Re: November 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis After the bumper festive season, the automotive sector sees a patchy November, in terms of sales/dispatches. Though the sector recovery is fast enough, is yet to come out of the woods bringing back negativity to dotting double-digit.
A mixed bag of fortunes for the manufacturers. Hyundai, Kia, Tata Motors, Mahindra and Mahindra, Toyota and Honda see growth, while Maruti sees a drop of 2% in the domestic market. Ford and Nissan were the prominent losers.
After a 19.6% YoY growth in Aug, 31.14% growth in Sep’20 and 17.5% growth in Oct’20– the industry has registered a 8.8% YoY growth in Nov’20. But to be noted that the growth has now tapered down below 10% even during the Diwali month. This indicates that the OEMs reduced pushing inventory to its dealer partners as the year end approaches. The real test shall be the next 3 months to conclude if the industry will have a sustained growth.
All manufacturers barring MG and Nissan, sees a negative M-O-M growth.
The industry is optimistic about 2021 with lots of promising launches and could bring about disruptions in the segment. Highlights of Nov-20 dispatch figures:
- Tata Motors grew a phenomenal 108% YoY and the growth was one of the highest in the Industry. Tata Motors also recorded a Market Share growth in Nov’’20 (it jumped from 4.0% in Nov’19 to 7.5% in Nov’20).
- Kia Motors India volumes shot up and is in a neck-neck race for the 3rd position. Kia also was able to project a 50 % YoY growth which helped its market share increase @ 7.3%. Kia also was able to project one the highest YoY growth in the Indian market which helped its market share increase by 2%.
- The Market Leader Maruti Suzuki registered a -2% YoY de-growth and lost the highest Market Share.
- Even though Hyundai dispatches were effected due to Cyclone Nivar; it was able to grow a moderate 9.4% YoY and held to its Market Share.
- MG recorded its all-time highest volumes! Its YoY growth was a stellar 27.3% and overtook Ford in Nov Fastest Growing segment – Compact SUV
- Compact SUV grew a 41% YoY backed by strong volumes of Sonet & Venue.
- Compact SUV segment which ranked fourth in Aug’20; shot up to be the country’s second largest segment in Sep’20 ,Oct’20 and Nov’20 as well.
- Premium Hatchback segment overtook the Mid SUVs and was the third largest segment Top Manufactures for the Month: Maruti Suzuki
- Retains top 5 slots in the 10 best sellers for August and holds 7 positions in the top 10.
- Maruti’s Swift superseded Alto to become the bestselling car for both OEM and the Nation.. It is the fourth month in succession that Swift overtook Alto.Baleno too outsold Alto and jumped to the second spot. It recorded a mammoth 35% YoY growth. Also note that rebadged Toyota Glanza sold 2,428 units – the combined Baleno+Glanza sales shall be 20,300 units!
- Wagon-R was the third best-selling car in Maruti’s portfolio. There is a spike seen in the sales of entry level cars and Alto/Wagon-R sales are a testimony for it.
- Alto slipped to the fourth position and was 853 units and has a 2%t YoY growth
- Dzire was one of the Maruti models to post a de-growth as well – drop is obviously due discontinuation of diesel variant.
- Ciaz seems to be outdated in front of the New City & Verna, drops 40 % in growth.
- In the completive CUV segment, Brezza slips in numbers. Kia Sonet and the Urban Cruiser effect. With Urban Cruiser combined the numbers are an impressive 10670. Hyundai:
- Hyundai dispatched 48,800 units in November 2020 and registered a YoY growth of 9% & MoM volumes fell by -14%. This is the highest volumes Hyundai has recorded in any November till date.
- Creta was the best seller for Hyundai and contributed to almost 25% of Hyundai’s sales in November 2020! The model also emerged as India’s best-selling SUV for the month.
- Worrisome for Hyundai should be the numbers for the newly launched i20. The Newly launched i20 saw a dip of -13% in YoY volumes. Considered overpriced and quality levels not matching the price, Tata Altroz would be looking to dethrone the hatch from its current position.
- Santro is another product with hyped launch and dismal monthly sales. Not able to encash on the growth levels witnessed in this segment.
- Compact SUV Venue ranked third for the OEM and around 9,265 units were dispatched in November 2020 and ranks 2 in this segment.
