Since it was a "lateral upgrade", I could sell off the dicor for 6 lakhs and buy the Storme again for some 15 odd lakhs. Used the Storme for 3 years (50000 kms) and sold it off to the Tata dealer again for 7 odd lakhs and bought a Hexa xta for some 22 odd lakhs on road.
Used the Hexa for about 3 years putting in 30000 odd kms and upgraded to a landrover discovery sport in 2019. The Hexa was bought by the dealer again for some 12 odd lakhs and with a 10 lakh straight discount on the Discovery Sport, I actually used the Hexa for free for 3 years!
In short, by staying within the Tata family and by upgrading from one model to the next, I really didn't take any resale price hit on cars which have supposedly low resale value.
Well, in my perspective, you have lost a total of 25 lakhs in 8 years over 3 Tatas. If you had bought an innova for instance in 2012 and subsequently made lateral upgrades to innova crystas, you would have only lost about half of what you lost with tatas.

That 10 lakh discount in the discovery would remain unchanged irrespective of the car exchanged, I assumed.

Isolating your storme transaction, there is a depreciation of over 2.5 lakhs per year. That is what we have been registering in this thread. Storme has absurd resale.

In my opinion, you did lose a lot of money in resale. In case of Safaris you lose almost 50-60 pc value in 2-3 years. That's huge compared to what Toyota or Hyundais command in the resale market. Even in case of Hexa , you lost about 45 pc. That may seem reasonable till you hear the resale prices of Crysta and Creta. And that 10 lakhs discount probably has nothing to do with previous Tata ownership. I think you would have got that discount anyway. From a purely resale value perspective, you did take big hits.

I will pick if it is a 4X4, has less than 25K on the odo, is 2016 manufactured and is looked after well.

The pros of a body on frame SUV in my use case outweighs its cons and the high seating position with dedicated armrest is something which not many SUV's offer. Voted - Yes.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week | Buying a Used Tata Safari Storme

Having owned a Dicor 2.2 and driven it to over 1Lac kms, I will still buy one.

1) It still turns heads!
2) Easy to maintain without burning a hole.
3) At least in Bangalore, have good friends at TASS - Concorde or Emm Emm Motors ( if they still exist ).
4) Use as a highway mulcher or beater
5) Sofa Seating and killer aircon.

Dont care about other gizmos, so long as I can upgrade the ICE.

A single owner 50k example will be nice. Varicor 400 6 speed.

Its a no for me. Was never a fan of this sort of styling. The new VW SUV(W) lineup is more the thing that suits me.
Add to that the fact that it is discontinued and there would be tons of reliability issues down the road.

I think it's Heart over Head decision.

Though my heart says Go for it, my mind says No. Given so many niggles have been reported for Safari (Even Harrier 1.0 had), I personally won't plonk my money in used Safari.

I would recommend to look for other options with the same money & spend it wisely.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week | Buying a Used Tata Safari Storme

A resounding No!

The only experience I had with Safari was from 2009; that of a senior officer in my office. He had upgraded directly from a Maruti 800. At about just 5k on the Odo the timing belt snapped in City traffic of our small native place Latur. Bang! that were repairs worth a new Splendor bike. Luckily he had engine cover in insurance as told by him. I don't know whether he claimed warranty or not; but he was mentally prepared for this even before the purchase.

I was, am not still convinced with Tata unless I want a vehicle for commercial purposes.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week | Buying a Used Tata Safari Storme

Could not Vote as the voting options are still not enabled for me but would have voted "Yes".
My reasons -
1. No other ladder on frame 4*4 options available in the new car market if you want to keep your budget around 20 odd lakhs for a new car.
2. Relatively abuse friendly, good suspension, always helped glide over the pothole ridden roads without having to slow down.
3. Space - you can fold down the middle row seats and sleep on the flat floor. No need to carry any other camping equipment for upto 2 adults and a kid.
4. Like someone already mentioned, should be easy on the pocket in terms of servicing cost.
5. Looks and the view from inside are a given with the Safari.
6. Works well both as a daily driver inside the cities as well as a long distance tourer. I used it as my daily use car in Navi Mumbai / Mumbai for the 3 years.

Though finding a good condition 4*4 is really difficult in the used market. I had a 2014 4*4 model which I sold off in 2017 since I moved out of India and now that I am planning to be back in the country, started looking out on Team-BHP classifieds, Olx and other such websites but almost never found a 4*4 model. So reached out to the person whom I had sold out my car and sent him feelers that if he wants to sell, I should have the first right of refusal .
Keeping my fingers crossed that my plan goes through and the car is still in an acceptable condition.

Cheers,
M

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week | Buying a Used Tata Safari Storme

Voted a clear NO without any dilemma.

Forget about considering a used one now, I never liked the Tata Safari Storme. Now there are a plenty of wonderful choices available in the used car market.

Tata Safari shape always looked dated, tall and narrow. Not so great interiors also. There is a huge fan following the old Tata Safari (I respect their choices), but for me, the new 2021 Tata Safari is leagues ahead, modern and matured.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week | Buying a Used Tata Safari Storme

Being a person using TATA product for a pretty long time, I would say that it has its own share of niggles like any other automotive products would have and from what I have seen at TASS, there has been huge improvements. I don’t claim that it’s perfect or with zero errors but that would be the case with others too.
Coming to TATA Safari Storme, have been using it
for past 8 years, honestly I am not able to think of a replacement in the same budget bracket that I had bought it. For used option, it will depend on the particular safari vehicle that you have come across. Whether you know the past owner and how well they have maintained it. I can still vouch that my EX 4X2 can travel to any distance in the middle night without a hiccup.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week | Buying a Used Tata Safari Storme

Voted 'No'. While the car's fairly refined for what it is meant to be, I kinda hated the way it drove. The clutch was the spoilsport for me. For someone who's driven some good stickshifts in a limited driving experience, Safari was something which took me a lot of time to get used to.

