Re: Tata Motors dispatches beat Hyundai in December 2021 | Now the no.2 car maker in India

Besides the planned EV and CNG launces, to take the number further up TATA needs to bring (1) Creta Rival (hope to see something with 1.5 L petrol engine) and (2) something in Bolero class (may be Sumo with new design language).

At the same time they need to put equal focus on strengthening the Service Centre capacity and quality. As a TATA car (Nexon) owner I have not faced any issue in last three years but there are other customers who does not have the similar experience. Hence Capacity, Quality and consistency is key. This will create Brand loyalty.

Mahindra numbers are impressive. I think a major jump in the sales. Seems like they have finally sorted the chip issue.

Re: Tata Motors dispatches beat Hyundai in December 2021 | Now the no.2 car maker in India

The Fight for Rank 2 in the Indian PV Industry, the story so far: Hyundai Vs Tata

- The Passenger vehicles industry in India touched a handsome 27,41,917 numbers this year from April'21 to February 2022

- The war between rank 2 and rank 3 and how has their contribution been shaping up over the last 11 months of this year.

- Hyundai did have an aggressive start in April where the lead over Tata Motors was as high as 23,906 units.
-To be noted that never after that the monthly lead touch the 20k mark. In fact, the lead kept dwindling down every month, until December when Tata Motors was able to take over Hyundai for the first time in a long time. ( keep in mind the production crunch that Hyundai did face this year. )

- Everything seemed going its way and Hyundai was on its way for a 20% market share. However, every since Quarter two The trend turned towards falling market share.

- In the second quarter the market share fell below 17.5 % and then continued to drop to 14% and eventually YTD in Q4 it is at 14.74%.

-Tata Motors on the other hand continued stable growth in their market share Quarter After Quarter and Month after month. Q1 saw Tata motors touching close to a double-digit mark and they did surpass the double-digit mark in Q2

Hyundai and in fact is rearing to take over the rank 2 positions, with model launches and refresh round the corner, with which they would certainly want to consolidate their position as a formidable number 2.

Re: Tata Motors dispatches beat Hyundai in December 2021 | Now the no.2 car maker in India

Hyundai, despite being Korean and having an advantage with microchip supply, is unable/unwilling to ramp up production and reduce the 6-8month waiting period for their cars. The Koreans are very set in their way that despite being SO VERY profitable that Kia broke-even in 15 months, even then they're in the same situation with respect to ridiculous waiting periods.

Tata OTOH needs big time investment to cater to servicing their cars. They just need to insist their operating procedures on post-sales service are maintained - but they don't have the leverage to put off their present dealerships. AFAIK TATAs' dealers are allowed to expand without restriction, but that is not enough to leverage with them, so new service outlets need to be created to maintain capacity & quality.

I think the Korean twins are managing almost half of Suzuki’s numbers in India. They may be reluctant to increase capacity for lack of projected demand especially till the executive segment. In the premium segment, they have burned hands with the sedans & actually fear Indians may not pay 50 lakhs plus for their premi SUVs.

They are content with whatever profit they are making from existing capacity which actually is cash cow for them. Add to this, there’s a perception amongst aam junta that a vehicle with waiting period is definitely superior. They are happy to play along with such thoughts.

Re: Tata Motors dispatches beat Hyundai in December 2021 | Now the no.2 car maker in India

Race for No 2 spot intensifies: Tata Motors beats Hyundai Motor 2nd time in 6 months.

In the past six months, December 2021 to May 2022, Tata Motors overtook Hyundai India in the domestic market twice and became the second largest passenger vehicle manufacturer in India.

TATA overtakes Hyundai by a margin of about 1048 units.

During May 2022, sales for Tata Motors were driven by a surge in its record EV volumes which rose to 3,454 units from 2,322 units during April 2022.

It is yet to be seen how the current fiscal would fare for these OEMs.

Note: Hyundai has not officially declared its May sales figures yet.

Would Hyundai continued as a dominant no.2 in India, had Kia not launched it's own operations?

Combine Hyundai and Kia sales, they're comfortably ahead of Tata.

Re: Tata Motors dispatches beat Hyundai in December 2021 | Now the no.2 car maker in India

Kudos to Tata to consistently dispatch 40k cars a month !

Hyundai had a maintenance shutdown for 6 days in May which impacted production and I expect them to get back to around 50-55k once supply chain issues stabilize.

Quote:
“Both HMI plants in Chennai observed the scheduled biannual maintenance shut down, leading to no production for 6 days in the month (May 16-21). This reduced the vehicle availability in the month, affecting May sales numbers (domestic as well as exports),” said Hyundai Motor India in a statement.

Re: Tata Motors dispatches beat Hyundai in December 2021 | Now the no.2 car maker in India

Well done Tata, feels great to see Indian companies doing well and top sales chart. I'm sure M&M will soon catch-up with Scorpio-N and XUV700 gaining popularity.

At the cost of oversimplifying here - Tata saw a gap is market, read Safety. They committed to safer products for Indians, had acquired better platforms to build better cars, designed their cars to at-least gather 4-stars initially (i remember, Nexon, when initially launched was 4-star), lead some brilliant campaigns to highlight their USP - lo & behold they are now on top of the charts.

One very good change in many buyers now is that safety ranks high on 'essentials' list for car purchase - so, their campaign has not only garnered sales, but, should i say 'corrected' buying criteria. Thank You again Tata.

Well, what next? Continuous improvement, newer products, market leading upgrades, EV focus....and many more will take them to top of the chart.

Good luck Tata and Mahindra.

From where TATA has pulled themselves is a feat in itself. I feel they still should have an SUV to slot between the Nexon and the Harrier, update the Tiago, get a feature rich Harrier (ADAS etc), launch a Carens/Ertiga competitor. This would catapult them to 50k+ sales every month and maintain the number 2 position.

Alternatively they should also launch a sub brand on the lines of Nexa for their EV lineup.
