Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

When oh when will the darn TA 65 be abandoned, I fear the altroz turbo will be plagued with the same drivability issues the JTP has.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

~140 Nm looks a little meager compared to the size of the car and the build itself makes me think whether the amount of torque is sufficient to make the car feel powerful as expected? Power to weight ratio is something that I'm having my doubts on. Will reserve further comments post the detailed review of the engine from the forum.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

Don't you think the 140Nm is a bit too less for this car in this revised avatar of Turbo Petrol?

I have driven the Altoz diesel and I believe the 200 Nm torque from the diesel engine was just right in Altroz.

Altroz is indeed a very heavy and solid car. I have a feeling this can't match the Polo TSI in terms of performance. That TSI motor in Polo whether in Manual / Auto is an exiciting one to drive. Especially when considering these are rival products, I feel Tata should have given slightly more power to this turbo petrol version.

Looks are subjective, and in my opinion both Polo & Altroz are good looking cars. Again, Altorz is a much newer car with a LOT of SPACE compared to Polo and of course TATA cars are exceptionally cheaper to maintain than VW. Even their service intervals are same with 1 year/ 15000 Kms. (But Tata cars have a 6months/7500 kms check up in the middle).

Probably with an addition of the auto box, TATA could pull a lot of potential customers aiming for POLO TSI MT/AT towards the Altroz Turbo Petrol MT/AT.

Tata Altroz Production Crosses 25,000 Units Milestone In 8 Months

Source: Rushlane

Quote:
In a significant milestone for Altroz, the 25,000th unit has been rolled out from the plant. Considering production started in Jan 2020, and the milestone was achieved a few days ago in Sep, it took around 9 months for Altroz production to cross 25,000 units. But, as we know that production was stopped for more than a month due to nation wide lockdown; it actually took around 8 months for Altroz to reach this production milestone.

In August 2020, Altroz was the third bestselling premium hatch with sales of 4,941 units. Its market share for the month was 18.21%.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

Nexon XE starts at 6.99 if I am not wrong. Altroz turbo petrol with considerably lesser torque starting at 7.99? Am I missing something here? Maybe they are not launching turbo petrol Altroz in lower variants. I wish they do! More power to the consumer.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

Considering that CVTs are boring and AMTs are 'cop out' automatics at best, launching a Turbo-petrol Altroz with a DCT will put it in a special place in the industry.

The only other real competition to it in the 'automatic hatchback space' will be the Polo TSI. No good? The 40L Mini Cooper is your only other option.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

For all those who are worried about the paper specs like only 140nm of torque, I drive an Aspire DCT with exact same power figures, 110bhp and 140nm torque. It depends on the guy behind the wheel, what to do with all the power vested on him. Aspire DCT can achieve very high speeds and easily match most cars on Indian roads. I haven’t felt the need for more power to be honest unless you are at a traffic stop and have a nut case with a luxury car who wants to race! For all other practical scenarios, it’s difficult to outrun it if you are determined. So Altroz will be as good in those terms, but would up the ante with a more solid build and 5* safety.

If you are going to buy solely based on power figures, no need to test drive any car, just open an Excel sheet and put in the desired values and buy the one with the highest power/torque figures, but that’s not how it will turn out in real life. I rejected the Vento TSI solely based on how the steering feedback felt, nothing were a match for someone used to Ford's steering. Even the average build hasn't affected me, every single time I drive it around a sweeping curve, it brings a wide to my face! So please approach the Altroz with an open mind, I definitely am going to seriously consider Altroz DCT as my 'upgrade'! I hope it lives up to my expectations, if not I will have to spend serious money and that too in buying a 'pre worshipped' car like the 3 series. I'm sure there would be so many Ford loyalists in a predicament like mine.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

Recently I test drove the nexon petrol 1.2L turbo charged 3 cylinder car. Honestly speaking TATA badly needs to work on the quality of items used in making the car, the interiors are good, but the engine bay has plenty of crude edges that can cause painful cuts when working or cleaning, not just that, the engine mounts already had surface rust on them.

If the Altroz is anything similar in construction to Nexon, well good luck Tata. Tata has a great R&D team, but the QC team is nowhere nearby.

Hope they don't mess up Altroz Turbo.

You are a TML (TATA Motors Loyalist) Have been reading your posts on the forum and everyone would agree that you have been a fervor fan of Tata and why not? They have been improving their products at an incremental pace.
Similar to you, I have a zealot for VW cars. However as a package, Altroz trumps Polo HL+ TSI MT. There is a news of an Altroz DCT to be launched as well which shall embarrass VW for discontinuing their DSG. Good times ahead for petrolheads and nationalist to not be caught in a catch 22 situation anymore

So there are other Ford owners with same predicament!
I drive a Fiesta 1.5 TDCi, got her remapped as that chassis and steering begged for more power. She is a 2015 model, so 5 years old and going strong. With how my experience has been so far, I think I can keep her for another 5 years or 7, will do whatever it takes to maintain her.
If only we had the Fiesta hatch or Focus hatch in India, I won't be so desperate to keep and maintain her for so long. When Tiago JTP came, I was like, may be, as I don't really need the size of the Fiesta, just need how it makes me feel, I can replace her with a JTP some day, but then it lived so short. Now that the Altroz turbo is coming up, I will be keeping a keen eye on this one. I just wish we had real hot hatches in India, and can't understand with all the millennials making money now, why isn't there a market for them already. I would pay Creta money to buy a Fiesta ST or Compass money to buy a Focus ST, see how genuine I am being and not even asking for the RS.
And you hit the bulls eye, a used 3 series can only replace a true Ford, nothing less would suffice.

Could you post some of the imperfection pics on the relevant threads? I'm curious about this.

Even my Nano has no spots where you can get a cut.
Also, if Tata is launching a turbo petrol, the USP should be mileage. The Tiago turbo did not do well in that regard. An average sub-10 lakh buyer will care a lot about mileage.

You need to drive with a really light foot to extract good fuel economy from a small turbo petrol.

On my car at least (JTP), I can easily average anywhere from as low as 8kmpl, to a decent 12kmpl, and anywhere in between.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

Hi. I am sorry if I sound stupid. Reading through the thread it can be implied that Altroz's gearbox cannot handle beyond 140 Nm torque. How does it handle 200 Nm torque in the diesel avatar? Can someone throw some light on how the equations differ?

Altroz Diesel uses TA 5260 gearbox whereas Altroz Petrol uses TA 65* and both variants of Nexon houses TA 6300 gearbox.

You can get owner's manual for any Tata car here:- https://cars.tatamotors.com/service/.../owners-manual

Following is a screenshot from Altroz owner's manual.

Haven't heard of this gear box before, can anyone turn on the torch? Any technical specifications?
And if I purchase a petrol model and upstage the ECU mapping (say torque more than 200nm) , how the gearbox will be effected? Please
