June 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: June 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks Aditya for the analysis and data:

Here are some more insights to the June sales/dispatch data:

Auto Industry post lifting up many restrictions and with the pent up demand, does reasonably good in dispatches/sales. The sales shot up by a mammoth 118 percent YoY and 147 percent MoM.

- The market leader Maruti Suzuki gained the most as the dispatches normalized with the entire production back into shape, recorded the highest gain in Market Share and increased a whopping 16.8 percent share in June’21 v/s May’21.

- Hyundai India sales increased 89 percent Y-o-Y and 62 percent M-o-M. Due to Maruti's resurgence, Hyundai's Market Share dropped to 15.9 percent in June 2021 against 24.2 percent in May 2021.

- Tata continues to perform well and its volumes more than doubled in June 2021 v/s June 2020.

- Mahindra regained the fourth rank and sales increased over 109 percent YoY

- Kia India volumes grew just 36 percent in June 2021 over May 2021 and was pushed to the fifth spot in the ranking table.

- Maruti Suzuki’s products help Toyota to overtake the likes of Renault, Ford and Honda to place itself in the sixth spot. Glanza & Urban Cruiser contributed to over 58% of Toyota India's volumes in June 2021.

- VW, FCA & Skoda ranked 12th, 13th and 14th respectively. With the Kushaq launched, Skoda is expecting to jump in the ranking table and also leverage on the Mid SUV. Next few (6) months should fairly proclaim the success or failure of Kushaq.

Highlights of Jun-21 dispatch figures:

- Maruti’s WagonR emerged as India's best-selling Car for a repeat performance as last month.

- Only 2 OEMs had their offerings in the Top 10 list – Maruti & Hyundai.

- Top 25 Selling Cars in India for June 2021 - Over 58% of sales came from Maruti Suzuki.

- Maruti’s Vitara Brezza dominates the compact SUV market followed by Tata’s Nexon.

- Hyundai’s Creta is the best seller in the Mid-SUV segment with its sibling Seltos in the second place.

- Sedans have only 1 offering in the Top 25 and was Sub-4m Compact Sedan - Maruti Dzire.

Largest segment (volumes) – Hatchback

- The top 10 models accounted for 50% of June ’21 sales.
- Hatchbacks and SUV’s dominated with 10 models each in the Top 25

Re: June 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Looks like Hyundai is prioritizing Alcazar over Creta given the current production constraints?

But I am interested to see to what extent Alacazar cannibalises Creta/Seltos in the long run instead of taking away share from Safari or Hector. Early days though and Creta still has long waiting periods so hard to conclude.

Re: June 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Ertiga's bumper sales and XL6's not so bumper sales is an indicator - there is a big market for a 3 row affordable crossover SUV. I am not sure who is going to deliver it but if such a vehicle is priced at a slight premium over Ertiga/XL6, it would probably be a big hit.

Alcazar while having a small footprint & economical diesel engine would have been ideal if its starting price was between 15-17L OTR, but Hyundai chose to go the premium route instead, perhaps a missed opportunity.

Re: June 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Great to see auto sales coming back to usual levels, even though a few days would have been lost in June too because of extended lockdowns. Some interesting trends-

1. Ford Endeavour shipments are more than the Fortuner this month. Is this the first time this has happened? Is Fortuner's pricing strategy beginning to finally hurt them?

2. Hyundai's Venue was doing 11k units pre covid 2nd wave, but is struggling to come back up. What is the reason?

3. Renault Triber is yet to come back to it's usual volumes. This vehicle technocally has no competition (7 seat, below 5 lakh urban trundler) but is its baby brother Kiger eating into its sales?

4. The Magnite consistently beating the Kiger despite Renault's wider network. Surprising. Is it the upright looks? Or Rakesh Srivastava?

5. Skoda- well looks like all those who buy Skoda are BHPians only And still the Rapid outsells the Vento fair and square.

6. 3000+ units for Alcazar is a great start. Hyundai and 20 lakh pricing has never clicked, but maybe it will with this one. I did see a couple on the road in Delhi and it did not have any street presence though.

7. Love the consistent 4 figure sales for all the Tata products. When will the management exits start hurting them though?

8. Toyota's borrowed products sell 2X more than its original products. Telling.

9. The Elantra sold 29 units. How much of a difference is the Octavia with its atrocious pricing going to make? Not much i say- probably 75-100 units a month.

10. If Jeep Compass deliveries stabilize at 750-800 units a month, will it count as a win? Note that it was doing ~500 per month before the facelift.

One car which stood out is the Octavia. Seems Skoda has effectively killed the Octavia brand with just 162 cars dispatched in it's inaugural month. Really sad state of affairs and surprisingly the figures for Kushaq are missing too!

Re: June 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Does anyone know the breakdown of Honda City sales with respect to 4th & 5th generation?

I had my heart set at 4th Gen City & Rapid but came to know a couple of days back that Rapid may be discontinued by year end.

So wanted to get an idea from the sales if 4th Gen City is also going to be discontinued in near future.

Re: June 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Strong case for Scorpio selling in 4000+ units on this ancient form, for Mahindra to sell two scorpios side by side to keep minting cash. Mahindra has prepared their own long term money minting machines in terms of scorpio (and Bolero too). With minimal changes, such an old platform beyond its life cycle is selling in such volumes, has recovered every pint of cost involved and beyond! No wonder one day these two models alone can make the entire company debt free.

Scorpio is living by its own tag line, 'Nothing else will do'

Such a massive waiting period for Thar and a mere 1000 odd dispatches?
