Mahindra XUV500 to return as new Creta rival in early 2024

Mahindra XUV500 to return as new Creta rival in early 2024

-All-new midsize SUV – codenamed S301 – will have five seats and sit between the XUV300 and XUV700.
-Will get revised 1.5L diesel of the XUV300 and a new 1.5L M-Stallion turbo petrol.
-Will be based on extended platform of the XUV300.
-Will be 4.2-4.3m in length, going head-on for the Seltos and Creta.

Quote:
However, we’ve now learned that, though it will be smaller than the current XUV500, the rebranding is intended to give it a more upmarket positioning.
Quote:
The S301 was meant to be co-developed alongside a sister SUV from Ford, and in fact was all set to use the Blue Oval’s B772 platform. However, as the JV and powertrain agreement with Ford came to an abrupt end earlier this year, Mahindra has had to go back to the drawing board for the underpinnings of the S301. It is also the reason we won’t be seeing the new XUV500, which will fill a critical gap in Mahindra’s model range, before early 2024.
Quote:
The S301 is likely to be powered by a revised version of the XUV300’s 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is future-proofed to meet the tighter BS6 phase II emission standards that come into effect in 2023. It will also get an all 1.5-litre turbo-petrol from the mStallion family, developing around 160hp. The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, which was unveiled at the 2020 Auto Expo was expected to make its debut in the Marazzo petrol but with Mahindra focussing only on SUVs, the company’s MPV plans have been put on the back burner.

Now this is fun. Maruti, Tata, Mahindra, Skoda VW will all enter the Creta segment before 2024! I am a previous gen Creta owner and was looking for a replacement. But sadly, there's nothing available for me in the same segment except the new Creta as there is no Kia/VW dealership here. And quiet frankly, I hate the design of the new Creta. Enough to be a deal breaker for me.

With the new competitors the segment will definitely grow even more. Creta-Seltos are already doing around 30k units a month with waiting periods going upto 9 months!

Makes sense. If you observe the spy pics of the XUV700, it doesn't appear significantly bigger than the current XUV500. So I feel the new XUV500, whenever it comes will come, with a price tag undercutting the Korean twins.

While the XUV700 will aim to undercut Safari.
The current XUV500 W11(O) AT retails at 24 L OTR, before discounts. While the Safari XZA+ Adeventure is available at 26.43 L. I believe Mahindra could launch the new XUV700 top model at around 26L, to undercut the Safari. Else the price gap between the MG Hector+ (23.63L) and XUV 700 would turn out to be significantly large.

PS- All Pune OTR prices, from Cardekho

What's Tata developing for this segment?

I find it ironic that M&M bought SsangYong, butchered the Tivoli from 4.2 metres to sub-4 metre, 'Mahindrafied' it, called it the XUV 300, overpriced, and ultimately struggled to sell it. Meanwhile, SsangYong introduces the Tivoli XLV /Air at 4.4 Metres, way back in 2016.

Why couldn't they simply use the Tivoli Air as the XUV 300 and launch it as the Creta competition? In what world does a sub-4 metre make more money than the 4.2/4.3 metre segment?

They could then refresh the XUV 500 add 2 seats and call it 700, and introduce the Rexton as the 900.

Much as I hate the 'Double 0' nomenclature, this order would at least make sense.

Bit disappointed that M&M is downgrading the brand XUV500.

Generally other manufacturers do the opposite as their cars grow bigger & premium over generations.

However, it will be interesting to see how do they put up a fight in Creta segment as compared to Hector-Harrier competition.

The XUV 300 sells about 3 thousand-ish units every month, which is good enough.
Last month it did 4400.

Possible. As the Autocar report also mentions that this was to be developed under Ford-Mahindra JV. Now that they are no longer working together, it is likely that Mahindra will start everything from scratch, including the design.

2024 - seems like a rumor. They certainly won't be developing an all new product or an all new platform. They just need to take the Tivoli, make some changes (re-skin it) and bring it in. I suspect that would happen much earlier.

Re: Mahindra XUV500 to return as new Creta rival in early 2024

I really hope the new one doesn’t turn out to be an extended form of the XUV300, Tivoli in no sense has the imposing butch stance of current XUV500. I remember sometime during the auto expo last couple of years back, it was being speculated that the new XUV500 will be based on Ssangyong Korando which is sold globally as a 5 seater suv. Hope Mahindra doesn’t screws up an icon.

Re: Mahindra XUV500 to return as new Creta rival in early 2024

2024 seems to be on the far end off the spectrum. Given how dynamically the world is changing every day, who knows which way the market would be swinging by 2024.

If Mahindra want to genuinely milk a cow in the race, they need a vision to bring something by maximum 2022.

While I see your point, Mahindra has a lot going on already: XUV700, new scorpio, new tuv300 amd tuv300 plus. They need to see some returns and get some financial stability before they invest on something new. They clearly have prioritized other launches before this.

Re: Mahindra XUV500 to return as new Creta rival in early 2024

Oh man, the breakup with Ford seems to have royally screwed up their plans.

They want to market the ‘new’ 500 as a stretched 300, 4.2-4.3m? Guess what.... that the original international spec Tivoli to begin with! They had shortened it, chopped off the boot to get it under 4m, put in appropriately sized engines and had christened it the 300.

Basically, we will get a thoroughly refreshed 300 with a proper boot and perhaps a new cabin, with a new petrol engine. Wonder why it will take them 3 years to implement this? Perhaps Pratap Bose needs this much time to work his magic.

Re: Mahindra XUV500 to return as new Creta rival in early 2024

All fine and good.
However, I just don't understand, why this should take 4 years to arrive?

An "existing" product (Tivoli) was chopped off and it resulted in the XUV300.
Hence, it should be much quicker to launch the "existing" product (aka 4.2m Tivoli).

The powertrain, localization etc. is already in place (as part of the xuv300).
