Maruti Suzuki's Gujarat plant to scale down production due to chip crisis.

Maruti Suzuki's Gujarat plant will scale down its production activity this month due to a shortage of semiconductors. At some of its manufacturing lines, the facility will scale down production to single shift. Maruti further informed that its Ahmedabad-based plant will tentatively not carry out production on three Saturdays of the month - August 7, 14 and 21.

TSMC has just hiked the price of chips used in autos by 20%.

So not just delayed deliveries, it is going to lead to price hikes as well.

This can inversely affect demand! Demand will fall owing to price hikes and maybe this stabilizes supply though. Personally, if Hyundai announces another price hike owing to this, I am surely canceling my booking. Will shift new car plans to H2 of 2022 then.

The thing is that there is a section of people who buy vehicles irrespective of price. A few thousand Rupee Price up will hardly deter such prospective customers. So, I don't see any dent in sales. But since I work in the Auto Industry and that too very closely with OEMs like Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki etc, the situation is really bad, especially for Toyota. In Japan, they don't sack people, but production has been badly disrupted especially for lower margin cheaper vehicles.

Here's a rare chance to see a car interior with a digital instrument cluster but no infotainment : Yes it is VW Nivus now sold in Brazil, making many more functions redundant due to the chip shortage.

The microchip shortage is no joke, folks. Some automakers have been forced to temporarily shut down the production of certain models due to the lack of semiconductors. Others have built incomplete vehicles, which are now patiently waiting at the factory to receive the missing parts before being shipped to dealers and customers. We've also seen cars being sold without features we now take for granted.

Volkswagen is no exception as its supply chain has also been greatly disrupted by the lack of microchips.The small crossover also does away with an infotainment system as all you get is a plastic lid where there used to be a touchscreen.

The mail actually says the volumes will be 40% of regular production, which implies a 60% reduction, not 40%!

MG Motor India festival production affected. MG is facing a 40-50% production hit over the next two months due to growing chip shortage and sea container availability.

Rajeev Chaba, president & MD, MG Motor India, said: "Unfortunately our festival production will be hampered massively because the situation is really bad. Overall our numbers will be really depressed compared to a normal festival season production as we would be doing 40-50% of usual demand in next two months."

Skoda to halt Czech plants for a week due to chip shortage.

India Accelerates Talks with Taiwan on chip plant

India and Taiwan are in talks on an agreement that could bring chip manufacturing to South Asia along with tariff reductions on components for producing semiconductors by the end of the year, people familiar with the matter said, a move that may spark fresh tensions with China.

Officials in New Delhi and Taipei have met in recent weeks to discuss a deal that would bring a chip plant worth an estimated $7.5 billion to India to supply everything from 5G devices to electric cars, the people said. India is currently studying possible locations with adequate land, water and manpower, while saying it would provide financial support of 50% of capital expenditure from 2023 as well as tax breaks and other incentives, the people said.

Officials in Taipei wanted quick progress on a bilateral investment agreement that would include tariff reductions on dozens of products used to make semiconductors -- a precursor to a broader trade deal also under consideration, the people said.