The clutch isn't progressive at all. So much dead play. And when the travel is almost exhausted, the car starts to move. Take a lot of time to get used to it. What I like about the Storme has to be the overall refinement and NVH levels. BHPian ViXit's Storme which has clocked ~ 83,000 kms felt more refined than my ~ 35,000 kms run Hexa. Also the Storme has aged a lot better IMO. Plus it comes with a Varicor 320 which is fairly reliable. Ride quality is pretty good but it does get jiggly depending on the road surface (not a case with the Hexa).

Given a choice, I wouldn't buy a Storme for the kind of money the car commands in the used car market. There are better choices in the market for the same money.

Voted No - even if you are on a budget, there are better cars out there to get pre-owned. This purchase is for someone who wants to tick it off the bucket list.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week | Buying a Used Tata Safari Storme

I voted ‘yes’.

I bought a pre-used 2013 VX 4x4 Storme having 60000 km on the Odometer in April 2018. Storme is truly the last of the Mohican. A true workhorse with ‘absolutely magic carpet’ ride. I am 6 ft tall and have had lower back issue for the past 10 years. Of all the cars I have owned, I have found Storme to be the best riding car. The lumbar back support is also great but the neck support (cervical back) is poor in my case. For somebody with a different erect posture the seats are well supportive. Suspension is abuse friendly and long lasting. The doors open wide and getting in and out is no problem. I do not even use the step. I have got the right side step removed as I used to get a knock on my Achilles’ tendon while alighting.

The clutch is very soft for the size of the vehicle and the steering angle is perfect for me. Turning radius is also quite small like a sedan unlike the previous generation Safari. And the steering is also decent. The stock size tyres are reasonably priced and LONG lasting. The visibility is truly amazing. I prefer this type of old gen SUV with a low set dashboard and bonnet visibility and a near vertical A pilar. It has a large and airy cabin and and spacious 5 seater. The 2 jump seats are a joke and should not have been allowed in the first place. The luggage space is great if the jump seats are folded up.

The maintenance is surprisingly reasonable and most parts and filters are inexpensive. Good quality aftermarket parts like the front and rear brake pads (TVS Girling and Rane) are also available. So one doesn’t have to depend only on manufacturers OE parts which could get a bit expensive though still not in range of Fortuner. (I am talking of brake pads here).

The SUV gave me trouble only once with recurring check engine light issue with various insignificant codes shown. This ultimately got resolved at a Tata authorised service station where the stressed technician simply wiped the codes and the issue never occurred again. FE is decent. Around 10 kmpl in city and 12/13 on highway in 2H mode. For a vehicle of about 2650 kg this is not bad. Besides the check engine light problem, the SUV has not given me any trouble. It is the favourite of our family. And I would like to keep it as long as possible and legal. If in future I feel like upgrading and get hold of a good newer Storme again , I would not think twice.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week | Buying a Used Tata Safari Storme

Would have voted a big 'YES'.
Having owned 3 safaris till now ( two 2.2 dicors and a Storme refreshed ) , no other car that I have travelled in gives the comfort of a Safari. The commanding driving position and the road respect it gets is just hard to explain. It's a pure love affair. Once you start enjoying a Safari, there is no going back. We still regret selling the storme and hope one day we can find a well maintained one in the used car market. Iam even considering buying a used dicor for the time being until a good storme is available.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week | Buying a Used Tata Safari Storme

I own a 2015 Safari Storme VX 4X4 and live in Delhi NCR. Over the years I have driven it to Spiti ( twice), Bhutan, Rajasthan and several other trips. it is one helluva SUV . It has loads of presence, it has a fantastic engine , it can smother any bad road, and make its own road where none exists with the passengers being isolated from the noise and enjoying the most comfortable seats (as a 5 seater) in an vehicle priced less than 35 lakhs.

It is fairly fuel efficient. The light clutch, superb all round visibility and the 5.4 m turning circle make it far easier to drive in town than its massive proportions would lead you to believe. You climb into the truck. The high seating position, the enormous space all around you, no nonsense instrumentation and ice, soft feel interiors give the Storme an ageless charm.

As the time passes, the one anxiety that keeps on increasing for me as for fellow Safari owners is the 10 year limit for a Diesel vehicle in NCR. We love our Safaris and our Stormes. If you look for a true blue 4X4, SUV with tough ladder frame construction you cant find one without spending close to Rs.4 million. People talk about the Toyota Fortuner holding its value while the Safari depreciates fast. Well from where I see it, Toyota charges almost 40 to50 % more for the Fortuner than what it is worth.

Try getting a 4X4 Storme in good condition and you will be surprised that you will not find anybody ready to sell them. You will have to settle for a 4X2 or go in for one which has been owned and used by the politico types.

it is a legend and I will buy a one all over again if it is relaunched just the way it was when Tata Motors phased it out in 2019. The only caveat being that it has to be a 4X4.
