Re: New car delivery | What is the max odometer reading you will accept?

My Superb was delivered with ~100 KMs on the odometer. Considering the distance from the stockyard to the dealership and then a round-trip to the service center, it seemed reasonable.

Re: New car delivery | What is the max odometer reading you will accept?

I was allotted a Toyota Yaris with 1Km on the dial but it had travelled from their stockyard 32Km away when asked how can this show only 1Km the answer was its in transport mode.

The dealer forced me for a test drive and then I noticed scratches everywhere turned out they were giving this car for test drives and what not.

Re: New car delivery | What is the max odometer reading you will accept?

Most of the dealer stockyards are outside the city. For Mumbai, most of the car stockyards are in Bhiwandi. And besides this, the dealer is suppose to take a test drive for PDI.
All in all, I think anything below 100 kms. is a fare mileage for Mumbai. Cannot comment for other cities. However as mentioned before, the dealers are authorized to reset the odometer once prior delivery, so you as a customer will never know the exact mileage of your car before delivery.

I am fine with anything as long as the vehicle passes the PDI and there is a proper reason for the odometer reading. My Bolero LX was driven down from Nasik and there was no other option. So by the time I got it, the odometer was showing more than 1900 Kilometers! So I would rather choose the option where the dealer is honest and has not tampered with the odometer just for the satisfaction of the customer.

Re: New car delivery | What is the max odometer reading you will accept?

Depends.
  • For cars that are in the stock yard next to the showroom or nearby, the maximum reading should definitely be below 10 -15 km.
  • However sometimes when we request a specific color or variant which might be available in their branch/yard in the next district, the travelling distance is taken into consideration.
  • If the car is taken to the RTO and delivered with the number plates then that running too is considered.
Anything on the odometer reading not fitting these three criterias should definitely be questioned.

Re: New car delivery | What is the max odometer reading you will accept?

My Figo back in 2009 had 300KM on ODO. I had no issues because car was driven all the way from Mysore. Inspected car and found everything good. With new dealer popping up, RTO moving around, I think upto 100KM is reasonable.

Re: New car delivery | What is the max odometer reading you will accept?

I personally would accept [distance from stockyard to showroom] + 10-12 km. Anything more than that, I'm not gonna be happy with!

There are still manufacturers like Force Motors, who drive their cars from the plant to the showroom. From a Force Gurkha ownership thread from our forum:

Presently the vehicle completed 3300kms. Out of which 2200kms was driven during transport and the rest 1100kms by us.

Re: New car delivery | What is the max odometer reading you will accept?

There can be proper reasoning for high Odo readings but still my psychological barrier is 100km.

In a way having some km on odo is a good thing as it serves as a litmus test wherein major lapses would likely show up.

Re: New car delivery | What is the max odometer reading you will accept?

I got my Altroz with 43 km on the odo.

I saw an YouTube video where a technician does some tricks with the interior controls of the car (stalks, ICE buttons) and the odo was reset to zero. This was done in America. The same could be possible with cars manufactured in India too.

If I find the car having around 100, I would at least be satisfied that the dealer didn't tamper with the odo readings. Also, like somebody mentioned above, odo meters could be disconnected until the car reaches the yard. If it's anything above 150 km, the dealer needs to have an explanation.

My i20 was delivered with 26 km on the ODO. Any reading less than 50 km should be acceptable.

Re: New car delivery | What is the max odometer reading you will accept?

My tolerance limits are on 2 levels for all my new cars.
At the stockyard - not more than 3 km.
From stockyard to showroom - not more than 50.

Anything more and the showroom will have to justify the additional km.

I tend to visit the stock yard before taking delivery and drive down straight to the showroom from there, so I know the approx. distance.

Re: New car delivery | What is the max odometer reading you will accept?

My EcoSport had 6.1kms on the odometer when it arrived from the factory and was unloaded at the dealer showroom. After registration I took delivery of the car with 32.4kms on the odometer. Drive to RTO and back plus car was moved to stock yard for a day due to space constraint in the showroom.

19 years ago, when my dad bought our first new car, a Hyundai Accent, it was driven down from the factory in Sriperumbudur to the TAFE dealer showroom on Mount Road after getting permission from my dad to stick to the promised delivery date. I think we took delivery with a 3 digit Odometer reading. Does not matter to us if there is a valid reason.

Re: New car delivery | What is the max odometer reading you will accept?

On a lot of cars, when we test drove the speedo did not work, because dealerships disconnected it. So the reading does not really mean anything for dealerships who give out customer cars for test drives

Re: New car delivery | What is the max odometer reading you will accept?

Considering that most of the dealers have their stock yards outside of city limits to reduce their overheads, I believe somewhere in the range of 75-100kms should be a good barometer.

I got my Scorpio in 2010 with approx 70kms on the ODO. The dealer yard was somewhere around 30 odd kms and RTO roundtrip trip for registration came to 30kms.

Bottom line if the dealer is transparent upfront for a customer query on the ODO reading, it would ease out many queries. Disconnecting the ODO is a definite no for me.

With advancements in tech, I am pretty sure some OEMs will integrate this data into their smart apps

Re: New car delivery | What is the max odometer reading you will accept?

As long as the number on the odo can be explained satisfactorily, I don't see a problem. Having said that, a low 2 digit would be comforting to me. All my cars till date have had a reading less than 20km on the odo.
