Rumour : VW Polo could return as an import in GTI form

Ashish Gupta, brand director of VW India, ruled out local production of the latest Polo, he did drop a hint that that company was evaluating the launch of the GTI in limited numbers.

Volkswagen India is mulling the launch of the new Polo GTI under the government’s 2,500-unit homologation-free rule for CBU imports.

Quote:
This international-spec model got a further refresh in 2021, which brought its design and styling in line with its larger sibling – the Golf. The latest GTI version of the hatch is powered by a 204hp, 2.0-litre TSI mill, which brings down the 0-100kph time to a claimed 6.5sec. Power is still transmitted to the front wheels via a 7-speed DCT auto gearbox and an electronic differential.
Quote:
When launched over five years ago, the fifth-gen Polo-based GTI was priced at Rs 25.99 lakh. Introduced in a three-door body style, the hot hatch packed in a 192hp, 1.8-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine that gave it a top speed of 233kph and a 0-100kph time of a claimed 7.2sec.

And it will be priced at 40L ex showroom and will struggle to find buyers and VW will try to offer discounts after saying whole lot was sold out at launch.

Fantastic. A car that everyone wants available in the market but won't actually buy.

Re: Rumour : VW Polo could return as an import in GTI form

The biggest issue with the previous Polo GTi was limited practicality 3 door set up, mated to an unreliable and not modification friendly DQ200 gearbox, at a price that was literally on par with the Octavia vRS - which was paired with the 2.0TSi and 6 speed DQ250 gearbox that's had better innings in India.

Once the prices were cut to reflect the true value, they were sold out fairly quickly.

Hope they've learnt & try to price + equip this properly from the start itself + launch it with enough time to clear stocks before announcing any news of bringing the Octavia vRS in to avoid a repeat of last time.

This will be a very interesting thing to watch out for. A VW pocket rocket is always going to be special.

If they are able to launch the car for 24.9 ex showroom, they might find few takers but given the way Skoda priced Octavia with similar engine, it looks VW would be pricing the GTI for something close to 30L ex showroom. At that price selling 200 units also would be a struggle.

Expecting VW to goof up with the pricing again.
Just one of those cars that I would wait for 5 years, and then pick it up from the pre owned market, Just saw a GTI for sale in Coimbatore, The wish to buy it is always there, But the family isn't convinced with a 2 door.

Re: Rumour : VW Polo could return as an import in GTI form

Can’t see GTI getting launched anything below 35 lacs as in Europe alone it costs around 28-30 lacs. Although even at that price we don’t have anything thing here in Indian market with that kind of performance, but at the end of the day it’ll only be a niche product as majority of the people can’t put that kind of money on a hatchback.

It’s heartbreaking to know that there won’t be any locally produced Polo anymore. 4 mtr senseless rule to be blamed. Indian auto taxation rules just aren’t suitable for global products and hence we have all the cheap quality worthless cars plying around.

End of an era for all the Polo fans !

Ah well, it might still do some good numbers as it is the new MQB Polo and does not resemble the one sold here in India (unlike the previous GTI). In that sense it will be a unique offering. VW should seriously consider the 4-door version - I am sure there are many takers. I am expecting pricing to be close to 30L ex-showroom.

If they price it sensibly, I will put my money for this pocket rocket to share the garage with Abarth Punto!

Audi Q2, which is of similar size and same engine struggles to sell at 35L ex-showroom, no way VW badge can do any better.

Re: Rumour : VW Polo could return as an import in GTI form

Hope the news is true, it’s good to see these cars on the roads. The pricing might be a challenge, but the fact is no price conscious buyers would pick that. So those who can afford or even willing to put money can buy this (more so at discounted price), others will keep making fun of VW and their pricing.

Though last GTI sold at good discount, those who got at that price were lucky. Most of them who bought are not ready to part with it and it has a huge mod potential. It has a good demand in used car market and holding the price.

So even if they launch at 40 lakhs OTR, there will not be anything closer to it in the market today at that price, with no signs of VRS. So hope VW will get that, irrespective of the price, so if we can’t buy at least we can see them on roads.

Also if I am not wrong this might be the engine, turbo and other related mechanicals that come in VRS and not in current Octavia/Q2/Tiguan etc. and hence more mod potential engine.

Mini Cooper

That being said, the purchase power of the consumer has gone up considerably, though the only handicap of the GTi is that it's a hatch and hence will always be a niche.

On the other hand a GTi version of the Virtus might make a better business sense.

I wish they bring down the Golf GTi, now that cool factor would've been sub zero.

If I am not wrong currently available Mini Cooper in India has lower power figures than speculated Polo GTI and cost few lakhs more.
Golf GTI will only push the price more north, though would have been good
