VW teases new SUV for India; could be Atlas Cross Sport

Volkswagen plans to launch two new SUVs in India in 2021. While we know that one of them is the Taigun, the second model is still a mystery.

Volkswagen has teased the new SUV for the Indian market in a recent presentation. Rumours suggest that it could be the Atlas Cross Sport.

The Atlas Cross Sport is a large SUV with a coupe-like body style. The SUV measures just under 5 meters in length. It has a bold front end design featuring VW's family look with L-shaped LED daytime running lights.

The Atlas Cross Sport has a seating capacity of 5. It offers features such as a 12-speaker Fender audio system, wireless charging, heated and ventilated front seats, connected car technology and safety aids like Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Jam Assist and Lane Keeping Assist among others.

In the international market, the Atlas Cross Sport is offered with two petrol engine options. These include a 3.6-litre V6 producing 276 BHP and 361 Nm and a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol that puts out 235 BHP and 363 Nm. Both engines come paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system.

This looks like a Skoda Karoq version of the VW. VW should get this asap and pit it against the likes of Compass and Tucson. The 2.0 Liter Turbo petrol and AWD combo at less than 30lkhs OTR price would be fantastic! Anything more than this mark would be too expensive.

Totally agree with you , it has the potential to completely steal the sales of harrier , compass and Tucson but it should be priced less than 30 lakhs.

Rumours suggest that this SUV might be introduced even before the launch of the highly anticipated Taigun. It could hit as early as March 2021.

Re: VW teases new SUV for India; could be Atlas Cross Sport

I find it highly unlikely that VW would get this car here.

Reason: The Atlas Cross Sport is a Toyota Highlander/Venza Rival in the USA. (Tiguan is a RAV4 Rival) and it is a good $5k premium over the Tiguan.

This means the cars it can get to rival it would be the Fortuner/Endeavour/Gloster etc. The problem being VW already has a Tiguan Allspace so there almost no breathing space available for positioning the Atlas’s pricing.

Above BHPians, doesn’t VW already have the TROC to rival the Compass?

VW doesn’t have to overcomplicate it’s lineup, when they (would) have SUVs in all sub 4 million INR segments.

The best that VW can do to succeed in India would be making a sub 4m suv from scratch and pitting it against the likes of MSIL Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet etc.

They already discontinued a handful of cars an year ago. The last thing they’d want to do is shelve the T Roc and Allspace to accommodate their new SUV.

Audi on the other hand being a premium name, would be more capable to launch this car in India.

Atlas Cross Sport seems to be an much bigger and premium offering to compete with Tucson / Compass. See link below -

https://www.vw.com/en/models/atlas-c...3Fzip%3D%22%7D

Probably compete with Fortuner / Endeavor / Gloster with OTR north of Rs.40 lacs.

By any chance can it be the Nivus? I think that might find some takers in India

Atlas Cross Sport sits above Tiguan in the US.

Tiguan Allspace is already competing with Fortuner and Endeavour with its ex-showroom price of 33 lacs. If the car teased in the presentation is Atlas Cross Sport, I think it will be competing with BMW X1 and Audi Q2.

If they get the Taigun/T Cross to be a sub 4m SUV, then the Nivus would be a better proposition to be pitted against the Creta!

Great work PrasunBannerjee! I’m thinking this might be the second SUV, and it would be this one in the Creta/Seltos segment, and the Taigun in the Nexon-Sonet segment.

What’s more, the Nivus is made in a developing market (Brazil) like India, making it more economical too.

There's a space 45-55 Lac. With 2 Ltr. engine and under 40K USD, they can get at lower duties 60% as CBU. If Toyota can sell Fortuner at 40 Lac, am sure VW can well.

Here are the dimensions and comparisons, it's even longer, higher and about the same width as an X5.

Re: VW teases new SUV for India; could be Atlas Cross Sport

The presentation photo has the T-roc, the Tiguan (Allspace or not) and the Taigun.

So it's definitely not going to be a new version of the Tiguan.
Looks like an all-new model and the logic behind it could be testing the waters for what the market will accept and happily pay big money for.
Good way for the VW India management to offer something new without having to fully commit to it long term and at the same time do some vital market research for its future line up. The 2500 car no-homologation rule has been a real life saver for the VW group.

Although that being said, I would have loved it if they had decided to get something radically different like the Golf GTI for example.
If the intention is to get some eyeballs then a Golf GTI would do the trick and elevate the brand in the eyes of many enthusiasts.

For a non-enthusiast a big VW SUV will remain a just another big SUV costing big money. We have plenty of those. VW's non-flashy approach to car designs may also make the Atlas Cross look way too familiar to other VW SUVs.

45 lac INR OTR or ex-showroom? I made my previous posts considering the BHPians who said that this would (or rather, should) be priced south of 30 Lac OTR.

I doubt anyone would spend 5 million INR on a VW! The current Tiguan Allspace itself at ₹ 3 324 500 amounts to $ 45 355.

So I guess we would have to pay almost twice the cost in USD — about $ 60k = ₹ 4.4 million only as ex showroom. Fortuner ex-showroom is 3 Million INR (Legender - 3.7)

And that’s even more reason to believe that it won’t do well in India as a VW.

Wouldn’t Audi be the more capable brand to bring this to India?

Yes, it's most likely the 2021 Tiguan. It was launched in Europe a few months ago. I hope they launch it in india also with multiple engine options as am eagerly looking forward to this car. It would be interesting to see how VW price it though!

Re: VW teases new SUV for India; could be Atlas Cross Sport

Isn't that a Touareg? Aside from those squared out wheel arches, the split rear quarter glass panel and those chrome lines running at the corners of the front bumper, it looks identical. The car measures 4878mm.

https://www.volkswagen.co.nz/en/new-...F%2B%2F0%22%7D

At 90,000 NZD, that works out to almost 50lac in India. A bargain if VW can sell it at that price.
