2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!

Total Car Sales - 2011 to 2020
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-1.-total-car-sales.png

  • 2020 has seen a total of 24,27,883 units in total which is a drop of ~5,10,000 units compared to 2019's total sales (-17.3%). This year hasn't been great for most of the manufacturer's except a few thanks to the Pandemic.

  • Even though the pandemic has created a lot of ripples in our lives, two and four wheeler purchases were almost as expected since people were not really confident enough to use public transport hence would have decided to get themselves an option for personal mobility for their own safety.

Yearly Sales Trends - All Manufacturers - 2020
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-screenshot_1.png

  • Three manufacturers who had a good run in 2020 were Kia, Morris Garages and Tata witnessing a jump in sales by 208.8%, 76.7% and 11.2% respectively.

  • Renault had the least drop in sales % compared to the rest followed by Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki.

Hatchback's - This is the major contributor in terms of sales. With 61% share in sales in 2011 has now dropped to 47-48% in 2020. All first time buyers or owners who want a second car (as a beater) at home still prefer getting hatchbacks. Dwellers in Metro cities majorly prefer getting hatchbacks too thanks to the crowded roads and poor availability of parking spaces.

Sedan's - Golden period was 2014-15 after which the drop was steady enough to settle down to 15% range. A dying segment and most of the 'to-be owners' are switching to SUV/C-SUV segment since that is the best keeping in the current scenario of the roads we have in our country. I don't think there is any chance for this segment to regain traction. In the coming years, this segment percentage contribution may drop further and stagnate somewhere around 10% is what I feel.

SUV's - Every manufacturer wants a share in this segment as it is considered the fiercest one of the lot and customers are spoilt for choices. Sedan and Hatchback category gave way to rise in sales of the SUV's thanks to poor roads/infrastructure which the sedans could not handle without possible repair bills to its owners. From 2011 to 2015 the graph was up from 5% to 11% after which it saw a sharp and consistent rise from 15% in 2016 to 23% as of 2020.

MUV's - Consistently performing segment that hasn't seen a sharp rise or decline since long. It is hovering between 14-15% on an average with major sales coming from the Taxi segment IMO.

2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-3.-datsun.jpg

Sales Trend
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-20a.-sales-trend-datsun-11-to19.png

  • The golden period for Datsun was in between 2016-2018 where their total sales were ~35,000 units in those years. Since then it has slid to a mere ~7,000 units in the whole of 2020. With just 3 cars on sale that too nothing great to write home about and hardly any dealership available, nothing much can be expected too.

  • Not sure how they are managing to pay bills and survive!! Spares availability is another question that is difficult to answer as not many in this segment change their cars often!
Model-wise sales
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-20.-datsun.png

  • Of the three cars, only RediGo has managed to sell in 4-digits by the end of 2020 whereas the rest two are sulking in 3-digit sales. 86.3% sales was contributed by the RediGo.

2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-4.-fiat.jpg

Sales Trend
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-21a.-sales-trend-fiat-11-to19.png

  • The graph is just in a zig-zag pattern YoY. The Jeep Compass is the only one they have that contributes 99.7% of the sales in 2020 and balance 0.3% by the Wrangler.

  • Get the Jeep Compass off the list and Fiat is history in India. They were happy selling engines to Maruti, Tata and Chevrolet i.e. 1.3L MJD (main cash cow) and never cared about their own cars but due to enforcement of the BS6 regulations that engine sales also has stopped leaving them high and dry. Currently, their 'engine-only customers' are Tata (Harrier) and MG (Hector) for the 2.0L MJD.

  • Not sure why can't they launch cars that they sell abroad that has a pretty good repute?! Not that the cars they sold in India were bad but it was the attitude towards the Indian market is what I find poor that needs to change ASAP if they want to serve customers here. Jeep Compass alone cannot help them pay bills, something strong needs to come to our shores too.

Model-wise Sales
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-21.-fiat.png

  • Linea and Punto were great cars for that period (except for ergonomics for some owners) and whoever has had them in their garages are happy and finding it difficult to get a proper replacement now. The overall lack in terms of market study and new product launches, Fiat in India just couldn't survive the competition.

  • Jeep Compass - Failing to hold onto the sales it used to do and is on a steady decline, loss of ~50% sales compared to 2019. Peak sales were achieved in 18,000+ units in 2018 to just 5,000+ units in 2020.

