Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

Voted for Tesla

I'm a big Tesla fan. I really like what they had achieved when compared to other traditional manufactures. I like their design, technology and minimalist approach to the interiors and dashboard.

I closely follow Tesla Shanghai in YouTube and still cannot believe how they transformed barren farmland into gigantic machines producing M3s and MYs in just 2 years time. Even impressive was the Phase 2 construction. It was finished in record 10 months and production of MYs started immediately.

Model Y Performance is my dream car now. I may book a track day and drive some meaty cars of big 3 Germans. But I wish to own one from Tesla. Flingers tightly crossed.

Cheers!

To be honest, I don't think the Big 3 are really that far removed from their less popular peers.
While they have had the longest run in the market and are the most popular, they aren't necessarily best in class.

Out of the other rival brands, I would strongly consider :
1) Lexus: Pricing aside, they are competent cars for those who value peace of mind, comfort, and reliability over glamour (Mercedes, Audi) & driving pleasure (BMW).
With CKD operations, the ES pricing on paper seems fairly competitive until you bring in the fact that there are literally nil discounts.
In my opinion, it would be a great pre-owned buy post depreciation given its superior reliability.

2) Volvo: great products! However there is the worry of after sales support & lack of petrol engine options. The recent thread on the S90 interior trim coming apart is shocking to say the least to a prospective buyer. Also have seen the odd S90 with a busted rear air suspension : with the support shown from the company in the earlier case it has the potential to go the Audi route. However, many friends who own Volvos are quite happy so I guess it boils down to the dealer at the end of the day.
A well priced S60 Cross Country would make for a swell alternative to entry level SUVs like the X1 with their poorer interiors & feature set.

3) Porsche: its an aspirational brand. With a better dealer being appointed in Mumbai, service should be back on track & their main money maker (Cayenne) should be fairly reliable owing to its German underpinnings.
However pricing is just crazy if you're looking for a family car - a base 4 cylinder Macan for X5 6 cylinder money just doesn't make sense.

At the moment I would avoid Tesla for a year or so after launch. I see it doing very well in the market but I wouldn't want to be one of the beta testers.

Same for JLR: boring interiors, tight space, average engines, overpriced SUVs, and poor service.

Voted for :

Volvo : sat inside a V40 cross country at IGI T3 and immediately it appealed as "the car", sadly isn't available anymore but the latest S60 is quite impressive.

Superb : was discussing with friends about the latest iteration and immediately came the remark that lets admire a car we could never buy. But a used Superb 3-5 years down the line ? That has me hooked.

Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

My votes :

Volvo:
To play the role of luxury family cars with top notch safety and nowadays lots of features and good looks also.

Porsche:
To play the role of 'Driver's Luxury Cars' as Porsche provides the best ride and handling setup among all the luxury car makers in my opinion.

Cars from mainstream brands:
I personally prefer to buy cars from mainstream brands if those apparent luxury brands are not providing me great driving experience for the price bracket.
For example, i will consider buying Mercedes E/C or BMW 3/5 but only with engines which are 6 cylinder and higher spec. Otherwise if i am left to buy those luxury cars with 4 pot engines, i will rather choose the Camry Hybrid over these luxury brands.

Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

I think the big 3 are called 'BIG 3' for a reason. There is just something about Mercs, BMWs & Audis that's special in a way other brands can't be. They are premium and luxurious but also familiar and, dare I say 'practical' at the same time.

But I also agree that Porsches & Minis are great for people who have owned the big 3 for many years and are looking for a change. Plus, these 2 brands specifically have that extra special 00mph to them that the big 3 don't necessarily have. So from the list, I would ONLY buy a Porsche or a Mini.

Volvo just misses out in my opinion. Their cars are great, but I've had Mercs for 12+ years. Would still get a big 3 car over a Volvo but maybe that's just me. The others - Lexus, Jag, Land Rover etc. I would personally never consider.

Voted for Others as "None" was not an option.
Not that I can afford any of the luxury cars at the moment , even if I can, in future, I would not put my money on any of them considering how bad consumer protection laws are here. At the max I may go with a sleeper vehicle like Innova.

Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

Where is Ford Mustang? Or F150 Raptor?

I mean like Tesla, Ford is also on paper working on importing their higher end products.

Aren't Mustang / Raptor luxury or they fall into some other category?

If Porsche is up in that list, where is Ferrari? Or Lamborghini? Austin Martin?

All the other names mentioned in the voting list are either too common (German brands) or outright boring, lacking that dream & aspiration.

Personally I would bet my hard earned money on a luxury SUV like Ford F150 Raptor. For me, perfect for our Indian roads

Thanks.

Voted for Jaguar. Love their looks and the way it attracts attention on road. Real head turner. Not sure if I'd buy one. Heart says buy it.. head says avoid it.

Maserati is another brand I would love to buy if I had tons of money.

Voted Lexus, our company owns 2 of them, a 6 yr old LX 570 - 59000kms and 4 yr old RX 350 - 21000kms.
As much as I am not a big fan of the skirts and creases (RX), the reliability, luxury and comfort these two cars offer are superb. after 6 years not a niggle, not a squeak or rattle I must say. Hats off to Lexus quality standards. And cheaper than other luxury brands to service and maintain.

I am an outlier on this. For me the ultimate luxury is "peace of mind". And so I would go in for the Toyota Land Cruiser.

Option 8.
Luxury cars from mainstream brands.
The examples are given just because they are the most popular ones and are on sale now. Not planned or rumoured.

Well, the thread is about alternative purchases other than the German Big3.
Higher variants of the Porsche 911 may touch the pricing of the cheapest Ferraris or Lambos, but most of Porsche's best sellers slog it out with the Germans for market share, albeit at a slight sportiness premium pricing.

Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martina are at another level altogether.

Something wrong with the percentage shown in the poll.

Voted for :

1. Lexus - Huge fan of Japanese cars. If I am able to afford a luxury car, Lexus would be the first choice.

2. Volvo - Always had a liking for that boxy shapes and the kind of robust, durable and sophisticated image they have around them. Personally I find their current lineup extremely appealing, especially the V90 Cross.

3. Porsche - Sporty, Luxury SUV I would not look beyond the Cayenne !

4. Jaguar - It’s a Jaaaaag ! Enough said. Reliability be damned.

Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

Personally I do not follow the "Luxury" car segment much. But I _LOVE_ Land Cruiser. They are minority in number but still if I spot it on road, I just can not miss to admire. Sheer presence of car and clean looks makes me admire them.
Apart from LC, I like Porsche.

Porsche - True everyday sports car (not sure about luxury though)
Mini - Small car, big heart. Makes me smile every time I drive one
Tesla - If I need to join the electric bandwagon may as well go for the one that started it all.
