Re: Maruti dealer fined Rs. 1 lakh for disconnecting odometer of new car

It's a common practice AFAIK. Usually, when certain trim/variant is not available, dealers get the cars from neighbouring dealers if they happen to have it. The customer would be intimated about it and usually it's done with customer's approval. In some new cars, the odo can be reset upto certain kms, like upto 250kms. But if this was done for test drive or dealer/personal use, it's not a good practice.
But, with so many modern tech, how is it possible to use a car properly with odo disconnected? Like, speedometer gets data from abs unit. If ECU does not receive speed data at all, won't the engine go into limp mode? Any ideas on this?

I recently took delivery of my RE interceptor 650. On the way home i realised speedo was not working. Came home and checked and realized its just a wire which needs to inserted into a socket. Nothing fancy. The wire was not disconnected it was only inverted so that it doesnt sense the speed. Took the wire out, inverted it and reconnected. Worked like a charm.

Practice is very common across the industry. So dint even bother to ask the dealer why he did it.

A commendable job to catch the culprit. But, is there any mention of HOW did they come across this particular vehicle having the tampered odo?

Also, for a non-suspecting buyer, wonder how can anyone detect such a scam for new cars?

For used cars, there are some obvious checks & balances that one can do.

Re: Maruti dealer fined Rs. 1 lakh for disconnecting odometer of new car

Could be named as the oldest profession for car sellers, I believe ! Thanks to the vigilance by the concerned activist citizen, who detected the fraud by the dealer who it appears could be a habitual offender, who has been caught and exposed for his misdeed when his luck ran out.

Maruti needs to blacklist such dealers who earn a bad reputation for the brand with their nefarious activities. After a thorough enquiry, giving the dealer a chance to present his defence, Maruti would do well by terminating the dealership of such a delinquent dealer.

As per the July 2020 amendment to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 temporary registration plates are banned and cannot be displayed on motor vehicles in lieu of the registration plates (HSRP). Mainly, as these are not readable by the number plate reading devices in CCTV cameras installed by law enforcing agencies.

Quote:

Driving a car with a paper-printed temporary registration number has been made an offence by the Union Ministry of Road Transport Highways (MoRTH). The new rule is consequent on the revision of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules to curb fraudulent activities.

At present, vehicles sporting such paper-printed temporary registration numbers ply the road for weeks. Many who reserve fancy numbers drive vehicles sporting these temporary registrations till the auction is completed.

Law-enforcing agencies’ cameras equipped with number plate reading facility find it difficult to read them. The numbers, written on paper, are not clear and the paper can be easily removed in case the vehicle is involved in a crime.

Hope MS should pass the fine money to the consumer who got the car.

The vehicle was caught and fined by MVD, not the company.

If the customer is being made aware of the disconnected odo then why even bother with it?
Why can't they just keep the odo running and deliver it to the customer?

Re: Maruti dealer fined Rs. 1 lakh for disconnecting odometer of new car

My friend booked a Maruti Dzire from Kannur (Indus) last year and the Dealer brought the car from Trivandrum by driving 460+ kilometers. He came to know this from Sales staff and was hesitant to accept the car. Finally they offered some freebies and he took the delivery.

Looks like they found the easiest way is disconnecting the Odo than answering questions from Customer.
