A car without valid insurance is the biggest red flag for used car sale. Unfortunately this is overlooked by many. Panels getting repainted is not a big thing. But many used car buyers only look for such cosmetic things. If a seller is genuine all service records should be readily available for inspection. I have no idea why it is thrusted upon the buyer to verify the records.
The mantra for used car purchase should be "If you are in slightest of doubt, walk away."

I am quite surprised that on the day of taking delivery, The 5000 bonus which was promised has been revoked. This left a sour taste in our mouth ,

Re: Review: I bought a used car from Spinny

I purchased a Tiago from Spinny in March-23. Here is how my experience was.

Until now I had been using Bajaj Pulsar in Pune but I started feeling the need to get a car. I have been a regular reader of Team-BHP and with all the knowledge, I started planning to buy a pre-worshipped car.

My search started with Spinny and after weeks of search, I found a 2019 Tiago Revotron XZ with an odometer reading of 52000 Km. during my search, I noticed that Tiago was selling like hot cakes and that is why, I immediately booked the available option by paying a booking amount of Rs 10,000.

Later I noticed that the car was already a second owner and I was going to be the third owner. This concerned by a bit but I still decided to go ahead with the inspection at service center.

The car arrived at my doorstep the next day and I took it for a spin. Found no issues during the drive. The inspection report from service center highlighter following points.

1. Car has been in a minor accident a couple of months back. The bumper and fog lights were changed under insurance.

2. No mechanical issues and the car had been regularly serviced as per the manufacturer’s recommendations.

3. I also got the phone number of last owner and I decided to call him. The second owner informed me that the reason for sale for the first owner was migration to US. The car was sold by second owner as he upgraded to a new car.

4. The car also had new battery and new tires.

With all this information, I decided to go ahead with the purchase. The payments were cleared and the car was delivered to me the next day. Overall experience with spinny was good but I did face some hiccups during RC transfer. This was sorted after an X (formerly twitter) post.

I completed eight months of ownership and I have driven 7000 Kms. I also took car for road trip to Nashik. The ownership experience has been trouble-free. The cost of first service was Rs 6000 with no issues highlighted. Here are some of the pros and cons as per my experience with Tiago

Pros
- Sturdy build quality.
- Compact and easy to navigate in traffic.
- Loaded with all basic features.
- Safe and proven safety rating.
- Stable at highway speed.
- Peppy performance
- Power windows can be rolled up after turning off the ignition.

Cons
- Noise levels
- I am obsess and I don’t fit very well in seats
- Mileage of 12 Kmpl in city.

Re: Review: I bought a used car from Spinny

Hello distinguished BHPians...

Just wanted to check with you and gain from your wisdom if the deal I'm getting from spinny is worth it or not.

2012 Honda City V AT Petrol
MH12 RTO
MFG - May 2012
Regn - Aug 2012
77k on the odo
Only 1 servicing history available, from Nov 2023 at 65k KM

Spinny is quoting almost 4L for this.

From my POV, I have listed down a few pros and cons.

Pros :
1. Automatic is kind of a must, with the nature of traffic in the city these days.
2. Paddle shifters are enough for the 'fun times' on the highway drives
3. Honda's engine is an engineering marvel.
4. Very low depriciation, if we choose to upgrade after 1-2 years.
5. Safe and sturdy build, I can be assured, even if my better half drives it on her own.

Cons :
1. Interiors are quite dated, seat covers will be must and additional expense
2. Only TP insurance being provided, I'll have to pay additionally for comprehensive and engine cover.

The use case will be primarily in city, for office and nearby chores and maybe 20% of highway drives thrown in, over the year.

Please enlighten me on the questions I should ask and what things I should check during the PDI. Also, if someone can help me with the servicing costs I can expect, it'll be very helpful for me.

Re: Review: I bought a used car from Spinny

This might seem off-topic but would you not need to re-register the car in 3 years, as the car is already 12 years old? Should that be baked into the car cost (discount rather?) - though I am not aware of how much we need to pay for re-registration for 15 years old vehicle).

I have same challenge with my second hand Ecosport from KA41 re-registered in 2020 to MH12, which would need re-registration in 5 years.

The re-registration after 15 years is called FC (Fitness Certificate) and valid for 5 years. For my 2002 Palio 1.6GTX, it was something under 5000/-, that I had to pay as the FC fee for 5 years. So it's not a lot of money. If you find it difficult to do the job yourself, an agent can help you.

Like SwiftnFurious mentioned, it's not re-registration, but just renewal of fitness.

My point to add is that since it is 3 years, cant really negotiate on that if buying a 12 year old car. But since the price wont be much (Road tax is already paid for), you can consider it as a one-off expense at that point of time.

Thanks candor and swiftnfurious for the clarification.

And yes, satyakidas, we will need to get the Fitness Certificate redone at the end of 15 years of car's life. As confirmed earlier, the cost isn't much. Even if we decide to take the help of any agent, it'd be probably within 10k.

