Hi Mohitchalla,
Interesting thread. As a kid, I would drool over the auto magazines and wondered why were those lovely cars not available in India.
Now, I know. I see a lot of takers for the Mazda. But their line-up other than the 3 and the 6, would be too expensive for the Indian consumer. Again, with the taxation laws, it would become very expensive if imported. These modern beauties are laden with electronics making the servicing a difficult thing to do.
As a wish list, I would like to see
Peugeot make a come-back of sorts with their very European styled offerings ( suited for India ).

Not sure about Subaru.
Premium brands (Acura, Infiniti, Genesis) - forget it. India's luxury car market is small and about prestige compared. Lower-end Infinitis and Acuras aren't very impressive for the big bucks they'll charge in India.
If Toyota were serious, Daihatsu should have been introduced in the mid 2000s |
Mazda's have definitely come a long way just in the last few years with their styling and package in general.
Agree about the Subaru's. The AWD is not practical for India and it'll only increase fuel consumption. I don't think they have any offering that will cater to the Indian market trends. As much as I love the Outback, I just don't think it'll work in India.
Have to agree on the other point about Infiniti's, Acuras etc. For the price point ( if they are launched ), would be closer to the German trio, and for the Indian consumer, Luxury is all about Brand. Nothing comes close to a Mercedes or BMW.
Toyota could have easily rebadged the Diahatsu's and sold them in India. We see a lot in the Middle eastern and African markets. Did they miss the bus on this one ?

Cannot agree any more on that point. Other than Hyundai ( KIA ) trying to closely match their international range, I don't see Suzuki, Nissan or Honda coming anywhere close. Wish they had a wider offering for the Indian consumer. Atleast for Suzuki and Nissan, they have an infrastructure in place.

. But I believe in the recent times, the consumer is shifting towards wanting more and looking at the better cars the other brands are offering. But sadly, other than Hyundai ( that is really packaging their line-up very well ), none of the other brands are even making an attempt.
OTOH, I am super excited and thrilled that
TATA and
Mahindra are making some real quality products and have upped their game. Its time for them to keep the momentum going and not plateau out on their present line-up.

The 2021 Genesis models are a stunner, but I not sure if the Indian consumer would want to plonk that kind of money on a brand that has zero recall in India. I believe it'll be too expensive a proposition for Hyundai right now.
We all know what happened to the
Kizashi, don't we.
