I'm not at a car showroom to impress them or to make them feel good about the clothes I wear, it should be the other way around. Either way before this dressing etiquette discussion, the basic rule in anyone's life should be - treat the other person with respect. May be we should have a thread on that.

My experience recently. The other day I was at a 3M store getting a car wash done, I was in my shorts. There's a VW showroom right next door and I made a visit to check out the Virtus and their other cars. I was greeted by multiple salesmen and their lady manager as well during my 20 min stay there.
I think what that BHPian meant was, dress in shorts as the weather permits, but wear a nice outdoor shorts. More discussion here (post #64). Complimented by a Polo (preferably) and sneakers / clogs. One should look tidy, smell good. Related thread.

Now, it is one's individual choice to wear what one wants, but, my point is, one can look good even in shorts and may look untidy in crumpled formals with unpolished shoes et all. It is all about choices and one can agree to disagree. Let's leave it at that.

Re: 'Dress Code' when visiting car showrooms for a test-drive?

I wore special only when I test drove a Porsche did not do the same for any other car brand. For other office clothes or house clothes work but for Porsche my attire reflected my attitude and yes I did feel like James Bond.

A Porsche Panamera or at least a Macan would be my weapon of choice.

Couldn't agree more. I dress for my own comfort and no one else's. Call me selfish, call me dumb. But I'm not living if I do not feel comfortable in my own skin.

For me, it is simple:
Five times so far, I've walked straight to a dealership and said "I'm here for xx model. Can you please assign a salesman to attend me/my friend".

This has worked 100% of the times; be it a car showroom or else where as it completely takes unimportant stuff out of the equation. I prefer round neck tees and denim when going outside and wore the same for my first car purchase. A not so fancy attire if I may.

Off topic: At my workplace, some folks put up a nohello status. It is to indicate, "Please do not instant message me to say hi and then wait for my response. Get straight to the point and I'll respond". Please do not think it sound "transactional". It does not. In fact it is a very good conversation starter.