  • Fiat needs something genuinely solid enough to help them sustain in India else it is Bye-Bye like GM. I so want this company to survive so we can get great engines + solidly built cars that handle very well.

Sales Trend
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-22a.-sales-trend-ford-11-to19.png

  • Another manufacturer that is slogging a model which is old now but just decides to keep it alive by giving it multiple refreshes! Years 2011 to 2018 were sort of consistent for Ford in terms of sales and the graph was almost flat but the years 2019 and 2020 have been bad. The drop in numbers is sharp i.e. ~20,000 units loss per year closing the tally at 45,800 units.

Model-wise Sales
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-22.-ford.png

  • 3 cars i.e. EcoSport, Freestyle and Endeavour are the ones getting Ford some numbers to stay in the market. With sales contribution percentages at 59.3%, 13.8% and 12.0% respectively.

  • EcoSport - The year 2013 was when this car came into the market and has been a phenomenal seller for the manufacturer. Being such an old model many prefer getting this and also IIRC the EcoSport is one the most recommended cars in its segment/budget in the "What Car?" section. An 'all-rounder' I can say (barring the harsh ride)! Will be difficult for Ford to get a genuine replacement that can fill in the shoes of the EcoSport.

  • Freestyle and Endeavour are the other two models that see some respectable sales in 4-digits but the drop in sales for Freestyle is sad since it is genuinely a capable car just that it couldn't establish well in the market. Endeavour has been a consistent seller year-on-year since 2016 pushing 6,000-6,500 units a year, respectable for that price in its segment.

  • Figo - Just couldn't click well in the market even after so many refreshes. A 'dual-personality car' (in a good sense) is what I feel the current generation Figo is (especially the 'S' variant)! Can be a normal family car and at the same time can turn into an FTD car. . A frugal engine that performs well as well as returns decent FE too.

  • Fiesta - The "Fiesta Classic" model was the best. Post that it just couldn't sell enough where Ford decided to pull the trigger. Ford has anyway given up on the sedan market so no more cars from them in this segment anyway.
  • Reasons I feel that isn't helping Ford in India are:
  1. The feature addition/deletion process that they have every 6 months like some 'Management Review' is hurting the public and their image. Ford India stop this ASAP!

  2. Ford leaving India and getting into a JV with Mahindra also made people wary to buy their cars since they were not sure what was in store for them in the coming months/years. Since the JV has not happened, hope 2021 will see some improvement and Ford starts to get their act together if they want to serve the Indian market.

  3. Needs a product refresh, proper one and since Ford makes great cars, why can't they get in some cars which are best-sellers in the abroad markets?! I am sure Ford India's management knows what the public wants and they do have the cars that can address the same.

re: 2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!

2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-7.-honda.jpg

Sales Trend
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-24.-sales-trend-honda-11-to19.png

  • What Honda was and what Honda has become now. Sad! Years 2014 to 2018 were their peak seasons except for a small drop in 2016 on average sales were floating around 1,80,000 units per year but now it is down to ~75,000 units. At this rate, Honda will reach to a level where it what in 2011.

  • Amaze, City, WR-V and Jazz contribute 53.1%, 30.9%, 9.3% and 4.6% in the total 2020 sales respectively.

Model-wise Sales
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-24.-honda.png

  • Greatest cars ever launched Honda City, Civic, Jazz. Great cars for their respective segments but never could manage to survive the onslaught from their competitors. Amaze, City and WR-V are the ones that are performing for Honda and helping them in holding their share in the market. 2014 and 2015 were years where the share reached a max of 7% but from then it slid to 6% in 2018 and 2019 and then currently sitting at 3%. Sad!

  • The Amaze was a consistent seller ~60,000 units a year since launch except for 2016 & 2017 where it dropped to ~35,000 & 28,000 units respectively. Again the drop has been witnessed in 2020 to ~37,000 units. Same is the story for Honda City also. Once upon a time, this car was a market leader with consistent sales maintaining ~55,000+ units a year from 2014 to 2017 after which the drop began and is hovering around 20,000 units. Hopefully, the new City should get in some number for Honda in 2021.

