It was my first and last experience with an AMT

The Ignis was my second car, I have a 2010 Civic V AT as well. Don’t need another car at the moment, so no replacement.

Cheers

Re: 2022 Maruti-Suzuki Baleno, now launched at Rs. 6.35 lakh

Great pricing by Maruti.

Exterior doesn't really look much different to me but the interior looks nice and great set of features, specially 360 degree cam, 6 airbags etc do matter a lot. Sad to see the CVT go. Personally don't have much experience with AMTs expect a couple of test drives on Nexon Petrol AMT which wasn't really very pleasant(infact AMT was the reason to drop Nexon, otherwise loved the car). Due to this went with CVT and I find is really smooth to operate in city. But for general market CVT/AMT/TC/DCT doesn't really make much of a difference, so Maruti actually has done fine by cutting costs where majority wouldn't bother. Personally I would never get an AMT but then that's just me & a handful BHPians maybe.

However, while they stress about improved safety why not go the whole hog getting it tested by GNCAP and get that coveted 4/5 star along with 'stable bodyshell' rating? Although that's not exactly a make or break point in buying decisions among Indians but does help as is visible with TATA's latest success.

This would be a good pick over the Swift for sure.

And one observation from the presentation - it should be read as “Baleno sold every 3 mins and not seconds” isn’t it? can’t help, but notice!

Guess [# of customers lost by removing the CVT] << [# of customers gained by adding the AMT]. #MarutiEconomics

Economies of scale with AMTs are far more attractive than the offering only 1 CVT powered car model in the whole lineup.

Re: 2022 Maruti-Suzuki Baleno, now launched at Rs. 6.35 lakh

An AMT has no business being in a premium hatchback. It is astounding that Maruti decided not to use their upcoming 6-speed AT which will soon launch in the Ertiga/XL6 and Brezza.
The buyers in this segment who want an automatic will gladly pay the 1 lakh premium for the convenience and refinement.

In my humble opinion, the whole Arena and Nexa model has now become a joke. The models are similarly equipped and I struggle to see any real differentiation. Maruti continues to shoot itself in the foot by giving themselves no opportunity to move upstream.

People are buying 25 lakh Tatas, Mahindras, Hyundais, and Kias these days and Maruti is still scraping wafer thin margins. Sure, that's what Arena is for! But Nexa really should have been about creating something more desirable and luxurious.

Instead we get an AMT equipped Baleno. Utter stupidity!

Agreed. We on TeamBHP are a focused group of auto enthusiasts, who look at vehicles from a special interest. We are also a very small minority of people buying vehicles.

The vast majority are looking at purchasing costs, running costs and maintenance costs as their primary motivation to buy a car, along with creature comforts and safety features slowly gaining ground, and only third is driving dynamics and improvements of CVT over AMT, which is often looked at through a cost benefit analysis. The pricing ensures that AMT is preferred, especially in the hatchbacks, as the cost differential of a CVT is too high to digest.

Off topic, Same argument can be made for why Tata hasn't bothered to bring in an AWD 4x4 Harrier/Safari.

All companies spend quite a lot of money on marketing and market surveys, so they know what the average customer wants. This is proved by the continued high sales of 4x2 Harriers/Safaris and AMT Balenos despite complaints elsewhere on this forum regarding the lack of a 4x4 by Tata or the CVT Baleno in this very thread...

Re: 2022 Maruti-Suzuki Baleno, now launched at Rs. 6.35 lakh

Good pricing and great features. The already good Baleno is now even more attractive for a buyer who prefers manual shifter. In 2023 I was thinking of upgrading a hatch for my better half but look Baleno is definitely out of contention due to AMT. However they refine it AMT is just too jerky. The CVT has a pronounced rubber band effect when the pedal is slightly pressed hard. But I thought we can live with the CVT since it is a superior gearbox than AMT.

Baleno will continue to sell well and will not be a surprise if it crosses the 3 million units sales in the next 4 years. I am sure Maruti will use its push marketing strategy to accomplish this.

I don't like the unnecessary kink on the headlamp on this Baleno. Same with that on WagonR. But they have done it nicely on the Stingray.

According to Sirish Chandran the new Baleno is a step up in the way it drives, and he also liked the AMT.
