BS6 catalytic converters being stolen for precious metal dust!

According to a news report, a gang based in Gujarat has been stealing the catalytic converters of BS6 Maruti Eeco vans. Although there are conflicting reports, some of which say that they stole from cars at a dealer stockyard while some others say that they stole from cars parked at secluded areas.
Interesting to see that they had been specifically targeting Maruti Eeco as it was easy to remove the part from this particular model.
But it is indeed a matter of concern. Looks like after alloy wheels, ORVMS, logos and airbags (!), thieves have now realised that the metals found in catalytic converters like platinum and palladium have some good value in the black market.

These thefts are too common in UK & West (I read articles on web) & it seems to be evolving as an organised racket.

Wonder what'are the manufacturers doing to secure the exhaust components that are critical for emissions control & performance as well.

They're making them EVs.

Sorry, couldn't resist the OT post. Stealing a part for its raw material, rather than the part itself is rather new, at least in the Indian automobile context, isn't it?

Prius and other hybrid cars are prime targets as the catalyser are hardly contaminated since they are on battery power a lot. It is a big racket in the UK.

Here's another, this time from USA.

One of the reasons is explained in this video

Youtube is full of such videos. The problem is so rampant.

Re: BS6 catalytic converters being stolen for precious metal dust!

Catalytic converters definitely have precious metals. When my Maruti 800's exhaust needed to be replaced, I found it cheaper to just get a straight pipe done. It also passes the PUC norms for the car.

That said, people will always try to find ways to make a quick buck. As car owners, we will have to be more alert. First the music systems, then the alloy wheels and now this.

In the USA, LA's top prosecutor is threatening a fight with auto companies to force change.