  • Jazz and WRV were also strong performers in the years they were launched but could sustain the peaks for a year after that then on the fall began. CRV and Civic were iconic but have gone off the market now thanks to Honda's decision to discontinue them after launching their latest generations in India in 2019.

  • Also, the closure of their manufacturing unit also doesn't help in building confidence in the minds of the public since the feel is that Honda might stop the Indian operations and wind-up any moment.

re: 2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!

Sales Trend
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-25a.-sales-trend-hyundai-11-to19.png

  • India's second-largest seller and market-share holder have witnessed a drop of ~86,000 units from 2019 standing at a total of 4.23 lakh units in 2020. Hyundai has been maintaining a standard market share % between 16-17% since 2014.

  • Major contributors were Creta (22.9%), Grand i10 (21.7%), Venue (19.5%) and Elite i20 (17.3%) in the total sales that happened in 2020.

  • 4 entries out of 20 in the 'Top 20' list are from Hyundai. Nothing great in front of what Maruti Suzuki has.

Model-wise Sales
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-25.-hyundai.png

  • None of the cars except Venue and Xcent have registered a positive sales in 2020 compared to the numbers in 2019. Creta has seen an overall drop by 2.75% sales compared to 2019 whereas the highest drop was shown by Santro at 58.7%. Top 3 best seller for 2020 has been held by Creta (96,898 units), Grand i10 (91,930 units) and Venue (82,428 units).

  • Hatchbacks are also a strong point for Hyundai except for B1 segment which is held by Santro. Post the model refresh, sales were at its high in 2019, but 2020 hardly saw any sales which is surprising as it couldn't connect well with the market since Maruti Suzuki has a powerful contender and leader in this segment, i.e. the WagonR that is unbeatable in terms of sales.

  • In the Sedan segment i.e. Xcent, Verna and Elantra, only positive growth was observed by Xcent by 89.13% compared to 2019 whereas Verna and Elantra witnessed a drop by 48% and 58.66% respectively. I attribute this majorly since the 'sedan' segment itself is losing sales to SUV segment also Hyundai doesn't have a good hold in segments above C2.

  • Hyundai could move 223 Kona's off the dealership floor in 2020, a drop of 23% compared to 2019. A capable car but pricey IMHO, a bit of price correction should help this car garner sales.

  • Off-late there have been a lot of complaints from the cars rolled out by Hyundai. They need to focus and get the quality control tightened at the plant level including their suppliers. The masses can't accept niggles that even get carry-forwarded to the next generations of cars including their sister-brand!

2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-9.-kia.jpg

Sales Trend
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-26a.-sales-trend-kia-11-to19.png

  • Every MBA case study should be done on Kia's entry into India. The sales that Kia has managed in 2020 are great since they have two cars in the mass-selling segment whereas the third is on the premium side. An overall 4% jump in market share from 2019 is laudable. Kia Seltos which is the star performer has seen a Y-o-Y growth of 113%. Kia's sales graph is a delight to see especially a jump of almost a lakh units in 2020 compared to 2019 is fantastic. Hope it keeps maintaining the numbers high even in 2021 provided no QC issues/Braking issues arise as a surprise.

Model-wise Sales
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-26.-kia.png

  • Standing at 96,932 units, the sales run for Seltos has been phenomenal even when the number of dealerships is very less compared to Hyundai/Maruti/Tata. The Seltos contributes almost 69% of the total sales that Kia has managed. These guys could read and understand what the public was looking for and with the help in the background by Hyundai's management, Kia could witness numbers that no other manufacturer could in its initial days.

  • Sonet, their latest offering in the mass segment which was launched in the month of September 2020 is also looking to be a great success clicking around ~38,000 units in total in 2020. This model contributes 27.3% of sales in 2020 for Kia.

  • Carnival their third offering placed in the D2 segment has been a consistent seller around 250 units a month post corona lock-down and looks to be stabilizing around 300+ units a month contributing 3.7% sales for Kia in their 3-car portfolio.

  • Hope Kia reads through the minds of the public and keeps the genuine focus on QA/QC at their plants and supplier so they aren't plagued by issues like Engine mounts issues or Braking issues. The initial impression that Kia has managed to bring-in will be easily tarnished if such cases increase and no genuine action is taken.

