October 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

What's shocking is that Ertiga and XL6 combined(essentially the same car) have more sales than Alto.

Maruti & Hyundai appears to have produced and dispatched their more expensive \ profitable vehicles first given the semi conductor shortage. It is a good strategy as those who want to buy the more affordable cars will nevertheless wait due to lack of options.

Re: October 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Interesting observations:

Citroen - Increase from steady 40 numbers in last 2 months. Is it due to the CKD kits being received in more numbers?

Ford - (Left blank intentionally)

Hyundai - Kona volumes getting back? Battery problems solved?

Jeep - Compass is established, need more products.

Kia - Sonet losing the C-SUV battle slowly? Carnival is having a carnival - deserved despite being older generation in India.

Mahindra - It's a push-pull in volumes of Scorpio and Thar every month. They need to devise a plan to remove this capacity constraint.
- Are Bolero Neo volumes clubbed with Bolero?
- XUV family is getting stronger!

Maruti - Nothing new

MG - Astor volumes will push it slightly ahead in the ranks.

Nissan - one word: Magnite!

Renault - does well with the available products - Kiger, Triber and Kwid (losing shine).

Skoda - 2.0 in lot of trouble, they need to solve the issues.

Tata - A hero in the making, impressive gain in market share and launching bumper products continuously.

Toyota - Need to be Belta(ed)

VW - Taigun is not their savior afterall.

Skoda Karoq had 17 manufacturer dispatches for Oct. Thought Karoqs aren't available in any dealerships.

Re: October 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Tough to analyze in a supply constrained environment such as now, but some key trends-

1. Punch packs a solid punch, no pun intended. But from which cars are they gaining these 8000+ units? Hard to make out in a chip shortage affected month, but some definitely from stablemate Taigo, though not Nexon. Also Kwid? And the Maruti hatches- Ignis, top end S-Presso? Even the Swift? Volumes for all these models are still lower than what it was 2 months ago. Impact not yet felt on the entry level SUVs- Kiger, Magnite.

2. New Celerio dispatches have already begun it seems

3. i20 sales are still down despite the N Line launch.

4. Ertiga + XL6 sales cross 17k! I see a lot of the facelift Ertigas on the road now.

5. Superb still outsells Octavia- shows what kind of a gaffe the latter’s pricing was

6. Polo sales dwindling. Is the NLine affecting it? But i20 sales also has been depressed this month

7. Carnival sales are stabilizing at 400 per month, even after removal/reduction of incentives I guess. Very low numbers for a stupendously capable car. Concerns over ground clearance and maintenance in addition to price and that a replacement model is round the corner are holding it back i guess.

8. Given the time at hand, I would have thought Mahindra would have been able to ship more than the 3400 odd XUV700s. this is really bad planning at their end.

9. MG numbers do not include Astor?

10. I expect Safari, Hector and Alcazar to be most impacted due to XUV700. The Jeep Compass- not so much. The 2021 facelift has been able to set itself up as a premium product, and consistently doing 2-3X volumes as compared to 2020 Note though these volumes are lower than the highs in 2017, but given the upwards price movement and increased competition, that drop in volume was expected.

11. Datsun and Citroen- both are at two different ends of the spectrum, but both may be having existential crises

12. Minor blip in Creta numbers or XUV700 effect showing? Or its chips? If it is, why is Hyundai not prioritizing deliveries of its biggest hit?

13. Fortuner has 85% of the BOF SUV segment despite it being 15-20% more expensive than competitors How long will these big diesels sell though? This segment exist? Will the Jeep Meridian and the Skoda Kodiaq make any impact on Fortuner’s standing?

14. Too early to pass judgement on Kushaq and Taigun, but frankly i expected more. I guess even VW and Skoda expected them to make more of a splash.

Guess this is not the right month to analyze with most of the manufacturers being impacted by chip shortage.
On specifically Polo, there is another thread in team bhp where Polo not being available with the dealers and not accepting the booking.

Re: October 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Tata Punch did start with a Punch! That's great start for a brand new launch. Hope the overall service from Tata also improves at the same pace! Rooting for Tata. Hope they bring in Altroz and Punch EV asap. That will be awesome.

Magnite is doing a good job for Nissan. They should add a couple of more cars to keep the momentum.

The void which the Crysta made while upgrading from Innova was not cashed in by the Marrazzo. And all other available MPVs died off, and then second iteration of Ertiga was better looking and closer to SUV's front than an MPV look. Which I think was a major turning point for MSIL's Ertiga success.

Re: October 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I am surprised at the '230' Kicks that Nissan manufactured. I could not get my hands on one last month. Nissan allocation itself is a mystery. I thought Duster production was stopped. How did they manage to allocate 750+ Dusters?