The major hurdle I believe would be RTO transfer. That will need quite a few rounds of the Delhi RTO. I've been told that they are notoriously 'unfriendly'.

Nevertheless, we've bitten the bullet and received the car. We are still in the initial days, clicking travelogue worthy pics and figuring our what accessories we'd need and what other's we'd want.

Re: Review: I bought a used car from Spinny

Guys, what is the deal with Spinny not helping with the insurance transfer? I am told the car has full comprehensive insurance but I have to go to the dealer to get the insurance transferred. Can anyone share their experience on insurance with Spinny?

Re: Review: I bought a used car from Spinny

Bumping as I have the same query. I'm selling off my Aria to Spinny (and optionally buying a Brezza from them).

The Aria has comprehensive policy on it and no claims.
The Brezza has 3rd party insurance (red flag on a 2 year old car).

As I understand to claim NCB I have to wait till the Aria gets sold offf by them, which will probably take a while.

IF I do buy the Brezza, should I just forget about the NCB transfer and instead just transfer the existing 3rd party to myself as comprehensive?

No, you don't. NCB belongs to the insured person, not the insured vehicle, is not transferable and can be taken off the policy as you please.

Who is your insurance provider? Asking them for NCB transfer options should help.

There will usually be a few:

1. You can pay a 'NCB Recovery amount' on the existing comprehensive policy, and obtain an NCB certificate (valid for 3 years). The policy on the vehicle stays comprehensive with NCB reset to ZERO, and you can buy another policy for a different vehicle with your NCB applied (declare you having an NCB certificate upfront during policy quote process). This procedure is not just limited to selling cars. Say you have a small hatchback with an accumulated 50% NCB, and you want to add an expensive SUV to your garage. You can, in theory, take the NCB off the hatch's policy (where it won't make much difference to renewal premium) and have it applied to the SUV's (much more expensive) insurance.

2. If you & Spinny can agree on it, you can cancel the OD part of the policy (only the TP cover is mandatory). Spinny might adjust that amount against your sale value, but you'll recover that from the prorated refund you get from insurance. You can claim an NCB certificate in this scenario too.

3. You can also ask for something called an 'NCB Confirmation Letter/Certificate'. This is pretty much your current insurer giving you a note saying you had X% NCB the previous year, and your new insurer should accept that when issuing your new policy instead of starting from scratch. This is usually useful when switching insurers. This letter is usually valid for 90 days. Digit gave me this option but I never actually used it, so can't vouch for acceptance levels across insurers.

#1 is the cleanest, least-hassle procedure. It's between you and your insurer, no Spinny/buyer involvement. I used it last year as I didn't want to mess with the existing policy on the car I sold. Paid about 1200 rupees as recovery amount to claim my accumulated 50% NCB, and used it for the new car policy to get a 50% discount on OD premium.

If you have a high NCB accumulated (50% is the max), ask your current insurer for a NCB recovery amount quote. If it's a reasonable amount acceptable to you, pay up, get the certificate and have the NCB applied to either a new policy, or an existing one at renewal.

Quote:
IF I do buy the Brezza, should I just forget about the NCB transfer and instead just transfer the existing 3rd party to myself as comprehensive?
If you do buy this car after a PDI, just use your NCB certificate and get a fresh comprehensive policy in your name. Cancel the TP cover the car comes with from Spinny. Best to have clean records from day 1 instead of getting mixed up in insurance transfers and such.

Re: Review: I bought a used car from Spinny

Thanks Chetan this is super helpful. Its clear, I'll go with Option 1 and get the recovery amount. I'll sell off the Aria which has a substantial premium of 50% NCB and will get it on whichever new car we get. Thanks again.

Thank you for your detailed explanation of the procedure. I have one doubt.

Generally, when we renew our Insurance policy annually, certain NCB discount is already given to us by the Insurer which is deducted from the total payable amount.
Will the Insurer still provide an NCB certificate for reducing premium on our next car policy purchase ?

An NCB certificate can be applied to a policy during any renewal, and the higher number would apply.

If the policy being renewed has a lower NCB than the certificate you provide (say first year renewal which has NCB @ 20%) and you have a certificate for 50% NCB obtained from another policy, you can get it applied during renewal and your NCB will now be 50% instead of 20%.

In my case, for example, since I provided the NCB certificate from my previous car's policy during a new car purchase, my new car's policy started at 50% NCB instead of the standard 0%.

NCB certificates are valid for 3 years from date of issue, so if one anticipates an expensive car purchase in that time period, they can actually hold onto it and use it where it'll provide most benefit.

Guys, I am getting a Spinny delivered car on Sunday. Any specific pointers that I should keep in mind? The overall experience has been rather mixed (more towards poor than good). I will more share details once I manage to get the car on Sunday.
