Very clearly the SCI indexed journal is itself a not secure website. In the Digital age, 1st sign of something that should not be taken seriously and should not be even browsed.

Secondly, I happened to check the Contact section and the so called indexed journal just has an email. Nothing else. So much for a reputed journal

Thirdly I checked their sample. They have explicitly mentioned that the same is taken from Thane for 1004 people. That's it. Does that suffice to make an assumption for the entire country?

68% is a botched up number by some wanna website which simply wants to show India in bad light.

Excellent point . Wondering whether anyone would talk about taxing the landlords and the agriculture sector. I know "rich" farmers who own big independent houses and luxury cars and pay no "taxes" at all. If salaried employees have tax brackets and slabs why not follow same slabs for farmers also?

Re: Excise collection on petrol & diesel jumps 88% to Rs 3.35 lakh crore

Hi All,

The discussion on this thread has been informative for me. I am wondering if a poll would be a good idea with these 3 options or variations of them.

What should the government do about high excise petrol/diesel rates?

Option 1 : The government should increase direct income tax collections even if the already heavily taxed salaried folks will bear the brunt of the burden.
Option 2 : The government should increase corporate taxes to 30% even if it causes companies to shut shop , reduce growth plans and move to other countries.
Option 3 : The government should keep the high excise petrol/diesel rates even though it will indirectly hit the poorest of the poor.

Please add other options that may be there.

Which government? There are three Government bodies (Central, State and local) that levy hundreds of taxes grouped into two. (Direct and Indirect). Turning any knob up or down will have huge known and unknown repercussions. At the end of the day they will only mess with the knob that will give them votes.

A poll with 2 Direct tax and one Indirect tax would not cover much. Even if you were to add all that is there, it will not paint a picture. The taxation system is a gnarly beast. The poll would have to be so big, that most people will lose interest very quickly. We are only interested in making others pay taxes. And that is very normal human nature.

Option 4: Remove income tax completely. I'm pretty sure those people hoarding 'black money' will start spending it freely without thinking about any raids from the tax men. The middle class will obviously spend more and the economy will get some kick to get moving. Not to mention the savings that will be made by the govt to find those tax evaders.

I have also another weird suggestion: Give tax breaks to corporates for hiring certain number of people in the 3-10 lakh CTC per annum levels- this will incentivise companies to hire more people instead of keeping it lean which will also help in circulating money in the economy and helping the job crisis today. That or some other policy to incentivise companies to create more jobs and to create/develop new technologies which can bring in more forex.

Currently, it's a pain to run a company here.

Option 4 : Make it easier for companies to do business here, this will attract lot of investments and create job in the organized sector, which in turn will increase the number of tax payers.

Invest money in energy sector, sell electricity/fuel at lower rate, this will give a HUGE boost to the manufacturing sector. High fuel cost will drive people away.

Make effort to cut on unnecessary spending like freebie and other poorly executed socialist ideas.

Create a positive image of entrepreneurs, media portraying rich people as evil and poor people as victims isn't helping anyone. Socialism is the last thing we need when the government wants to earn money.

True that.
I know of a road side eatery which sells breakfast and snacks like crazy. The earnings are fat and I'm pretty confident the guy doesn't pay any form of taxes. I'm sure there are many such establishments in our country which have multiple sources and means to evade taxes or not pay at all.

In our country, if the government has 1 method to collect taxes, citizens find 100 ways to evade them.
And yes I'm a tax payer simply because I'm salaried. Everything is accounted for.
When I joined my first job in 2006, section 80C was revised. It's 2021 now, 15 years later it's the same 1.5 lakhs exemption.

I always wonder when I'm already taxed on my income, why should I pay other TAXES??
Just forget about other taxes which we end up paying whenever we buy a product from a safety Pin to a car. No point talkin'.

Just to remind my fellow tax payers, September 30th is the last date to file and not 31st July.
Need to find my Form 16's, look at them for a moment, feel proud about my contribution to the country's economy in the covid times though I stayed home during lockdown with loss of pay for those months!
Long live the salaried people.
Ciao, Stay Safe.
Oh, this should help as well.

Re: Excise collection on petrol & diesel jumps 88% to Rs 3.35 lakh crore

I find the whole argument, that there is a lot of Tax evasion in the country, but government needs money, so it is okay to tax (or excise!) the hell out of petrol/diesel, very very lame. You dont fix one mistake with another. If tax evasion is a problem, then that is the problem to be fixed and not excise on petrol/diesel.

And I know the defense that follows, that tax evasion cannot be easily fixed, it will take years, but government needs money now to spend on infrastructure of the country, development cannot wait, hence it is okay to tax the hell out of anything. This again is wrong and stupid.

When throwing numbers to justify the hike in fuel prices people forget some basics. You may have lots and lots of roads, but a country develops when people have money to spend. Else the road are going to be of no use. Investment in infra (and other similar investments) should follow a need (like transporting goods, people wanting to travel etc.). A need (or I should say want here) arises when people have money to spend. The way direct and indirect taxation is evolving, it is eating into this ability of common people to spend. You cannot brute force development.
