Re: Car tints banned by HC! EDIT: Supreme Court bans all kinds of sunfilms in cars

Quite a circus at the Himachal Bhawan roundabout at around noon today. 10-12 cars had been stopped and the films were being removed , news vans from most major channels present and interviewing the cops as well as the drivers of the respective cars.

Re: Front windscreen sunfilm?

Regarding the ruling, well, that is just another in the thousands of the ones which have been passed earlier and gathering dust. India is a land or irony, and its so blatent and common that we don't get bothered by it. On the contrary, adherance to the law is an exception. A mere walk on the street is enough for anyone to understand the effectiveness of the term 'law' in this country. And, I am not criticizing, I have learnt to live with it, and so have the millions around me. The absence of law is the law here.

I am very sure that the latest will have 0 effect. The only impact it may have is to provide additional avenue to satisfy the greed within the relevant government department and aid corruption. Be prepared to grease money to cops whenever they stop you citing this new ruling. And looking at the number of cars on the streets which are already 'in-violation', believe me the greasing would be very light. It would have been better if the hournable entity had also listed out the penalty. And the reason it has not been done goes back to my initial statement about 'land of irony'.

Was just wondering if the 'ruling' would apply to buses. It won't I assume since most of that is already run by the rulers :-)
And, I am sure that the hournable entity would also want some statitics to check the implementation of the latest ruling, or would they move on to more important topics which affect this where half of its people go hungry every night.

Now I have one stupid query, Will Gurgaon cops stop my Delhi registered car? If yes then Can I escape the 1000 rupee fine by telling them that I am a visitor and not a resident? I know there are 'N' numbers of DL cars in Gurgaon and vice versa!

Quoting from this page
Dont think that this excuse will save you a challan.I saw HR registered cars being challaned in Delhi today. Also i have been stopped numerous times by Gurgaon police for dark tints on my DL registered car. They have the authority to challan out of state cars too.In case your side and rear tints are darker than 50% then removing them is advisable.Else you could use public transport for a while and see if in case this rule gets reversed.

Gurgaon members will understand what I'm getting at here.

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but what is the difference between manufacturer putting in tint inside the glass as OEM, versus us doing the same after-market? After all, VLT is the same whichever way.

when they say manufacturer tint, i guess they are referring to default tint on car window which is about 30%. I am not sure if any of the cars come with default tint provided by manufacturer. Are there any?

OT:

I guess we should be careful while discussing this matter since its a decision by Supreme court, certain decorum should be followed while discussing about the judgement given.

As far as bangalore is concerned I am seeing almost all the cars are heavily tinted and plying on the roads.90% of the people are not even aware of such a ruling by the SC of india. And if Gurgaon cops are charging INR1000 fine then bangalore which leads in everything as far as taxes and fines are concerned we can easily expect a INR 2000 fine as the first punishment.

Sorry for venting my frustration but had to let go somehow.

Quite a few manufacturers put a default tint in the glasses, but I don't know the VLT percentages. In any case, the ruling allows upto 70% (front/back) and 50% (sides) as OEM.

Not certain I know what you mean, but both my VWs (Golf 20 years ago and Polo now) have had a slight green tint. It is so slight it is hard to see if you don't know it is there, but if compared with clear glass it is obvious.

I didn't realise my Gold even had a tint, until I had to replace a thief-smashed glass. The fitter showed me. I had asked for plain glass. He said that lots of people make the same mistake, so he always carries the green one as well.

This means Hon'ble court wants us to maintain OEM fittings in very simple words.

I removed the film today morning before leaving for work, residual gum is on all the glasses and needs to be taken care of over the weekend.

Re: Car tints banned by HC! EDIT: Supreme Court bans all kinds of sunfilms in cars

I just had a quick look around in the parking lot where I live. Found that most Chevrolet cars have a stock tint on them. My 8 year old Optra has tints all around with 70% VLT. A Chevrolet Beat that belongs to a fellow upstairs also has stock 75% VLT tints.

The windows/front and rear windscreen on my Optra have really dark tints from 3M. But I feel that even after their removal, the stock tints will still feel like aftermarket. I do not know how to convince the traffic police about that.

Anyone from Hyderabad came across any police checks today?
Took the stretch from Lingampally to hitec city today evening around 5:45, and didn't come across any cops checking for the sunfilms.
I guess they are waiting for the weekend to avoid the traffic jam build-up on a working day because of this.

Re: Car tints banned by HC! EDIT: Supreme Court bans all kinds of sunfilms in cars

Saw a few cops checking vehicles at the St John's - IRR Jn on the IRR side.

Seems they were stopping only cars with reflective tints e.g. the silvery ones. I have RE35 and was not stopped.

I am in no hurry to remove my tints. Have a few scratches & bubbles on them after 3 years of abuse. if the Cops force me to remove, I would be glad to part ways with those. Until then, why waste my effort & time & money.

So guys, what is your suggestion?

Should I get the films removed from my car? If yes, only sides and rear (RE35) or Front (CR70) also?

I am in Gurgaon (Rs.1,000/- zone) and can manage not to take out my car till Sunday.
