Hyundai rolls out 10 millionth car from its Chennai plant

Hyundai achieved a new production milestone as the 10 millionth car rolled out of its manufacturing unit near Chennai.

Hyundai began manufacturing operations in India in September 1998 with the commissioning of Hyundai’s first integrated car manufacturing plant outside Korea. It has an installed annual capacity of 7.5 lakh units.

The Hyundai factory at Sriperumbudur produced its 1 millionth vehicle in 2006, 7 years and 6 months after production first began. The next milestone of 5 million units was achieved in 2013. The jump from 9 million to 10 million units was achieved in just 1 year and 9 months. The 10 millionth car was an Alcazar.

In May 2021, Hyundai achieved its highest ever market share of 24%. The carmaker exported 1,04,342 passenger cars between April 2020 and March 2021. Over 2 lakh units of the Creta and Venue have been shipped to markets like Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Nepal and Chile. The new i20 is also exported to markets across Africa and Latin America.

Numbers aside, the darkened grille suits the Alcazar better. Is this a special edition?

It’s darkened chrome, which is not as shiny as the standard chrome we see. The difference can be seen on the Hyundai logo which is the standard chrome usually used. And the bits on the grill are dark chrome.

The dark chrome is also used liberally on the Toyota Vellfire as well, which looks very different from standard chrome.

From beginning the production of the first car through to the rollout of the milestone 10 millionth car today, Hyundai Motor India has taken all of 273 months or a month under 23 years to do so. The carmaker had rolled out its 9 millionth car in 2019 while the 8 millionth model rolled off the line in 2018.

With the all-new Alcazar SUV now on sale, Hyundai’s next big launch for the Indian market is expected to be its micro-SUV codenamed AX1. The AX1 will go up against the likes of the Tata HBX and has been seen testing on international roads.

Hyundai has also begun testing a facelift for the popular Creta SUV with the updated SUV likely to make its debut in global markets next year.
