re: Tata Motors: Marc Llistosella appointed as CEO & MD, replacing Guenter Butschek

Mr.Butschek took over the reigns during one of the toughest and most challenging times in Tata motors. He then played a key role, and by tough decisions radically transformed Tata motors both in product line up and as organization.

He is leaving Tata motors with one major unresolved issue of JLR! We can only hope that the newcomer can carry on the momentum and add his own touch in right direction.

Mr Gunter Butschek was responsible for India operations of TATA Motors covering both CVs and PCBU. He did not have any direct role at JLR.

JLR operations were under Dr Ralph Speath earlier and now is being managed Thierry Bollore.

re: Tata Motors: Marc Llistosella appointed as CEO & MD, replacing Guenter Butschek

When Gunter Butschek took over following the abrupt passing away of his predecessor, he said all the right things from day 1. Replacing legacy products with new exciting cars, make Tata an aspirational brand blah... blah

I felt like we have heard all this before but end up seeing more of the same from TML. Boy has he delivered.... What an impressive turnaround this has been. I am sure there are other manufacturers looking to have Gunter on board.

At Team bhp we keep overlooking the fact that Tatas core business is CVs and I feel this is why Marc has been hired. To re-energise the commercial operations. This was an interesting interview, just before Marc was promoted at Daimler to head international operations and was about to leave India.

re: Tata Motors: Marc Llistosella appointed as CEO & MD, replacing Guenter Butschek

Llistosella is a very tough taskmaster.
One of my friend, who used to report to him during his stint at Daimler, (BharatBenz), told me about Llistosella's ability to galvanise people to action.
Apparently, his customer focus was intense, so much so, that in the early days of Daimler India, he himself, drove competitor's trucks for hundreds of kilometres on Indian highways to understand the product attributes or the lack of it. Which were then effectively channeled back to his engineering department as part of the critical product planning exercise for the BharatBenz range.

TML has essentially drafted him in to breathe new life into their Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, (CVBU).
Keeping in mind Llistosella's track record, he should be able to take TML to better days ahead.

re: Tata Motors: Marc Llistosella appointed as CEO & MD, replacing Guenter Butschek

Mr Gunter Butschek is definitely a hero as far as TaMo is concerned. Sad to see him leaving. Yes, we must respect his priorities (staying with his family in Germany). He joined TaMo in difficult times after the sad demise of Karl Slym(Britisher who just could stay away from India) who kickstarted the changes in passenger vehicles altogether. Mr Gunter helped Tata to replace their legacy cars and rebuild entirely new portfolio starting from Taigo, Tigor, HBX, Altroz, Nexon, Harrier and Safari. The missing ones in the line-up are a Creta/Seltos rival and a proper 4X4. Yes, they do need a modern version of people mover like Sumo but that won't be the priority.

Mr Marc Llistosella seems to be more interested in future technologies. It is evident when he joined Einride, a company that specialises on electric and self-driving vehicles. I think it is right move by Tata to bring in Marc. Game on! Tata needs now to focus on electrification of its PVs and modernizing their trucks (and bring some electrification on CVs also). Looks like Marc is the right person considering his performance in Daimler and how he was instrumental in building BharatBenz brand in India.

IIRC Mr Gunter Butschek was the highest paid CEO in the Auto Industry, and IMO it was well worth it for TATA Motors! What a great step it was to have the head COO of Airbus revamp Tata Motors', most importantly - its operations.

Marc Llistosella being from a similar background of having worked at Daimler, would be a really thoughtful choice for heading the commercial vehicles division.

P.S. : Tata Motors has come a long way thanks to (Late) Karl Slym and Mr. Gunter Butschek. Both great personalities & deeply insightful about their work.

Gunter Butschek was a great CEO for Tata Motors. Coming immediately after the tragic death of Karl Slym, Mr. Butschek managed to keep recovery on track. Tata motors turned a corner under him. He is leaving on a high when everyone is asking why rather than why not.