Sales Trend
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-27a.-sales-trend-mahindra-11-to19.png
  • One of the Top-5 manufacturers in India fighting fiercely for the market share currently and is one of the few manufacturers who understand that the Indian public too 'needs' safer cars and is sincerely working towards that and it shows since the market is responding well to their efforts. Holds a 5.62% market share that is just below Kia which is at 5.79%. Overall dip in numbers by ~83,000 units compared to 2019. Not a great year for Mahindra as there is only one positive performer in 2020 i.e. Thar whereas the rest is badly dropping.

Model-wise Sales
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-27.-mahindra.png
  • Being a majorly diesel dominated portfolio, Mahindra needs to focus on petrol-powered ones that are frugal. Major contributions in sales in 2020 were by Bolero (38.7%); XUV3OO (23.6%) and Scorpio (22.9%) but the YoY movement for these cars is on the negative side (~average drop of 25% each).

  • XUV5OO was a great seller otherwise but due to the new model that is around the corner has seen poor sales in 2020 (a drop of 59%).

  • Thar - Latest kid on the block and is back with a bang and a lot safer too. With AT available, the acceptance factor has gone up by folds. Mahindra may not be able to produce and meet the demands that the Thar has generated.

  • Marazzo & TUV3OO - One of the two cars that have seen the sharpest drop in sales compared to the rest (average drop was in the tune of 80% compared to 2019 figures).

  • Bolero - Great seller for Mahindra maintaining the numbers pretty well. A cash cow for Mahindra and can't afford to lose this segment for them.

  • Scorpio - Another consistent seller witnessing a drop in numbers by 33%. Thanks to the roads in Tier-2 and 3 cities, Scorpio and Bolero are preferred to be picked up for the ruggedness and abuse friendly nature that these two cars hold. Scorpio has a different butch look that many buy and modify with large 18-20" wheels

  • Xylo - People mover (Taxi segment), couldn't hold well at all in 2020 showing a drop of 98% compared to 2019. Not sure what Mahindra will do to this model.

  • Mahindra needs the XUV 5OO to be a success to hold onto this position else it'll drop down further. XUV 3OO, Marazzo, and TUV 3OO need a look into from the management to get them moving off the floors.

  • IMHO it shall be great for Mahindra to stop this process of buying companies that are closing down, retain them for a year, and then sell them off. Rather than doing this, focus that energy on their cars and market demands (reliability and consistency).

2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-28a.-sales-trend-maruti-11-to19.png
  • India's largest car manufacturer and market-share holder for years together. From a market share of 41% in 2011, the peak share was observed in 2018 at 52%. Currently, it has dropped by 2% in 2020. Total sales of 12.13 lakh units in 2020 is a feat in itself. Maruti does know what the public wants and those cars just sell come what may.

  • Critical performers for Maruti are Alto, WagonR, Swift, Baleno and Dzire contributing 12.7, 12.2%, 13.2%, 12.7% and 10.3% respectively of the total sales that Maruti achieved in 2020. Brezza (6.9%) and Ertiga/XL6 (8.6%) are not far behind than the rest in terms of contribution.

  • Of the 20 entries in the 'Top 20' list, 10 positions are occupied by Maruti Suzuki which itself speaks how well our public swears by Maruti Suzuki.

Model-wise Sales
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-28.-maruti-suzuki.png

  • Alto & S-Presso - Bread and butter car for India, especially for the first time car buyers and also families who look for cars as 'beater' ones living in Metros, will love the compact nature of the car and parking friendly nature helps it move off the showroom floors. Totalling 1.54 lakh units in 2020, this car alone holds 6.3% share in total car sales in 2020. A-segment is one of the most bought of the lot and the other strong positive performer which Maruti has launched is the 'S-Presso'. YoY performance is phenomenal standing at 92% jump over 2019, final standings were ~68,000 units. I feel Maruti will slowly discontinue the Alto and keep the S-Presso as a replacement.

  • WagonR & Celerio - Looking at the figures of WagonR, it is clearly the undisputed leader of the segment which comprises of the Celerio, Santro and Tiago. WagonR alone sells the combined figures of these cars if totalled, impressive! A perfect city-runabout car and middle-class family is happy getting one. Won't win beauty contests but does the job in comfort and with the addition of the K12M engine to its lineup, the sales have been stronger for the WagonR. Celerio on the other hand is chugging along mainly in the Taxi segment which is a major source of numbers for Maruti.

