Questions:-

1. Why would you renew 22 BH vehicle in 23 itself, one year in advance. Any particular reason ?

2. Is there no requirement to submit any docs as proof of eligibility ?

1. Wasn't sure if government would change the rules and introduce any new step for renewal of BH series. So when the window opened, I extended the registration without waiting for it to be due.

2. For now, there is no document requirement. Just complete the payment and you will get the receipt as well as the revised tax due date.

Query - Your tax wasn't due until 2024 but the system allowed you to pay in advance ? Also, did it display the amount to be paid or you had to enter it manually? Was it same as what you paid the first time?
System auto populated the tax amount. There was no manual entry required. Amount is same as what was paid during the purchase.

@dzired, thanks for providing the renewal information. I really like it when things happen online (read- without having to deal with or even worse bribe any rude public "servant" )

What is the validity date mentioned on RC card, does it cover full 15 years? Do we have to keep a separate proof of road tax paid and it's validity? Have you encountered traffic police asking for or insisting on the latter in your experience so far?

That's sad! I would have expected at least RTO folks to calculate and charge you for the right amount. What amount dealers collects should not matter that much as long as they refund excess amount after registration. The correct amount is- applicable BH tax rate calculated on ex-factory price (ex-showroom - GST/cess) and multiplied by 1.25. Effectively, it is equivalent to applying BH tax rate to ex-showroom price with 25% GST+cess (though in reality it is higher depending upon the state, class of vehicle)

Is there no field seeking details of the current state where you / your workplace and the vehicle are now based?

If so, the logic of the 2 year tax being passed to the State where the vehicle is transferred does not hold.

Also, having paid up the Tax in advance, say you change jobs to a company in another State that does not have it's offices in 4 States, then what happens?

RC mentions the Registered Upto as 2037. So it covers the full 15 years. I have taken a print out of the tax payment and the updated tax validation date from the parivahan portal. Will carry these along during longer trips.

As far as police asking for the tax proof is concerned, I have driven more than 20,000 kms in 18 months, including pretty long journeys like Jaipur to Bangalore, Bangalore to Rameswaram, Bangalore to Goa, etc. I have never been stopped by a cop to enquire anything related to BH series.

Thank you for this! I was able to pay the road tax for our BH registered XUV as well. It is immediately reflected on the mParivahan app as well that the road tax has been paid till 2026.

Begs the question though - does this mean repeat validation won't be necessary each time one needs to pay Road Tax? That would be one heck of a boon.

During my BH registration, I had to pay on the exshowroom price. I thought things would have changed in 1.5 yrs and dealers would have the requisite knowledge on BH registrations. Does not seem the case. Confusion still prevails even after 3 yrs of BH roll out.
In most cases, they refund the difference after getting the registration done. I registered my vehicle in Delhi, dealer collected road tax from me on ex-showroom price, we agreed on fix commission of Rs 1500, the actual road tax was on the dealer invoice price, dealer refunded the difference after deducting the commission.

If anybody else has tried doing this anywhere else, please share your experience and the process. There is too much confusion and no clarity given by anybody.
Hey ! , I believe you were in the process of selling your BH registered Safari, were you able to figure out how to do so or did you have any luck with it?

I did ask some folks around in Pune RTO but they were clueless on it.

A recent update. A few dealers in Pune who are charging the road tax based on the invoice value and not on the ex-showroom price are getting notices from Pune RTO for the payment of the differential amount. The same is being passed on to the customers I am told.

Can someone from Pune who recently opted for BH registration confirm this please?

Is there an option to pay for more than 2 years? i.e 4 years or 6 years?

No, there is no option to pay for 4 or 6 years, the only option one gets on the portal is Lumpsum 2 years.

In any case this is like pay and use, so there is no point in paying in advance.

@dZired - What mode of payment did you use to pay the tax? What options are available. Asking coz in another couple of months I will need to pay the next 2 yrs slab tax.

The option does not exist. But there is a workaround.

My road tax was initially paid till 2024. I paid last night and it was extended to 2026. I checked just now and I can see I can pay again for 2026-2028. So looks like one can pay for whatever duration they wish to.

I use the SBI ePay payment gateway and I could pay using my credit card. There were other options like debit card and internet banking available as well.

I am told to pay 50k for BH series. Said difference will be refunded. I don't think 50k is either on ex-showroom minus gst or including gst.

Which car are you buying?

I calculated my BH series road tax using this link, and it was pretty accurate, I had to pay 4000 extra for municipality charges which is specific to Delhi.

This is great information, thanks for sharing!

I tried for my vehicle, and it does show tax details like you have mentioned. If we can pay tax online without having to prove that we are BH worthy every 2 years, then it's kind of a Eureka moment. I hope it stays this simple when I am due for my tax payment.

I was planning to convert my plates from BH to MH if there is a demand every 2 years for fresh BH specific documentation like the Form-60.
