Sherp amphibious vehicles spotted in India

Russia-based Sherp is known to build some of the most capable all-terrain vehicles in the world. Now, it seems the company is planning to introduce their products in India.

Sherp has imported two examples of its amphibious vehicle in India. The company posted a video showing the vehicles being loaded onto a trailer.

The Sherp is designed to tackle just about any type of terrain. It measures 3,400 mm in length, 2,520 mm in width and 2,300 mm in height. It has massive tyres and zero overhangs which makes it easier to drive up steep inclines.

The big-fat tyres also give it buoyancy. When travelling on water, the tyres act as a paddle wheel on a ferry boat.

The Sherp is powered by a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, diesel engine that produces 44 BHP. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The vehicle weighs 1,300 kg and is said to have a top speed of 45 km/h. It relies on a skid steering system to change direction.

117 Nm @ 2,000 RPM from that 1.5 litre engine is what helps those massive wheels do its job.

Way cool! But who is the target audience for this?

I didn't know what skid steering means. Or rather I didn't know this kind of steering is called skid steering.

Quote:
In such vehicles, steering is achieved by differentially varying the speeds of the lines of wheels on different sides of the vehicle in order to induce yaw
Tanks have similar turning system.

Yes, correct. Even the power tiller have the same system though the implementation is little crude. It has independent brakes to each wheel. You brake (slow down) one wheel make the tiller turn towards that side.

Absolutely fascinating machines! Can't even recall how many videos of Sherp I have watched on youtube.

Applications can vary from off-road fun, rescue, mining, defence, and so on. The only limiting factor for general public access will be the price. I think they retail for USD100K in the US (not sure)

Here are couple of their official videos

Wow! What the hell did I just watch! This is perfect for our roads be it the craters, stones, floods etc. Why bother building roads when you have one of these I say bring them on and price it competitively. Just don't forget to give it the panoramic sunroof and a huge touchscreen in the center From the pictures and videos it looks like the N1200 as listed on their website. The interior is not bad and has a variety of configurations.

In india it is available for 90 to 125 lakh rs., depending upon the configuration. I had enquired quite recently with them, approx 1 month back.

Most likely for BSF guarding the Rann of Kutch border with Pakistan. Currently, the BSF is using All-terrain vehicles like this:

and patrol boats like this:

Amphibious vehicles like Sherp will improve operational efficiency of BSF patrols, because it combines off-roadability with ability to cross water-logged areas.

During the Galwan Valley clash, Indian Army folks managed to get their Tata Safari Storme to the conflict zone (over large boulders & crossing Galwan river)

The terrain should be much easier to handle in a vehicle like Sherpa.

Re: Sherp amphibious vehicles spotted in India

Possibly useful for NDRF in disaster relief too ... Outside of government agencies and mining industry I cant imagine any civilian uses for this vehicle.

Breathtaking capability! The terrain it covers in those videos is so unforgiving.

It is not afraid of spinning water due to its massive tyres. I wonder what happens if these massive tyres get a flat/sidewall damage in the middle of nowhere?
