Re: Car brands that should come to India

Got a feeling that none of the so called brands would make it to our shores, at least in the near future. Over the recent years our market has allured brands to to come over here and test the waters. While some have succeeded other have failed, regardless of their fault or not. Our market is a very unique one with majority of sales coming within a certain price bracket and rules (4 meters/engine capacity etc.)

Also the idea of existing players bringing products offered in their international lineup is also less likely to happen. However I wish they offered better variants related to existing products. For instance how the Polo GTI was offered for a while. Powerful engine options with extra kit from factory.

Re: Car brands that should come to India

Here's what I think-
  • Mazda - Great cars but no local manufacturing will make them expensive. Mazda is generally considered a slightly less expensive alternative to mainstream sporty cars. With CBUs, the USP is gone. Mazda, globally, is not a huge OEM. So I doubt they can start local manufacturing from the get go.
  • Subaru - Their uniqueness has been diluted over the years. It's not the same Subaru as it once was. Barely one model left which appeals to the enthusiasts. And as everyone knows enthusiasts form a very small proportion of the car buying public.
  • Acura - Honda India couldn't manage to sell the Civic or the CR-V. Acura is beyond Honda India's capabilities.
  • Infiniti - Same as above. Beyond Renault India.
  • Genesis - Only brand I am excited about. Hyundai India can do it and should do it.
  • Daihatsu - Toyota is very happy selling overpriced Fortuners. When it wanted mass-market, it went to Maruti to rebrand their cars.

Re: Car brands that should come to India

Exciting. We Definitely Want to be Spoiled with more Cars.

MAZDA:-If brands like JEEP and Citroen are confident of becoming players in the market,I don't see why Mazda cannot enter our market. It has been rated to be as reliable as Toyota,if not better. And unlike Toyota, they have some exciting cars.
SUBARU:-As much as we would like to see Subaru here,we all know that is very less likely to happen. The WRX will be way too expensive and the Forester might be a little boring for the customers.
INFINITY:-Recently,Infinity has started revamping thier lineup.Nissan has become a little aggresive with updating their products and so has Infinity. They just might create their own potential for this market.I do hope they enter.
GENESIS:-They might have the largest potential of all brands listed here. They are already equipped well enough. They have just got to go all guns blazing in the marketing front. Why don't they enter already!
CADILLAC:-Did people just forget about this brand.I still dont understand why they haven't entered our shores yet. They do have the reputation and the fan following here.

Re: Car brands that should come to India

Guess this topic has been discussed many times. Or was it regarding specific models only? Not sure. But still it is exciting to list out stuff we want badly in India.

Mazda- The single brand that I want to come to India, but at the same time has the least possibility to enter the Indian market. Their design language, their interiors, their sheer underdog attitude to stuff that even big companies shy away from. If I could have a wish for a single new manufacturer to enter India. It is

Mazda

.

Subaru- Like them, but won't do well in the Indian market.

Acura & Infiniti- While Acura is trying harder than Infiniti, to be frank both of them have lost their plot.

Genesis- This is one that IMHO, could do well in India. Gorgeous designs, focus on luxury than sporty pretensions, both petrol, hybrids and diesel options.

Daihatsu- If Daihatsu didn't reportedly try to double cross with Maruti, we would be having Maruti-Daihatsu instead of Maruti-Suzuki. With Toyota's tie-up with Maruti, chances of Daihatsu in India is weak. If Toyota wanted, they would have launched the Rush and Avanza in India. Ofcourse, we will be getting a car on a Daihatsu platform soon, but no Daihatsu for India.

Looking at Kia, yes. We can accomodate new players. But then looking at other global companies...

Re: Car brands that should come to India

Mazda – One brand which I like to see in India . Mazda’s motto or core on their product design is to “Celebrate Driving” , their primary focus is always bring more fun to drive cars. I have rented Mazda 6 and Mazda 3 during several long weekend trips, had fantastic driving experience. Had plans to buy Mazda Red Soul Red Crystal CX-5, unfortunately I had to return to India and couldn’t buy the car. Mazda is Japanese, reliable, fun to drive , safe and targeting at entry level luxury. Mazda will be able to position their CX30 / CX3 as competitor for Creta/Seltos with premium praising. Mazda have enough cars in their portfolio to bring it to India. Mazda is a small player in Global scale and not sure whether they have deep pockets to invest in high risk market like India.

Good to see lot Mazda fans in our community .

I’m afraid that brands like Acura , Infiniti and Cadillac doesn’t have enough volume to work with. Our market is not yet matured for multiple Luxury players, may be 10 years down the line Acura can test the waters. Since Acura has Honda lineage, will have enough takers in India.

Re: Car brands that should come to India

Being an owner of a Mazda I don't think they will be able to expand in India lets say how Kia has been able to. They are not able to fetch volumes in US and Canada, they launched Diesel variant of CX-5 and that was a big failure. They project themselves as a premium Japanese manufacturer which with the quality they offer I agree, but majority of the market don't buy that theory.
They are not an aggressive company like Hyundai or Kia, the way they react to market demands is in super slo-mo mode. The naturally aspirated 2.0 motor and 2.5 Turbo motor aren't that efficient. Only way Mazda can capture market in India is if they bring the MX-30 EV and start building the brand around it.

