Mahindra trademarks XUV9OO, may be replacement to Alturas G4?

Mahindra has trademarked the XUV9OO name earlier this month and it could be used for a full-sized SUV.

Mahindra trademarks logo 'X' and new brands XUV100, 400, 700 & 900-smartselect_20210412122753_chrome.jpg

It is expected to be introduced in the near future as a rival to the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, MG Gloster and upcoming Isuzu MU-X as it could act as a replacement to the Alturas G4.

Is it just me or does anyone feel like Mahindra is going a little overboard with their 'double oh's? XUV9OO is good for identifying the different class of product from the existing portfolio but it doesn't sound anywhere near as appealing as the rivals.

I for one used to mention XUV5OO as 'eksuv' (pronounced) only because saying the whole name took a lot of effort in normal conversations.

It is only me or the name in the graphic looks more like XUV900 (double 0's) as opposed to XUV5OO (double O's)?

Mahindra trademarks logo 'X' and new brands XUV100, 400, 700 & 900

Mahindra is cooking up something seriously, trademarks 4 brands-XUV 100,400,700,900 and a new logo!

Mahindra has filed trademark applications for 4 titles namely XUV900, XUV700, XUV400 and XUV100 in India.

Finally, Mahindra has also trademarked a new ‘X’ logo for its SUVs

XUV900 would be the facelifted REXTON, quite liked it. XUV400 would be the 7seater version of the XUV300.
XUV family is so huge now with XUV 100,300,400,500,700 and the 900!

Brand 'X' is good for EVs.

An interesting thing to note is that they have trademarked the XUV1OO which would obviously be placed below the XUV3OO, whereas a few days back Anish Shah had said they won't be entering the micro SUV segment.

Did Mahindra poach someone from Bajaj in the recent past?

Discover family, Pulsar family, and now we have XUV family.

I don't think the "XUV" brand is that strong that it can be used for a wide variety of differently sized & priced crossovers. Mahindra would be foolish to think so. It must create unique identities as it has successfully done with the Scorpio, Thar, Bolero, XUV500 etc. Not everyone can pull off a family series like the Germans.

IMHO, Mahindra is simply trademarking these so that no one else uses them. For protection.

Re: Mahindra trademarks logo 'X' and new brands XUV100, 400, 700 & 900

This XUV business is not only confusing but also dilutes the brand to some extent in my opinion. Nothing beats a catchy name that soon becomes an iconic name plate. Scorpio, Safari, Bolero, Santro, Swift etc. Are examples of this. This game of alphanumerics gets very confusing for the layman.

A friend of mine once had to hire a self drive rental for a road trip with a lot of luggage and 5 passengers. When he asked me for advice, I told him to hire something like an Innova or XUV. Unfortunately, I did not specify the '5 double oh' part and the poor chap ended up getting a Revv XUV300 which came with its hopelessly small boot and merely 2 rows of seats and hence no space for the 5th passenger.
Of course, I would place most of the blame on him for not checking the seating capacity while booking, but for the rest of the blame, Mahindra and me are equal partners.

I dont know how many here eat Paan, but there is a joke that I cant resist posting here.

This new naming convention sounds like Paan, "Bhai 120/300, Katha Kam, Chuna Kam, Katri Supari" - Imagine going to a Mahindra Showroom in the future "Ek, 100/300 dena, music system jyada, sunroof kam"

It is very difficult for Mahindra to succeed above 25 lakhs. Unless they significantly undercut the rivals but even then, not many people who can afford 40 plus lakhs on a car would love to be seen in a Mahindra. Fortuner and Endeavor are brands in themselves and it would be childish to lock horns with them. Under the present insane competition, even xuv700 won't have it easy. Let them put all their efforts from 10 lakhs to 25 lakhs.

Re: Mahindra trademarks logo 'X' and new brands XUV100, 400, 700 & 900

I would say the timing is right for our domestic players like Tata and Mahindra to enter the premium segments.

Mahindra has been there with the engine and drive train for quite some time. Their cars have also matured in ride and handling and they have worked wonders on the quality of plastics. OT, I still remember the first set of scorpios had a sticker on the hood, that got discoloured in a year or less.
Now, there is one word to showcase how far they have come, THAR. call it whatever you may, but it is a success for Mahindra.

Tata, likewise has grown in maturity from the erstwhile indica to the nexon and altroz, which might be quirky, but no more than the Santro (when it first came out). Tatas have upped the game in terms of quality like nobody else. They still have some catching up to do with the Toyotas, but that could happen in the 25-30 Lac plus segments where they have the margin to really improve their game.

I would say Bring it on. Let the markets be the final judge.

Re: Mahindra trademarks logo 'X' and new brands XUV100, 400, 700 & 900

I wonder why Mahindra didn't want XUV 200, 600 and 800? I often think the names kuv100 and tuv300 contributed, at least a little, to their failure. Cars need names when they reach show rooms, not code names. Until a few years ago, I wouldn't know which car to visualize in my mind when I hear the name BRV, WRV or CRV.

Imagine some car-naive guy wants to buy a 7 seater car for 40L. His friend recommends the CRV. A few days later, the guy sees a BRV on the roads, thinks its the same car his friend had recommended and comes to a conclusion that it isn't a worthy for 40L, rejects Honda brand without even visiting the showroom and jumps to other brands. This could've happened in real. Imagine how many potential customers Mahindra could lose this way.

IMO, no two cars from the same brand should have similar names(or math formulae like in mahindra).

Autocar’s magazine has some exclusive Mahindra Future Plan and have showcased the XUV9OO as a coupe version of the current gen XUV5OO.
