have Hybrid as its USP as it will be much more fuel efficient. Also for the taxi segment Toyota will have the Diesel Crysta, but if diesel Crysta is stopped that would be a huge mistake from Toyota india.

Comparing the torque numbers for turbo petrol and hybrid may not be fair. For a hybrid, most of that torque will be available from 0 RPM because of the motor. For the turbo, most of it will come later in the rev range only. So the hybrid may still be a better performer than the turbo till one stays below sane speeds ( Say 80-100KMPH).

The news of it being a monocoque is true as per my friend who works in Toyota. Launch in November is also on track as per him. Being a monocoque the kerb weight could be well within 1400KG. Currently, it weighs 1750+. So I feel that petrol hybrid will be adequate and performance figures will be at par with the current Crysta.

This is some good news for fans who are looking for a competing product from Toyota and also makes it feel next-gen. They have started that with HyRyder and now HyCross. But I would interested to see what is the price point they would launch HyCross.

When Innova Crysta was in the 30L OTR range, Fortuner was in 40L OTR, and now Fortuner being in the 50L OTR, they might push the bar here as well. Or would they keep this in the price point of current Innova Crysta and make the Crysta Diesel unit much costlier, in the 40L OTR.

Let's see, but if we are going to lose the Diesel Innova, that would be a real blow for the market.
