According to a media report, Hyundai will suspend operations at its Chennai unit for a week due to rising Covid-19 cases within the premises.

It is said that workers have been raising their demand to shut down plant operations for five days as Covid-19 cases are on the rise. On Monday, the first shift even refused to work on the shop floor after more than 300 workers had reportedly tested positive and about 7-8 employees had lost their lives over the past few days.

Initially, Hyundai plans to temporarily suspend plant operations for a period of 5 days, between May 25 to May 29, 2021.

The Hyundai plant near Chennai employs close to 2,000 workers. The plant operates in three shifts and has been running at full capacity due to high demand.

What's going on with Renault-Nissan first and now Hyundai? Given they both are in TN and the state is seeing rise in COVID numbers, is the case load among the plant workers higher/lower compared to the immediate neighborhood/district/state? Is it at the same rate as the general populace?

According to the Sutra, Covid India prediction model, the peak has not yet reached in Tamil Nadu. It is suicidal for an organization at this stage to operate at full capacity.

Re: Hyundai India: Workers force plant shutdown

Does anyone know the political affiliations of all the car manufacturers? Who favored them earlier, top management and owner biases, etc etc? Because it seems more like politics than any logical reasoning. It's likely that they are being pressured to buy the equivalent of electoral bonds to be allowed to continue operations.

It's highly unlikely that one company has conditions very different from it's competitors.

Hyundai suspends third shift operations till June 19

Hyundai has suspended its third shift from May 31 till June 19, 2021. The decision was taken in view of the current Covid-19 situation. Third shift operations will resume from June 21.

According to Hyundai, the suspended third shift operations will be treated as 50% paid holidays and 50% compensatory holidays. The employees would therefore have to compensate for 9 shifts.

The company resumed plant operations in two shifts from May 31 following a week-long shut down due to rising Covid-19 cases.
The state of Tamil Nadu has seen a spike in Covid-19 cases over the last few weeks. In the wake of this, other manufactures like Ford, Renault-Nissan and Yamaha had also suspended operations at their factories.
