Re: Fabric vs Leather upholstery

Could someone please compare the seats on the innova crysta (GX- Fabric, VX- premium fabric and ZX- leather)? Which one is the best suited for Delhi weather and long drives?

Re: Fabric vs Leather upholstery

Voted for fabric. They are more practical, easy to manage, comfortable in extreme weather conditions.

The debate for leather is akin to debate for wood panels and real aluminum inserts in the dashboard.

The day I can afford to buy the Phantom and have a chauffeur to take care of it, I will opt for wooden panels and leather seats.

Till then, gimme good quality fabric seats in black interiors, thank you very much!

My 2015 model Punto has all black fabric seats , looks fantastic and is very easy to maintain. I rarely feel the need to get it cleaned, I just vaccum whenever possible. Where as the beige fabric seats on my Bolero is a dirt magnet ( sweaty palms especially). So fabrics in darker shade preferably.

Re: Fabric vs Leather upholstery

I am wondering no one has yet mentioned another common choice- white towel seat covers over any kind of seats.
I think can be classified as fabric only (voted the same)
I prefer towel material covers - find them most comfortable and easiest to maintain- just remove & drop into washing machine.
Doesn't look very upmarket though.

P.S. make sure to check towel material's quality before buying. I bought online for Cedia from Autofurnish and they are of rubbish quality.
Had got locally from Mumbai for Innova in 2014 and are still holding up good.

Using regular bathroom towels (not made into covers) is terrible, keeps slipping all the time.

Voted for Fabric.
Most cars and after market seat covers are made of faux leather. Definitely it gives a rich and plush look but in practical in our hot and humid condition it becomes very uncomfortable specially if AC is not on. Getting pure leather is an expensive matter. Fabric is comfortable in all seasons. My first car had faux leather seats and since then me and my wife prefer fabric only.

Simply cannot bear the thought of being surrounded by dead animal skin in a closed environs of a car. Have read online that a mid-size car upholstery can require upto 4-6 calves/cows worth of skin. Luxury leather is sourced from lamb/sheep etc, that may require a much higher count.

Simply unbelievable, the kind of "shauk" (loosely translated as rich taste) that we humans have.

cheers

Apart from some exotic animals where the meat is not consumed, normal leather is a by product of meat industry, it goes waste otherwise.

I do not like leather for the reason that my back will start to sweat in our weather and in general good quality tan leather will not look nice in the modern cabin design.

Re: Fabric vs Leather upholstery

Fabric provided they are of good quality and colour. My old Punto had black seat covers which were very good, after almost 7 years I added leatherette seats which I didn't like much. My current Abarth Punto has good fabric covers all black, I would like to keep it that way as long as possible.

That's harsh. People like me who shun leather for ethical reasons, and those who shun it for religious reasons shouldn't be forced to get either leather seats or only low end cars.

Most people with fabric seats anyway visit an accessory shop and buy cheap artificial leather covers.

Re: Fabric vs Leather upholstery

Voted for Leather. Fabric is good but maintenance nightmare(Ertiga and Alto K10 with silly beige upholstery) and Art-leather is practical and easy on maintenance, however issue is with heating up/sweaty.

Found genuine leather to be more breathable. However I think the leather used in most of the mass segment cars is mix of leather+synthetic(non touch points)

Re: Fabric vs Leather upholstery

It depends on the car
Voted for Synthetic Leather
We have 2 cars in our home - Honda Brio with Beige fabric seats and Merc CLA with black leather seats
I would always prefer leather seats in a premium car. No doubt.
Our Honda brio is now 6 years old. And yes, it gets soiled easily but we have maintained it with extreme care and concern. (Touch wood) My heart shatters when it gets soiled even a little bit. If you love your car you’ll get it removed. Fact.
But I don’t want to get aftermarket leather seat cover for this car. Why?
One of my family members has Tata Nexon with fabric seats. He got aftermarket leather seat cover fitted.
Yes it looks really plush and luxurious from the outside, the moment you sit, you will realise.
What’s wrong ?
It’s very very slippery. It does not have thick side bolsters, and the seat base is not angled upwards. He was persuading me to get a leather seat cover for my car. For this particular reason , Nope.
Are all aftermarket leather seat covers slippery ?
Our Merc seats have OEM leather seats. But it is not slippery. Could it be due to thick side bolsters?
Does it have something to do with quality ?

Re: Fabric vs Leather upholstery

What about a Hybrid? Part fabric and part leather?

Fabric for the areas which will be in direct bodily contact - seat, backrest, front part of the headrest - while leather for the remaining parts of the seat. Theoretically, this should achieve the best of both worlds - soft and temperature neutral fabric for those sunny/winter days while retaining the plush look of leather.

Experts - would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Re: Fabric vs Leather upholstery

For our country's warm climate, fabric is my choice of material. Love the soft, cool and airy feel of fabric seats in the Altroz. The pattern design also looked quite premium for the car. But it is seemingly hard to maintain its clean fresh looks. For the sake of practicality, I had to cover it with leather since it's easier to maintain. My family has kids and also, the elders love to snack during long drives. No worries of spilled liquids or snacks even though it does get uncomfortable on long drives. It also helps in cleaning the car interiors fast. So my heart says fabric but my mind says leather.

Re: Fabric vs Leather upholstery

Voted for fabric since its the most comfortable. We had leather seats in our Accent and it always used to heat up and made me very uncomfortable. Even though maintaining fabric seats is difficult it does not absorb heat, leather seats are not eco-friendly, slippery and provide less grip and feedback to the driver and sensitive to weather extremities leaving them scalding hot during summers and freezing cold during winters.

The main disadvantage of a fabric is that it can aggravate allergies (cause allergens like pollen, mildew settle down on fabric seats).

Re: Fabric vs Leather upholstery

I still remember travelling in one of the office cab which had leatherette seats and getting all sweaty shirt thanks to hot and humid Chennai

I never liked the idea of leatherette seats and hence didn't opt for a seat cover change in my 2nd car.
Although there are many cool looking designs , it's never so cool to sit on them.
But pure leather seats does make the car look so premium.
