Well, we actually have company bicycles here in the Netherlands. And tax advantages for anybody using a bicycle to commute!

Middle class has to understand one thing. Governments will continue to work for Big Industrialists as they fund elections spend, and Governments will also keep running populist scheme for poor as they are a big vote bank. Solution? Make it count at election time. Vote in big numbers, and Vote wisely!
That said, isn’t that what the current GOI trying to do? I would think so with my limited understanding and observations in the last decade. Frankly that is one of the reasons I believe in the current government and don’t mind the higher fuel prices.

But whom to vote for is a bigger problem.

Hope one day I can build a home to live off the grid and stop funding freebies.

I do want to help my country develop, I just need to find a better way than just paying indirect taxes.

Re: Regular petrol hits a century for the first-ever time in India

When I think about this more, I don't really think even
the diesel hike will hit the poorest of the poor. Food grains is provided by PDS. The poor will use public transport as much as possible. Those fares will not be impacted. So the net increase in their monthly household bill is not going to be much.

The government has also started the direct money transfer to the poor farmers etc.

Now the current government really knows how to win elections. Closer to elections the government will simplify/lower the direct tax slabs further by removing all exemptions enjoyed by the professionals/business owners. This may hurt a few who makes use of some of these deductions but the bulk of middle class who earn in the 2-12 lakh annually will be overjoyed.

Overall the current government will strengthen it's hold and will have an easy source of revenue too.

It's an easy fix - privatize all banks. Let's see how many support that.

Our literate and illiterate public is easily lured by fake promises. Poor souls are still waiting for 15L in their bank accounts. Herds mentality and quiet a fan following is a big problem. No body want to think and vote. Before, they use to bribe voters illegally before voting, now they are doing it legally by sending money to their bank accounts.

some people may not like what I'm saying here but remember, there is a phrase that "an educated enemy is better than an illiterate friend".

What more you can expect from non-economist as a finance minister?

Re: Regular petrol hits a century for the first-ever time in India

In a lighter vein.
Note: This is satire.

Quote:
Fuel prices are at all time high in the country crossing ₹100 mark in Rajasthan. There has been quite an uproar against the government for the continuous and a price hike like never before.

While at other places people are protesting to get relief from the fuel prices, Kerala witnessed a bizarre incident where a man came up with an innovative idea to reduce the cost of fuel for himself by buying Petrol at ₹1.5/litre from Venezuela and smuggling it by concealing it in capsules and hiding it in his rectum much like the gold smugglers.
https://thefauxy.com/kerala-man-caug...in-his-rectum/

Read this in the context of recent spate of smugglers caught at airports with gold hidden in their exhaust vents.

Re: Regular petrol hits a century for the first-ever time in India

Historically, Karnataka and Bangalore in particular have had one of the highest fuel prices in the country, but thankfully Petrol is still priced below Rs.100.

Tanked up the car this morning and petrol was priced at Rs.93.59

Re: Regular petrol hits a century for the first-ever time in India

While many people may justify the increase in fuel prices as part of nation building and revenues needed by government to support freebies and other expenditures, but the truth is, even with lowering down interest rates on business and other loans, the industry and corporates has not expanded much so that the corporate and income taxes would be enough to fulfill government coffers and ultimately Govt is needing to tax 200% of fuel for easy money..

On a lighter note, this may speed up the infrastructure for EVs and adoption of EVs on a larger scale. We may start seeing beginning of new EVs especially in commercial vehicle segment and heavy vehicles like trucks, tractors, containers which are used for transportation of goods thereby benefitting all sections of society as a whole.

But it will still be few years for that to become a reality. Heavy vehicle makers like Tata, Mahindra or Ashok Leyland are still sceptical to move to EVs in commercial vehicles even though Nitin Gadkari has been trying to push this from a long time.

However there is no denying that the time is ripe for them to invest in this. The future is Electric and we need to start believing this whether we like it or not.

Re: Regular petrol hits a century for the first-ever time in India

I have reconciled with the fact that fuel prices will keep increasing, irrespective of the party in power, with very few paying income taxes, high sales tax is another reason, consumers buy without bills. Govt will have to keep taxing us to run the govt, and many subsidy schemes the govt provides.

With the above, the govt will have to invest in better public transport and pvt companies should start encouraging more work from home wherever it is feasible.

Re: Regular petrol hits a century for the first-ever time in India

Well the good news is analysts expect crude to go upto $75 by summer, so now even Delhi folks can partake in the joy of reaching a century.

It seems to me that Rs 100 is going to be the new Rs 75 for petrol. When petrol hits Rs 110 - Rs 120, government will cut some of the taxes "lower the prices" to Rs 95 - Rs 100.

While people may grin and bear the extra fuel cost (no real immediate alternatives), they'll probably offset it by reducing expenses elsewhere. It's bound to have a knock-on effect, in an already stuttering economy.

Re: Regular petrol hits a century for the first-ever time in India

I think our present government has been well shielded by the crazy fans. Even to this date some defend this as 'Much needed for nation building', 'Oh, Congress looted India for 70 years' etc. Very soon, we should see the fans also crumbling amidst the rising prices.

The majority of people think fuel price rise as merely fuelling their vehicle and if they can afford that extra cost. It's the completely wrong way of thinking. Please think of the impact fuel price rise will have on food grains and other essentials. They arent hauled free of cost and involves fuel. Also, think of the lower middle class and poorer classes who already find it difficult to make ends meet. Also, never forget that we are still in the pandemic and most prefer to use a private vehicle.

Also, if one really wants to give up their fossil fuel vehicle, does our country offer good public transport? Not really. At least in a place like Bangalore, literally every person needs to have at least a 2 wheeler.

I dare our governments to provide a robust public transport means, make arrangements/plans so that fuel rise don't affect inflation AND then maybe raise fuel prices to 50% more than now also which will be acceptable. Same for scrappage policy.

Re: Regular petrol hits a century for the first-ever time in India

There seem to be conciliatory tones from the Finance Minister about states meeting them halfway in reducing their VAT as well. Plus the petroleum minister has suggested that fuel should come under GST, thus handing them full control over the revenues.

Hope there is enough pressure on these guys to work something out and get the prices down where they should be!