Marc Llistosella should focus on commercial segment without losing momentum in passenger cars.

I am sad to see Gunter Butschek go. I hope Marc likes passenger cars and not focus just on CVs though Tata Motors' commercial vehicle portfolio does need an overhaul. Good luck to Marc Llistosello and TaMo.

Very true and he leads by example.

A decade back Marc was heading Bharat Benz’s campaign which was squarely aimed at Tata Motors. Tata Motors took serious note of him even then. To see Marc heading Tata motors now is epic. Well done!!

The following article from many years ago will throw light on his style of working.

https://www.forbesindia.com/article/...sector/32672/1

He’s the opposite of management that cocoons itself in closed doors in the top most floor.

But I don’t know how good he’s with passenger vehicles.

Wild thought. What if this is the beginning of Tata Motors splitting the CV and PV businesses like Daimler Benz? The name, “Tata Motors” is an asset to the former and a liability to the later.

re: Tata Motors: Marc Llistosella appointed as CEO & MD, replacing Guenter Butschek

Everyone who has worked in Daimler India in the past decade knows Mr Llistosella and his working style quite well. He had a very hands on approach and was insanely driven. These are my first thoughts after reading about his appointment as MD of TML:
  • He was ahead of Tesla in developing the electric truck. His launch of E Canter did not get great publicity. This man knows his Electric vehicles(albeit from a Trucking perspective)
  • He is well suited in taking over from the current CEO. Both have German roots and the handover must be smooth.
  • He has good knowledge of India. He took on Tata/ALL and managed to create a presence for Bharatbenz in India.
  • He has worked closely with Indians & had many Indians in key positions.
  • He was leading the operations of Asia till 2018 from Japan. This is very important and I cannot emphasize this point enough. He went from leading a startup (DICV) to leading an established company with a long legacy(Fuso). The size and diversity of Tata will not overwhelm him, as he has already seen this while in Japan.
  • He now has a shot at creating a legacy for himself and for the organization he gets to serve. He will want to see his name along with the Musk, Ghosn, Iacoccas of this world and this would be his shot at making it BIG.

Re: Tata Motors: Marc Llistosella appointed as CEO & MD, replacing Guenter Butschek

Hmm. So based on BHPian comments, it's basically a truck guy vs a car guy. I guess Karl Slym was also more of a car guy, so Tata is getting a commercial vehicle specialist boss after the longest time. Tata's car business has been roaring of late and I hope the same push continues.

Maybe it is time to separate the two? Remember, Tata has been looking to hive out its passenger car business (Tata Motors to hive off passenger car business into a separate subsidiary).

Re: Tata Motors: Marc Llistosella appointed as CEO & MD, replacing Guenter Butschek

yes the process is already started to hive off PV business into a new entity. Already all info is been circulated to all stake holders. A final call is been taken on 5 march when they have a share holder meeting for the same.

This new entity shall bear a loss of 17000 cr approx at start. hence they wanted to bring a partner, but as post covid the shift to TML cars, may shift the decision.

cheers

Re: Tata Motors: Marc Llistosella appointed as CEO & MD, replacing Guenter Butschek

From the above posts - it looks like another involved person, like Tata Motors had Sumant Moolgaonkar long back. With Marc's experience at Bharat Benz, I would look forward to a stronger TM presence in the CV sector. With increasing expanding infrastructure across the country, there will be a demand for good long distance HGCV vehicles.

A cousin recently picked up a Tata 1512 BS 6 - and it looks much different than the previous gen truck. Telematics, engine, the handling: he is very happy with the truck. Hoping to see more of these on the roads. Just hope they dont make then look hideous like some of the Ultra's or Mahindra trucks.

Wishing Marc & Tata Motors the best !

He is probably not joining as of now. Guenter may continue for a while.
Chatter to this effect was very strong on the sidelines of the recent Vendor meet. Its probably announced today.

Had he joined it would have been sweet irony as he had helped BB poach a lot of talents from TML (and ALL) during in the initial phase.