Subaru: Is more of a enthusiast brand and they mainly get numbers from Crosstrek, not sure if people will like that car in India.

Infiniti: The brand is doomed in the West, Nissan is struggling big time and hopefully the new Pick-ups can help the brand a bit revive sales. But no way anyone is lining up in front of the showrooms to buy Infiniti in India.

Acura: Looking how lackluster Honda offerings are in India, forget about Acura. RDX and MDX if priced well can do some numbers, but with taxes they will definitely be priced higher. Also no brand value in India means people will go with BMW or Merc in that category.

If Peugeot makes an entry it might do well, the cars are cool and might work in our market.

Re: Car brands that should come to India

Our market has its peculiarities, twists and also indiosyncracies apart from its conventional and auto maker accustomed traits. Hence, make or model that is successful and also perhaps a top seller in some evolved Western market finds no place in the best sellers list here.

The Honda Accord and the Hyundai Sonata are in the Top Ten and often in the Top Five best selling mid-size sedan list in the US market. The Honda Accord tops the list at times. But look at the dismal sales record of these cars here. The Ford Fiesta hatch and sedan are top selling cars in the U.K. but the record is again dismal here. Its all the same for the Volkswagen Polo that is a much sought after car in its category in Germany and Europe.

And Suzuki cars have made their mark here but in other developed markets, these are not well known. The Suzuki Ignis has though made its way into the Top Ten Hatch list in the UK at # 2 lately.

Hence, any manufacturer entering India needs to offer a market centric product suited to our usage conditions with India specific models. Mass market models can be India specific, whereas luxury cars with the very low volumes cannot be expected with such a tag.

Car makers like Mazda with low volumes as is their forte, Cadillac, Chrysler and Lincoln to cater to the luxury segment again with small volumes and Seat in the mass segment need to all enter the Indian market.

Mitsubishi, Ford and Fiat need to make their presence felt, as it appears that they are companies that are sick.

Re: Car brands that should come to India

While it would be great to have exciting brands in India like Mazda and Alfa Romeo, I can't help but think about the offings from existing brands that sell us average machinery.

Brands like Toyota have a fantastic line-up of cars like the GR Yaris, A90 Supra and a host of other models, but all we get here are re-badged Marutis and overpriced ladder-frame SUVs.

Similarly, Honda has some excellent cars on sale in Japan and EU, but we only get ordinary stuff from them, unfortunately.

This got me thinking - even if we do get to see brands like Mazda, we're only going to get re-badged 3rd-World apologies that pass off as cars. So, I wonder if there is any point in hoping that these brands make it to our shores at all.

On a positive note, Alfa Romeo is definitely a brand I would like to see launched here. I would also like to include Mazda in that small list of brands.

Mazda: Hope they revive their rotary engine before coming to India.
Subaru: Never seen one in real life. But I have seen enough Subarus shine in rally championships to be exited enough to want to drive one.

Re: Car brands that should come to India

The brand which I want in India is Mazda. I recently went on a 800+ kms road trip to Yarmouth (Nova Scotia) in a Mazda 6. Awesome car. My friend owns a Mazda 3 and even after doing 1.25 lakh kms, it’s running like a dream. Before coming to Canada, I was a fan of Civic and Accord. But after driving some Mazdas in last 1.5 years, I’m hell bent towards Mazda. Much more fun to drive, better built and almost as reliable as Honda and Toyota.

Re: Car brands that should come to India

During my stay in Rome last year. One of my colleague used to drive in to office daily in a smart car (https://www.smart.com/int/en/home#973).
Was amazed with the quality, maneuverability and capability of the car.

Daimler had initially planned to launch it in India in 2012, but later the project got shelved. Related news https://economictimes.indiatimes.com...w/12408531.cms.

Definitely it will be launched as premium product with price north of 15lacs, will be tough to justify the price for a compact car unless it has the features to support the premium. If priced correct there will definitely be some chaps who would like to have a compact car from a luxury brand amidst sea of SUV’s running the roost at present including me.

Unfortunately Mazda is doing very bad even in Japan. It is currently one of the worst performing Japanese brands after Honda. Mazda venturing to new markets is very remote.

Smart Car please.
Urban commute has been grossly underestimated and neglected.
With rising Mean age, specially in Tier Two cities, we need cars that can move the elderly with very little effort. A small electric car would perfectly suit our smaller cities

Re: Car brands that should come to India

I would like to see more Chinese EVs come to India.
I don't believe that small cars like Wuling Mini will work in India. We already have E2O and that's nowhere near as popular Wuling mini is in China. However, China has plenty of EVs that I think can work well in India.
For example:
Ora good cat is a cute and pretty cost-effective EV for around 16-20k USD

This small electric van will probably work well with online retailers:

For the luxury segment, there is Li one which is a PHEV with an 890 km range and costs 50k USD:

I would also love to see Nio and Xpeng in India as IMHO, they are the best competitors to Tesla:

Tbh, there are so many interesting Chinese cars that I can't even list them all here. The Chinese car market is probably the most exciting car market right now as there is a lot of experimentation going there. I mean just look at the design language of this car:
