Maruti Suzuki's Gujarat plant to scale down production due to chip crisis.

Quote:
Maruti Suzuki's Gujarat plant will scale down its production activity this month due to a shortage of semiconductors. At some of its manufacturing lines, the facility will scale down production to single shift. Maruti further informed that its Ahmedabad-based plant will tentatively not carry out production on three Saturdays of the month - August 7, 14 and 21.

Voted for the "Delay in car delivery" option on the poll. Waiting for the delivery of my Hyundai Creta; the delivery period was intimated as 4-5 months, but now the dealer has informed it might take 6 months+ , considering the backed-up production!

Re: Semiconductor chip shortage hits car production in India

TSMC has just hiked the price of chips used in autos by 20%.

So not just delayed deliveries, it is going to lead to price hikes as well.

This can inversely affect demand! Demand will fall owing to price hikes and maybe this stabilizes supply though. Personally, if Hyundai announces another price hike owing to this, I am surely canceling my booking. Will shift new car plans to H2 of 2022 then.

Re: Semiconductor chip shortage hits car production in India

The thing is that there is a section of people who buy vehicles irrespective of price. A few thousand Rupee Price up will hardly deter such prospective customers. So, I don't see any dent in sales. But since I work in the Auto Industry and that too very closely with OEMs like Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki etc, the situation is really bad, especially for Toyota. In Japan, they don't sack people, but production has been badly disrupted especially for lower margin cheaper vehicles.

Re: Semiconductor chip shortage hits car production in India

Here's a rare chance to see a car interior with a digital instrument cluster but no infotainment : Yes it is VW Nivus now sold in Brazil, making many more functions redundant due to the chip shortage.

Quote:
The microchip shortage is no joke, folks. Some automakers have been forced to temporarily shut down the production of certain models due to the lack of semiconductors. Others have built incomplete vehicles, which are now patiently waiting at the factory to receive the missing parts before being shipped to dealers and customers. We've also seen cars being sold without features we now take for granted.

Volkswagen is no exception as its supply chain has also been greatly disrupted by the lack of microchips. The small crossover also does away with an infotainment system as all you get is a plastic lid where there used to be a touchscreen.

Maruti Suzuki has announced that it is expecting a slump in vehicle production in September by 60%.

The decision to production cut has been taken in the light of the supply chain crisis, especially the microchip crisis.

The mail actually says the volumes will be 40% of regular production, which implies a 60% reduction, not 40%!

Mahindra & Mahindra has announced that the company is facing a supply shortage of semiconductors and will be making production cuts at its plants. However there will be no material impact of the above event on the XUV7OO production ramp-up and launch plans.

Texas city to offer Samsung large property tax breaks to build $17 bln chip plant

Quote:
Sept 6 (Reuters) - The city of Taylor, Texas - one of two locations in the state under consideration by Samsung Electronics for a $17 billion chip plant - plans to offer extensive property tax breaks if it is chosen by the South Korean tech giant.

MG Motor India festival production affected. MG is facing a 40-50% production hit over the next two months due to growing chip shortage and sea container availability.

Quote:
Rajeev Chaba, president & MD, MG Motor India, said: "Unfortunately our festival production will be hampered massively because the situation is really bad. Overall our numbers will be really depressed compared to a normal festival season production as we would be doing 40-50% of usual demand in next two months."

Skoda to halt Czech plants for a week due to chip shortage.

Quote:
From delayed car deliveries to a supply shortfall in home appliances and smartphones, businesses and consumers across the world have been facing the consequences of an unprecedented shortage in semiconductor microchips.

In the Czech Republic, production has been hit in the auto sector, a key driver of the economy. Skoda has thousands of cars unfinished as it waits for chips.
Quote:
Recent COVID-19 outbreaks in Asia, for example in Malaysia, are forcing semiconductor manufacturers to close their factories again. This has resulted in industry-wide adjustments to car production, and SKODA AUTO is also affected
Quote:
expect the overall supply situation to ease by the end of the year
Quote:
Toyota has also been forced to halt production at its Czech plant for periods in the past few months.

India Accelerates Talks with Taiwan on chip plant

Quote:
India and Taiwan are in talks on an agreement that could bring chip manufacturing to South Asia along with tariff reductions on components for producing semiconductors by the end of the year, people familiar with the matter said, a move that may spark fresh tensions with China.

Officials in New Delhi and Taipei have met in recent weeks to discuss a deal that would bring a chip plant worth an estimated $7.5 billion to India to supply everything from 5G devices to electric cars, the people said. India is currently studying possible locations with adequate land, water and manpower, while saying it would provide financial support of 50% of capital expenditure from 2023 as well as tax breaks and other incentives, the people said.

Officials in Taipei wanted quick progress on a bilateral investment agreement that would include tariff reductions on dozens of products used to make semiconductors -- a precursor to a broader trade deal also under consideration, the people said.
Good news for India!
Promoters of Jio, and possibly Tata Sons, are gonna make it happen.

Next up should be the privatization of Ordinance Factories so that we might finally have some working guns.

Government to setup a task force to tackle the semiconductor shortage issue.

Quote:
The government may set up a task force to tackle the semiconductor shortage, CNBC Awaaz has reported.

The task force will also suggest incentives to be given for companies to set up semiconductor plants in India.
