Skoda opens bookings for Rapid 1.0 TSI Automatic

Skoda has started accepting bookings for the upcoming Rapid Automatic. The booking amount is set at Rs. 25,000, which is refundable with a cancellation charge of Rs. 3,000.

Those who wish to book the car can do so at any Skoda dealership across India or online on Skoda's website. Skoda plans to deliver these pre-booked cars to customers from September 18, 2020.

The Rapid AT will be powered by the same 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine as the Rapid MT, which was launched in May 2020. This 999cc, 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine develops 109 BHP @ 5,000 – 5,500 rpm and 175 Nm @ 1,750 – 4,000 rpm. It is mated to a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The claimed fuel efficiency of the Rapid AT is 16.24 km/l.

Compared to the 1.6 MPI engine of the outgoing car, the 1.0 TSI offers a 5% upsurge in power and a 14% rise in torque output. Skoda also claims a 9% increase in fuel efficiency against the previous motor.

Re: Skoda opens bookings for Rapid 1.0 TSI Automatic

Any directional sense on the pricing of the TC AT - esp. given the DSG box was costly and hence saw lack of sales/bookings? Also, is the Rider/+ variant also coming with AT? That is what will define the sales IMO. thanks!

Re: Skoda opens bookings for Rapid 1.0 TSI Automatic

Its a TC unit if I am not wrong, certainly a lot behind the DSG in old Skoda cars. When I test drove the Karoq while getting the Octavia serviced it was fun "Almost as much as my Octavia 1.8" because of its DSG and that small footprint.

Yes, as per SA automatic will come in Rider. It's not sure whether its Rider or Rider+. Rider and Ambition will be first set of vehicles coming in as test ride cars. Test ride cars dispatch will happen by month end.
Also, SA told that AT will be priced very competitively. I am expecting one of the autobox variant to have ex showroom of 9.99L.

Edit: Variants with AT are clear from the booking page.

So, AT will be available in all variants except base Rider.

25K booking amount with 3K cancellation charges. They really need to price the Rider Plus < 999K!

Re: Skoda opens bookings for Rapid 1.0 TSI Automatic

Very good news.

When I drove one, I found it absolutely fantastic, except for the long clutch travel and initial lag. Autobox should take care of both these things.

Hope its priced as sensibly as the manual variant.

The price should be around 8.99 lacs for the rider plus A/T as the manual variant is priced at 7.99 lacs. They can't charge more than 1 lac rupee premium for the auto box that too on a product which is a decade old.

I would bet they will price the Rider plus AT at 8.99 lakhs or less. This is an old TC box that appeared in the vento in 2011, there is no way to justify a price premium of anything more than 1 lakh over the manual. The Rider plus manual sells at 7.99 lakhs. With this car they are recycling everything from the old parts bin except for the engine, so they should be able to make a decent profit at that price point.

Re: Skoda opens bookings for Rapid 1.0 TSI Automatic

Wow!
Just when the Rider was already an irresistible offering from Skoda. The only thing that still stopped me from getting one, was no availability of dsg. So I thought to wait for a while and finally it's coming now (although with a torque convertor AT and in rider plus but still will be a great option for me, if Skoda price it right). Guess Skoda is playing their cards quite well now.

Re: Skoda opens bookings for Rapid 1.0 TSI Automatic

The BS4 Rapid had Hill Hold control on AT and Electronic Stability Control on Diesel AT. Rapid did not have AT option on the lower Active variant then. Now, considering that Skoda is launching AT in Rider plus and with no diesel across, it would be interesting to see how Skoda is going to place these two features across the AT variants in Rapid.

Re: Skoda opens bookings for Rapid 1.0 TSI Automatic

Going by the price difference of the Vento Highline plus MT vs Highline Plus AT and the Polo MT vs AT the price difference between the manual and the auto box is close to 1.2lacs.
Rapid Rider plus AT at 8.99-9.10lacs ex showroom would be a killer deal and would make it India's most affordable petrol car equipped with a Torque converter gearbox.

Will surely be a case of the engine being superior to the transmission! This is an old gearbox. That said, it won't be a bad choice to own. While the DSG is so much faster, they are still unreliable. Better to go with something tried & tested.

We'll be reviewing this variant .

Re: Skoda opens bookings for Rapid 1.0 TSI Automatic

#PRNDS

I like the look of it a lot! A turbo petrol coupled with a torque converter with a sports mode. That I think is the perfect drive train for our roads. A TC unit obviously gives a level of smoothness in shifts that is lacking for a AMT or even a dual clutch. Yes, its sacrilege to talk about AMT & a dual clutch in the same sentence, but at parking speeds, the later is sometimes as clumsy as the former.

And torque converter doesn't have the rubber banding effect of a CVT, instead it really helps the engine with torque multiplication at low rpm. If VAG tunes this transmission well, for fun with a capital F, this could be the beginning of an exciting chapter for turbo petrol AT over here! And did I say it was bullet proof?

Skoda is really on a roll! A slight glimmer of hope for the small number of folks who doesn't treat driving as a chore and needs a FUN car from the mass market! Well done! I really hope the larger public doesn't mess this up and there is sufficient volume! Else, we will be stuck in the world of archaic, lackluster 4 speed AT until kingdom come.

PS: I really don't like guessing the ex-showroom price before a launch. But, I have a feeling that Rider Plus AT will retail for slightly less than 8.99. They pleasantly surprised all of us a few months back and there is further scope due to economies of scale with the transmission here.

Re: Skoda opens bookings for Rapid 1.0 TSI Automatic

Interesting. It’s back to the original gearbox of the Rapid and Vento - which was used with the 1.6 l NA engine. At least in my Vento, I find the gearbox decent - not Superb DSG quick, but far better than the Torque Converters that came with the old Honda City or Hyundai Verna. And I guess the better reliability and lower price will be an advantage as well.
