Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2021

@UtkarshC and other contributors to this thread, could we please have some numbers from the Lexus stable as well? If Rolls Royce's 1 unit sale is being reported, I am guessing Lexus would also be available somewhere. Kindly do try

FADA has released the vehicle registration data of luxury cars for October 2021.

Mercedes-Benz comes out on top with 1,001 units sold. It is followed by BMW and Jaguar Land Rover, which have sold 765 units and 174 units respectively.

Luxury carmakers sales for October 2021

  • Mercedes-Benz - 1,001 units, up from 916 units in October 2020
  • BMW - 765 units, up from 631 units in October 2020
  • Jaguar Land Rover - 174 units, up from 163 units in October 2020
  • Volvo - 120 units, down from 153 units in October 2020
  • Audi - 105 units (CBU), up from 7 units in October 2020
  • Porsche - 25 units, up from 23 units in October 2020
  • Lamborghini - 4 units, up from 1 unit in October 2020
  • Bentley - 2 units, same as in October 2020
  • Rolls-Royce - 0 units, down from 1 unit in October 2020
Audi seems to be way down even behind Volvo. Q5 launch in November and Q7 launch in December should boost up sales for Audi

Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2021

Oh it’s such an insight into luxury sales segment. Look at the significant difference between Mercedes, BMW and the rest of the companies! Certainly proves Mercedes, BMW have earned trust of customers with their strong lineup and service quality. There’s a lot for Audi to catch up on because they’ve a major drawback - no Diesels whilst all other players have diesels. VAG is not confident on their emission control mostly for India!

Audi's numbers seem relatively low. Looks like half those numbers were fuelled by discount threads on the A4 on TBHP!

The numbers for Audi seem to be CBUs. Given the A4 & A6 are CKDs, don't think they would be included in this count.

No mention of the many blue A4’s sold to members of this forum though they might not want to admit that they were robbed judging by the discounts.

Anyway, the 100 percent growth is nothing to get excited about, let’s see coming months based on actual availability and also how Mercedes new retail plan kicks in.

2021 Luxury car sales data interpretation with discount related information

Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2021-1.jpg

Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2021-2.jpg

Interpretation of the combined information published by - JATO India and sales data reported by luxury car makers in India:
  • Mercedes Benz offered the least discount, among the big three Germans, in 2021 and sold the most number of vehicles in the Indian luxury passenger vehicle market. Competitively, Mercedes Benz India is doing well and became a true luxury car market leader for now.
  • BMW is little behind Mercedes Benz in terms of volume, also, the average discount is quite high. That means BMW is achieving sales backed by discounts and is not able to deliver true value. Their profit margin could be under pressure.
  • Audi, well, it has strongly established itself as a ‘discount luxury car brand’ in India. They are unable to move cars out of the showrooms without hefty discounts, which means their P&L (Profit & Loss) statement could be in red. To be fair to Audi India, lack of diesel engine in their Indian portfolio, means, they are playing in just ~30% of the Indian luxury car market – which is also their fault.
Note: JLR India has stopped publishing sales figures since 2019 and JATO India didn’t publish Porsche and Volvo’s sales incentive data, so nothing much can be concluded about them.
