With fuel prices on the rise, alternate fuels such as CNG are likely to gain popularity. Maruti Suzuki is expanding its CNG range, while Tata Motors is also likely to introduce factory-fitted CNG options for some of its models. Skoda, however, has no plans to launch a CNG version of its midsize sedan, the Rapid.



Zac Hollis, Director of Skoda Auto India, has confirmed that the company does not plan to launch the Rapid CNG in India. He added that future model plans are being continually reviewed, but there are no confirmed plans for CNG-powered vehicles.

Moreover, Skoda was testing the CNG version of the Rapid at one time, but seems to have decided to scrap that project and is probably focusing on its new mid-size sedan.

The new model is based on the MQB A0-IN platform and is slightly larger than the Rapid. It is likely to be offered with the same engine options as the Kushaq.

Valid point. Zac had a totally different answer to the same question a few months back. Good decision IMHO!

Flogging a decade old Rapid with a CNG variant is not the answer for missing out on diesel options in your portfolio! It is time for the Slavia and it should replace the Rapid, even if at a higher price point.

Skoda had an elegant CNG solution with multiple small tanks strategically placed under the car and in place of the regular petrol tank. The overall gas capacity is higher and boot space remains unaffected. This is totally different from the jugaad implementation Maruti/Hyundai offer with the ubiquitous big tank in the boot, no different from your local aftermarket installer. Skoda’s disinterest is India’s loss. Such a CNG vehicle could have revolutionised the entire CNG market in India.

Yes, that's what I loved about the implementation. Sadly, they are still unsure for Indian market.

Larger CNG tanks ensure excellent range

The all-new ŠKODA OCTAVIA G-TEC due to be launched in the second half of 2020 has a 1.5-litre four-cylinder TSI engine delivering 96 kW (130 PS), which enables sprightly performance. Its three CNG tanks have a joint capacity of 17.33 kilograms, allowing for a range of up to 480 kilometres in CNG mode. The 1.0-litre TSI in the SCALA G-TEC and the KAMIQ G-TEC produces an output of 66 kW (90 PS). In both models, the three CNG tanks have a capacity of 13.8 kilograms – equivalent to a CNG-only range of around 410 kilometres in the SCALA and KAMIQ.

Meanwhile, additional 9-litre petrol tanks safeguard mobility in regions without CNG filling stations.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't CNG non suitable for a turbocharged engine? As far as I know the Rapid only comes with a 1.0 TSI which I believe would be difficult to pair to a CNG and would require significant investments for the changes.