  • Swift/Baleno - Best sellers again by Maruti in this segment holding 1.7+ lakh units consistently YoY except for a drop in 2020 loosing 16% sales each on both cars. Thanks to CVT in the Baleno, the sales hold well and AMT in Swift are another helping factors for owners dwelling in cities who are looking for these cars as secondary at home. Each of these two cars contributes 6.5% each in the total car sales in 2020.

  • Dzire - Destroys the segment by a great margin - 1.25 lakh units in 2020. The next nearest selling cars in this segment are Honda Amaze (37,484 units) and Xcent (36,341 units) which shows how hard the other manufacturers must work to reach what the Dzire has reached today.

  • Vitara Brezza - Safest Maruti in the lineup (excluding S-Cross) that has a good following pushing ~84,000 units in 2020, drop of 34% YoY as compared to 2019 and contributes 6.9% sales of Maruti in 2020.

  • Ertiga/XL6 - Another jackpot that Maruti has in their hands since the other people mover that sells is Innova Crysta or the Marazzo. None of these models sells at this scale which is a consistent 1 lakh+ units in both 2019 and 2020. I can see these numbers go up further once Maruti wakes up and gives the Ertiga a diesel-heart. The taxi segment needs one desperately as Marazzo or Crysta is their only current choice. YoY drop was just 3.8%

  • Eeco - Utility segment where the car is pretty popular with a cumulative sales of 99,480 units in 2020 losing ~13% sales compared to 2019. This is the one that has replaced the Omni IIRC. This car alone contributes to 4.1% of the total car sales in 2020 and 8.2% of total sales that Maruti could manage in 2020.

  • S-Cross - Medium performer for Maruti sitting in Nexa. One of the better-built, spacious cars in their portfolio. This car begs the attention of the management for some changes that help achieve some good numbers otherwise capable of. 4-speed AT in 2020 that too in a 'premium' showroom doesn't actually give that feeling IMHO.

Sales Trend
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-29a.-sales-trend-mg-11-to19.png

  • Sitting in the Top-10 manufacturer's w.r.t sales and market share (1%) with just 3 models on sale out of which Hector is the model that sells for them bringing all the cash into their register. Hector sales contribute to 1.1% of the total sales in 2020. Of the three cars on sale, one is EV and rest two are ICE-powdered. The graph is on the rise just like Kia's. Gaining 15K units sale over 2019 totalling the tally at 28,162 units for 2020.

  • Hector - Impressive YoY jump of ~63% over 2019, thanks to the launch of the Hector Plus model and overall features that the car offers versus competition is getting some decent traction. The only other D1 segment SUV that has sold well after the Hector is Tata's Harrier and Mahindra's XUV 5OO. Hector contributes to 92% sales of MG in 2020 (obviously!).

  • Gloster - Freshly launched in the Indian market during the month of November has seen a total dispatch of 1,085 units. Time will tell if this SUV can stand against the might Endeavour & Fortuner in terms of sales and overall acceptance.

  • ZS EV - Should be a decent seller for MG once the charging infrastructure develops in India. 1,142 units in 2020 is what the car could manage since its launch.

  • Nothing much to write for this manufacturer. That downward graph is every manufacturer's fear. They just have 2 cars on sale Kicks and newly launched Magnite.

Model-wise Sales

  • The only model i.e. Kicks has somehow managed to get some numbers for Nissan and this manufacturer has pinned a lot of hopes on the Magnite to get them cover some lost ground. As of now, Nissan has shipped out 560 units of the same to all their dealership. Hope the number rises a lot in the coming months and holds up to the pressure/test of time.

  • Again another 3-car only manufacturer surviving due to a MUV and A-segment city car. Not sure what they will be doing regarding the Duster in India. It is just chugging along dropping sales MoM.

Model-wise Sales
2020 Report Card - Annual Indian Car Sales & Analysis!-31.-renault.png
  • Triber and Kwid are two cars that are getting Renault some numbers. Both these cars have found ~38,000 homes each. triber has seen a 61% YoY growth whereas the Kwid saw a 29% drop YoY. The Duster on the other hand has fallen down 59% YoY closing the year with 3,680 units of sale.

  • The management needs to wake up quick or wind up their operations soon.
