At the cost of repeating myself, who would these cars be targeted at? I see most of the luxury car owners to have massive inherited wealth or are from typical old-world Indian business families. Their priorities might be to own a marquee brand.
India didn't have a strong salaried upper middle class population to sustain the likes of Genesis or Acura. That seems to be changing now. A lot of salaried middle class people end up with Fortuners/Endeavours. Though they can buy an entry level luxury sedan, they still value the practicality of the big SUVs. If priced right (just north of the CRV/Tuscon range), a Genesis SUV might find takers. The G80 sedan, I am not sure. Something equivalent to the Acura TSX in terms of price and size might sell.

Some of the folks already know/follow Doug DeMuro.
In his recent review of GV70 he is head over heels for the interiors and overall value (in the USA market) it provides over similar luxury CSUVs. Really, the interior is something else, absolutely top notch quality wise and just so good looking.
Let us hope they manage to spin the brand as proper luxury and not just expensive Hyundai. 70 and 80 could be great cars for our landscape.

Genesis would be a great option in luxury segment. I believe they would provide great value for money against their German rivals and might go Audi way of discounting. People love to get deal on products with high perceived value. But again India is a complex market to crack and only time would tell how they fare.

I spotted Genesis G80 on 28th August 2021 while I was driving in Gurgaon on Delhi-Jaipur Expressway. The car looks stunning from every angle. All the people noticed the car and it was an absolute head turner.
I tried my best to take picture of the car from front but I was alone and driving so picture is not very clear but it gives an idea.

Genesis GV80 luxury SUV spotted in India

The Genesis GV80 has been spotted in India once again. The luxury SUV was recently seen on the streets of Chennai, leading to speculations that Hyundai could be planning to launch it in the Indian market.



Genesis is a subsidiary of Hyundai that offers premium products, similar to what Lexus is to Toyota. The GV80 is its flagship SUV. It was first seen alongside the G80 sedan at the inauguration of the new Hyundai India headquarters in Gurgaon.

The GV80 is based on Hyundai’s M3 platform and features a rather bold-looking exterior. It has an almost Bentley Bentayga-esque design featuring a large chrome grille, stacked LED headlamps and LED tail lights, as well as massive 22-inch alloy wheels.



The interior of the car looks clean and uncluttered with a simple dashboard featuring horizontal air-conditioning vents and a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system up top. The car has a 2-spoke steering wheel and a digital instrument cluster.

In the international market, Genesis offers the GV80 with 2.5-litre and 3.5-litre petrol engines and a 3.0-litre diesel engine option. All three versions are available with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

To me it looks more like the Hyundai's MD GV 80 2.5T which can be easily spotted in Gurgaon near to their corporate office every now & then.

On launching the Genesis brand in India, I keep hearing the second corporate building [adjacent to Hyundai HQ] coming in Gurgaon [Under Rapid Construction] from the Hyundai Motor Group will have all other Hyundai Brands under one roof, be it Mobis, Hyundai Insurance etc. and now may be Genesis as well.

So the above news might be true !!

Genesis GV80 Coupe trademarked in India

Hyundai’s luxury sub-brand, Genesis, has filed a design patent for the GV80 Coupe in India.



The Genesis GV80 Coupe is based on Hyundai’s M3 platform and features a rather bold-looking exterior. It has a large chrome grille, stacked LED headlamps and LED tail lights and rides on massive 22-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the GV80 gets a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster and a 2-spoke steering wheel.

In the international market, Genesis offers the GV80 with 2.5-litre and 3.5-litre turbo-petrol engines and a 3.5-litre unit paired with a 48V electric supercharger.

In India, the Genesis GV80 could rival the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. It is also available in a standard SUV body style.

Knowing Hyundai they are already making plans to launch Genesis in India. Most probably, through a separate, premium sales channel.
This will sell. Loaded to its gills and priced competitively it will definitely give the entry level Germans a run for their money.

Just now saw a G80 sedan in black color near the Pune Airport. Looks really handsome! It was MH12 registered car.

If Genesis is positioned as a premium brand with a premium sales and distribution network and priced to undercut the competition, it should sell well in India. Considering the trademark filing, I think Hyundai has planned for the launch soon. Hopefully they nail it!

Quite excited to see these cars in India.

The jump between the 20-30L segment and the luxury cars (Audi, BMW, Merc) is a great gap for Genesis to fill. The GV80 at a 55-60L price point will surely sell like hot cakes and make the X1 and GLA seem obscenely expensive for what they offer.
