Indeed a great news, but the rumoured price tag of Rs 60L is such a big deterrent. It will be dead on arrival.

Toyota always mess up with the pricing in India. This car should be priced in the Honda CRV/ Compass Trail Hawk range. 28-35L on road should be good. But am sure this car wont get enough sales here in India. People spending over 30L will directly consider the Endeavour or the Fortuner.
But still I will say, its a good move by Toyota rather than badging Maruti’s!

Toyota, do surprise us by pricing it in the range of Rs 25L on road, I bet you will be surprised by the market response! RAV4 is indeed an awesome product.

You still hold a very good market value in India, please do not kill it by absurd pricing! I am one of the person who still swear by the name Toyota!

Spotted a RAV4 a couple of weeks back on NH2 near Burdwan. It was on the way to Bhutan.

Isn't RAV4 in the same segment as a CRV in other markets? Pricing it at 60+ lakhs would be pure arrogance. Or they may be targeting 40+L range and Autocar must have been hired to make it look like a steal if and when launched.

60 lakhs is wishful thinking. You can get a volvo xc40 or BMW x1 for 40 .
I don't know what Toyota has in their mind.

During my stay abroad I had extensively driven the RAV4 and honestly there was nothing special about it. Its a soccer mom car abroad and thats about it. I found the power and handling to be just adequate and nothing to write home about.

Interesting ! Checked few Toyota cars pricing in Bhutan and the pricing for few after the full tax are as follows ,

Liva VXD - 10 Lakhs
Prius C Hybrid -23 Lakhs
Rush -26 Lakhs
Innova Crysta -27 Lakhs
CH R-34 Lakhs
Rav4 Hybrid - 40 Lakhs
Fortuner- 47 Lakhs
Prado -88 Lakhs

How about import taxes in Bhutan ? Can we bring cars from Bhutan as used ?

No way it can sell at 60 lakhs, partial blame to our government policies as well. The maximum they can try to do is match the price of Kodiaq / CRV and not more than that, DOT. Attaching the GCC price and approximately converted rate.

Toyota doesn't even price its locally made cars well, while its CBUs are obscene (think Landcruiser at 1.7 crores OTR). They shouldn't bother with the RAV4 because:

- It is a decent crossover, but not a great one.

- They will overprice it = destined to fail on launch day itself.

- Such moves dent the company's reputation & make it the joke of the industry.

Why waste time? The Lexus NX 300h is for 69 lakhs (before discounts :D).

OMG! How absurd is that 60 L pricing rumour on RAV4 when Lexus NX300h with EV mode sells at 69L ?!
My bet is 45L introductory , they might be overconfident on the 70 units p.m. sales of overpriced Vellfire, But RAV4 is priced at half of that of Vellfire in many markets .

I had asked Renuka Kirpalani editor Autocar on Instagram about the pricing of the RAV4 at ₹60L ex-showroom and she said it’s just a rumour and it can’t be confirmed right now, so I won’t be suprised if Toyota India competently price it say between the Fortuner and Camry(I really wish they do!)

As @octane_100 mentioned, it could be Toyota’s game to see how the masses react to the absurd price, but Toyota will definitely overprice it; not 60L but maybe 40L ex-showroom.

Also seeing Toyota‘s behaviour in India, clearly they believe that the RAV4 will eat into the Fortuner’s sales hence the absurd pricing. Honestly the RAV4 is much more competent product as compared to the Fortuner leaving aside the butch macho looks, ground clearance and 3rd row availability of the Fortuner. RAV4 has better comfort, a nice hybrid engine which will be the future for Toyota, a sunroof(many turn away from the fortuner for the lack of a sunroof), more features, AWD system that many mid-size SUVs lack(except the Jeep Compass and Tucson) and is the perfectly sized for the Indian market.

All of Toyota 's cars in India are overpriced. It will not be a suprise if they price it at 60 lacs. It's not even a desirable car say eg the Mustang. It's a me too product from Toyota who think they can charge Mercedes money for a mundane car.

For the life of me cant figure out why toyota overprices their cars so much in India.

Yes, i get it that there is some premium for good aftersales but looking at RAV4 rumoured pricing they want it to fail.

Or is it some corporate writeoff scheme that they are working with to show losses and escape taxes.

Well Toyota already is a joke of the century, as they started selling sub par Maruti cars with just a logo change. Maruti cars never match Toyota quality.

I fail to understand, why do these companies make such mistakes. I know a few ardent RAV4 but even they don't seem to be happy about the CBU route. Makes a lot of sense to sell more at a bit lower cost.

The RAV4 is arguably a better product since its sold in the US and Europe while the Fortuner isn't. But its true that its supposed to be priced similar to the Camry like in the UAE as well but Camry is a CKD in India while the Rav4 will be a CBU!

And unfortunately for Toyota, the equivalent Lexus is CKD (I believe), so both will up costing the same. Or Toyota will have to absorb costs and price it cheaper like VW-Skoda did with the T-Roc/Karoq.

Why should they absorb the costs? If it was their flagship product only launched to project their premium image then it would make sense. RAV4 is a mid size SUV (by global standards) so in my opinion, the best way Toyota could have handled this is by killing the Fortuner and replacing it with the Rav 4 and provide Hybrid and AWD options in the higher variants. As taxes on diesel SUVs are more or less comparable with tax on hybrids, it would have worked out if they could localize the manufacturing.

Toyota is the only manufacturer in India who has a track record of killing their flagship car and successfully replacing it with another flagship which went on to be an even bigger success. It's a shame that they are not serious this time and are trying to fool the customers. :deadhorse
