Your car price includes 28% GST

price other than GST = 21 10 900 / 1.28 = 16 49 140.625
Rounded up to next number = 16 49 141

tax band for petrol -> 10%
tax band for diesel -> 12%

BH premium -> 25% on top of base tax

Equivalent tax for 15 years 12.5% for Petrol and 15% for Diesel
Road Tax for 2 years
~27 485.6833 for petrol 32 982.82 for Diesel
Round up to next number for the road tax component during registration.

Add additional charges for HSRP, RC and other things, this is your expense on registration.

I think Cess of 22% (in addition to GST of 28%) needs to be taken off from Ex-showroom price.

2,110,900/1.50 = 1,407,267

This should be the base amount for Road Tax calculation.

I think the calculations are bit wrong.

Irrespective of the GST, the Road tax for BH registration only takes the ex showroom price. For petrol cars > 20L the tax rate applicable is 12%. if diesel add additional 2% which makes 14% for the road tax calculations on the ex showroom cost.
2110900 * 14%= 295526
2 yrs calculation= (295526 *1.25*2)/15 = 49254

I didn't realize that,

Now I read it as, ex-showroom price to decide the tax band and calculation to be done based on price excluding GST.

For some vehicles this may change numbers, for some the tax band may still be the same. [word of caution for everyone out there]

Thanks for the correction

Re: New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another

Hi,

A few queries regarding the BH series registration

- If I take a BH series registered car in one state, pay road tax for 2 years in the same state and have to move to a different state within the two years...... Can I drive the car in State 2 without paying the road tax for the second state.
- What is the process for paying the 2 year road tax each time ? Does the car have to be taken to the RTO for the same or can this be paid online ?
- If I take a BH series registered car now and there are some consequent changes in the road tax slabs in future - is there a possibility of a financial impact on future road tax payments ?

Grateful if fellow BHP'ians can help with the same

Cheers,

Sid

So i am glad to know that i aint the only one confused. Apparently the RTO in Ahmedabad is confused too, they are not really sure if they are issuing BH series number plates or not.

Trying to answer with whatever information I have known or collected during the process of BH registration of my car.

Yes, you can drive to the other state without paying road tax for that state. All you will need to do is pay the road tax every 2 yrs online on the parivahan website ( or any alternate means available).

Pay online the road tax. No need for the RTO visit for vehicle inspection

Road tax is calculated on the vehicle ex showroom price mentioned in the invoice. It is not yet clear whether the current ex showroom price would be considered or the already invoiced price. I think it will be mostly the latter.

I cannot guarantee the above replies will be 100% correct, so better to take help of the RTO person/dealer for the final answers.

Re: New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another

Thanks Ghodlur.... this was most helpful,

I checked with my dealer in Chandigarh, as per him the Road tax is computed at 8% of the pre tax value of the car and not the ex showroom price. With taxes at almost 48% for cars in the > 20 lakhs price bracket it works out to be 8% on 52% of the ex showroom price.

I checked out the maths and it more or less ties in with the price break up of the car ORP.

Does this mean that the road tax on the BH series car in Chandigarh would be ~ 100% higher as compared to the normal number plate? Asking bcoz I remember reading that the slab applicable would be 12% plus a 25% premium. Or is there a different slab for places like Chandigarh?

Anyone who has picked up a BH series car from Chandigarh should be able to help with this.

Thanks in advance,

Cheers,
Sid

As updated by Waseem Memon in Facebook group Drive Without Borders, writ petition is filed in the Karnataka high court due to exclusion of private organization employees in BH registration.

Most of the people have misunderstood the wordings of the notification. It is clear from the notification that tax bracket as well as tax calculation is to be done based on Invoice price (excluding the GST). No other component is excluded else the notification would have mentioned ex-factory price and not Invoice price minus GST.

New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another-bh-tax-calculation.jpg

If tax bracket to be interpreted as the invoice price including GST then tax amount should also been interpreted as % of that invoice amount as the above table simply mentions Invoice value, but in the preceding para of notification clarifies that invoice value means amount excluding GST.
So to calculate tax for BH series the calculation is simple and is as follows (please don't use any online tools like mycarhelpline etc. as everyone is calculating it incorrectly.)

BH Series road tax for 2 years = Ex-factory price x (compensation cess factor if any, like 20% for SUVs which means 1.20) x 1.25 x 0.1 x 2 / 15

Why am I taking Ex-factory price? Because this is the price at which 28% GST is levied and compensation cess (like 20% for SUVs). See the below invoice screen-shot

New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another-example.jpg

So in the above case the tax would be
Road tax = 12,15,541 x 1.2 x 1.25 x 0.1 x 2 / 15 = 24,310/-

Re: New "BH" series registration | For cars getting transferred from one state to another

Hi All,
I'm not sure if this question was asked earlier in this thread.
Mods... Please delete my post if it seems redundant to you.

If I purchase a car in Karnataka, can I take it to Pune and get the BH registration done in the Pune RTO?
If yes, does anyone from Pune know a reliable RTO agent wjo can help me with the process?

I'm pretty sure this should be allowed, but ground level realities maybe different. So, if anyone has done something similar, please tell us about the process and its challenges.

Not sure if I got your point here,

If the objective is to get a BH registered car in Pune, why would you buy the car from Karnataka and then take it to Pune for the registration ? Unless you are talking about paying the subsequent road tax after the initial 2 years.

The dealership where you buy the car from will not allow you to take the car out of the showroom unless it is registered - one way out is a temporary registration.

I stay in Karnataka and the BH registration rules here don't allow a private employee to register for it.
Pune(MH) allows private employees with form 60 to register for BH. I have genuine need for BH because I expect to change my work location from B'lore to Pune or Hyderabad this year.
I'm buying the car in Karnataka rather than Pune because the showroom is just 10 mins away from my house and the dealer agreed to let me go to a different state for my registration. He probably meant the temporary registration that you mentioned.

I get your point but I think it will be a lot easier to buy the car from a dealer in Pune even if you have to do it remotely,

You may have to keep a few things in mind
- Will you able to insure a car with a Temp registration ? If not the insurance will have to wait till your car is registered in Pune
- You will have to drive the car all the way from Bangalore to Pune and back - car will have to go to the RTO for the registration (Car may not be insured during this journey)
