2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

Re: February 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks, have been waiting for this thread. My key thoughts-

1. What a debut by Carens- 5000+ units. I would expect it to sell more- 7000+ per month easily, such is the value proposition of the product.

2. Look at all the products from Tata doing ~2k+ units . And in an environment where all manufacturers are struggling from the semiconductor crisis, seems Tata has really got its supply chain planning right. The Safari-Harrier twins are also benefiting from XUV700's long waiting list i believe. The Punch is doing well, though sadly, it has an engine that lacks "punch".

3. Toyota Innova seems to be taking the brunt of Carens' launch? or it is just Toyota handling the chip shortage poorly. Not much of an impact on Fortuner from the new SUVs- Aircross, Kodiaq, Tiguan. Let us see what Meridian does to this segment.

4. Ertiga has had no impact of Carens, atleast this month. Baleno starts where it left off- AMT notwithstanding, and there are still 8k+ takers every month for the S-Presso yet only 2k for the good looking Santro! Saw plenty of S-Pressos in Jharkhand and Orissa.

5. 1200+ Polos sold/dispatched last month? Most dealers are not taking any more bookings, so a bit surprised.

6. How long will Nissan survive on Magnite? Do they have anything else coming up? Sales are slowing and am sure Punch is taking away a lot of customers from this capable car.

7. Compass sales trending up. No doubt the discounts are helping. Upcoming Meridian, and the Cherokee will restore additional faith on the brand and sweep away brand exit talks.

8. All about design when it comes to Mahindra. Their cars have always been well priced, but design has been the one key factor that defines success for them. XUV700, 300, Thar (copy yes but good copy), Scorpio pulls in the numbers as their customers see them as good looking. the KUV, Verito etc lacked good design language.

I think that Magnite losing sales has more to do with Nissan not being able to deliver cars on time than people losing interest. Sad as the car is such a value proposition.

The EV Sales data looks very different to what we are seeing from other news outlets.
I have 2892 EV sold in January 2022 by Tata Motors (includes Tigor and Nexon)
and 2264 for Feb. Looks like the Jan 2022 data is for last year and not this year.

Re: February 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks Aditya for the data:

Additional comments as below:

Auto Industry sees a bit of relief from the semiconductor availability, and has impacted to a lesser degree when compared to last month, but some struggled more to provide cars in meeting the demand.

Around 3,02,756 passenger cars were sold in the Indian market for February 2022. The sales remained stagnant and dropped by 2 percent when compared to February last year, but shows a growth of 2.7% on a M-O-M basis.

Market Share of the Top 2 OEMs dropped and the Indian Auto majors (Tata & Mahindra) are gaining hold over the successful new model launches by each of them.

- The market leader Maruti Suzuki Market Share dropped to 44.2 % from 46.9% (Y-O-Y). Negative growth on a y-o-y basis but a 3.9% growth when compared to Jan-22.
NEXA as a brand sells 22957 cars.

-Hyundai’s was badly hit with the growth being negative at 14.6% percent (YoY) and a market share drop of 4.4 %. Growth on a M-O-M basis was rather flat at 0.1%

- Tata continues to perform well and has been fighting hard to rise to the No.2

- M&M volumes shot up by 79.2 percent in Feb 2022 over Feb 2021 and was placed at the fourth spot in the ranking table.

-Kia jumped back to the fifth rank and sales increased 8.5 percent YoY.

- Renault sold 6,568 units of its cars in February 2022 compared to 11,043 units in the same period last year. The majority of sales for Renault come from Kwid, Triber, and Kiger.

-MG sold 4,528 units in February 2022 compared to 4,329 units in February 2021. Improved Astor supplies helped the OEM gain 4.5 percent volumes YoY

Highlights of Feb-22 dispatch/sales figures:

- Maruti's , Swift, Dzire and WagonR are the top 3 best sellers in Feb.
- 7 of the top 10 best sellers were from Maruti Suzuki while Tata and Hyundai had 1 each.
- The Top 25 Selling Cars constituted almost 77% of the cars sold in February 2022
- In terms of volumes, Maruti Suzuki models contributed to just over 53 percent volumes in the Top 25
- In the Top 25, Maruti has 10, an average; the volumes were 12,356 units per car. Hyundai with 4 models in the list averaged 8,550 units per model and Tata had 4 models in the Top 25 (equal to Hyundai) and averaged 7,838 units per model.
- With 3 models in the top 25, Kia’s overall volumes averaged at 5,946 units/model.
- Ertiga / XL6 duo have been consistently raking in impressive volumes for Maruti Suzuki. Ertiga alone ranked 6th was the best-selling MUV for last month.
- UVs dominated with 13 models in the Top 25. (9 SUV+4 MUV), combined volume of 105k units.
- Hatchback had 10 models and surpasses the SUV in the top 25.
- MUV had 3 models with Ertiga leading the pack.

Largest segment (volumes) – UV

- The top 13 models (in top 25 list) contributed to 85k units of sales in Dec.
- UV market share has grown from 16 percent in FY2007 to ~ 45 percent in FY2021
-Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra’s have been the two largest contributors in this segment
- Almost every second PV currently sold in India is an UV

Segment-wise Car Sales:

-SUV sales have risen to an all-time high in the Indian market and almost all the OEMs have an offering in this segment.
-Both Compact and Mid SUV segments have grown considerably and are now easily outselling the hatchbacks/sedans.
-Sedans are on a declining trend. Can Skoda Slavia /VW Virtus change this?

Re: February 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The Jump in S-Presso may be more from the taxi segment as I have seen so many S-Presso Taxis (CNG) on road now a days.

I have observed this before too and want to ask as why is Grand i10 NIOS considered B2 segment car? Isn't it supposed to be B1 segment? Because i20 is also B2 segment which is ok.

Re: February 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Looks like Carens is taking a big chunk from Seltos. Or its the supply constraint.

Similary Superb sales is really reducing MoM, with Octavia steadily doing same numbers. Is it due to low demand for Superb? Or somewhere I also heard there is no supply of Superb until they launch 2022 models

Re: February 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The Camry is now outselling the Superb. I always felt Skoda is outpricing themselves and the reason the Superb sells is because it had nearly a 8-10L price diff to the Camry OTR.

Now this difference is down to half. For 10-12% price difference the Camry is well worth it

Toyota has for once heard the market and kept updating and upgrading the Camry without fiddling too much with the price unlike Skoda.
